Yes, another newbie. And I've got a potentially serious problem.

I just recently got into cigars, and decided to set up a cheapie humidor belonging to a friend of mine that had gone unused for quite a long time.

It seems to hold moisture well, but I think the cedar it is made from is far too aromatic. The few cigars I've had in there about a week smoke well, but don't taste right at all now.

So I've got a real humidor on order now, along with about 60 cigars. If I put the cigars I have now in with those, will they recover? Or will they spoil all my new ones as well?

First: When you put moisture in a humidor that has been dry for a while, some of the oils in the cedar seem to get reconstituted. After some time at 70% with cigars in it, the aroma may fade. Put some dog rockets in there and let them set awhile. Second: Put those other smokes in your new humi. It may take awhile for the taste to fade, but they won't spoil your other smokes. That's my opinion!

I would also recommend putting cedar inserts in your new humidor. You can get these from many empty cigar boxes. You local tobacconist should have more than enough. This will both absorb some of the aroma, as well as add the natural Spanish cedar aroma that is desired by most.

I did this with my Otter box after carrying some flavoreds in it for a little while. (They were for the ladies!) The smell went away in about a day.

The new one is already lined with spanish cedar. Are inserts still a good idea?

They're spoiled. Package thenm up, and ship them to me. I will send you a pack.... no make it two packs (I'm feeling generous) of self sticky stamps along with a couple of mint condition PEZ dispensers from my personal collection.
I only hope I have reached you before any more damage has been done.

The cedar will absorb some of the aroma in your humidor, while adding the "natural" or "desired" spanish cedar aroma. Therefore, if you place additional strips of cedar in your humidor, they will absorb some of the unwanted aroma. Later on, after the unwanted aroma is minimized, or gone, you can remove these strips, as they have done their job.

You can also do this as a quick fix when your humidor has too much moisture.

OK, so one more question.

My new cigars are slowly arriving, and I don't want to put them in this old humidor. The new one doesn't get here until Tuesday. Will these be OK sealed in their little baggies and boxes in my closet until I can get the new one seasoned?

I really appreciate the help, guys.

Yes the new smokes will be OK in baggies for a while also you might want to slip those new boxes in to gallon ziplocks as well.Myself,I don't think I'd put any questionable cigars in my New Humi with my new cigars.I'd get a 1 or 2 rectangular rubbermaid container from wally world for those, you only need the smallest of humidifiers in the rubbermaid though and just smokem as need be. There's only four cigars left of the batch I put in the old humidor. But two of them are Partagas black labels and the other two are La Glora Cubana Series R #6 maduros. Too good to let to go waste, but there's really no point in smoking them in their current condition. :/
