yea... that damn OBAMA

their three parties tend to be for statehood, status quo (territory) and independent.

the red or blue thing doesn't apply as cleanly there

more than ours at least. they really are not R and D there.

Their politics are more fun.... you'll be in a small town when a truck comes through cranking music (or sometimes a band) then the booze flows and there is a party. I think last man standing wins.

I wonder how the average Jose would be affected tax wise... I assume they're already recieving USA bucks... what happens when they have to start paying state & fed taxes.... Think

My wife and I have talked about this quite a bit.... enough that I know not to bring it up anymore.

My take (she doesn't agree with most of it)

Independent - Backwards step to thirld world country. The youngsters drinking and ruminating about gringos love this one.
State - good and bad here. Representation Probably more taxes (at least fed...they already have their local taxes), maybe more money back as well (from the fed) I really don't see much upside here
Status Quo - No real representation, but to me it seems like a one way money stream (towards them) and although not represented directly they still have influence. My take on this annoys my wife.

I'm not that deep into their politics and am prolly wrong. this is my shoot from the hip. If I lived there I'd look at it more closely of course.

Truth be said they are prolly status quo for a long while and like most places the real political battles are local.

We just sold property there a few years back.... talk about a nightmare....

it can't be done, it can't be done, it can't be done, it's done. Thats how conducting business there is. We spent two weeks haggling with lawyers and the crim (sp?...the govt).

We went through it again last yeardividing some property to sell one of the houses to the renter... OMG

even getting grandma into a home was hard work.

My FIL (the other grandma's son) spent 3 days trying to cancel his mom's tellephone and utility accounts when she had to move into a home. She has alzheimer's and couldn't do it herself. He finally told them if they couldn't cancel it just try to find her and collect....

it's really ass backwards there

As for nursing facilities.... there really are none in the sense we have here. There are ZERO medicare certified homes. They don't need to be because they have the people at their mercy. They are not certified or inspected and are horrific for the most part. People are trapped and have to private pay.... there are few choices. Really scary. We have it good here.

Their economy seems to be alot more volitile than ours too. I love the island but if my last couple trips there would have been my first I would not return.

They will bounce back though.

Yes.

Lack of oversite of the nursing facilities on the island made me appreciate our system here no matter how faulty ours is.

Oh they have plenty of govt jobs now.... what a mess

My wife and I are talking about starting a business there...... one that will likely break even at best, but will likely be a slow bleeder (loss). If we can figure out how to keep it from being a fast bleeder we will likely go for it at some point. It will benefit the a small area of people on the island but it would be a start.

I would tend to say blue. Agree with TW regarding Government mess. I've dealt with several agencies (USDA, DOJ, etc.) and they tend to make things more difficult that they ought to be. Brick wall

Btw, Puerto Ricans are NOT a race- warm, affectionate, yet volatile people but not a race. There tends to be a mixture of Arawak Indian, white, & black but skins tones range from fair blond to coal black. I lived there for a few years & still have family there. Should post family pics but too lazy for the usual "look at me".

Those are US agencies..... they are a peice of cake. It's the local government that is AWFUL...... everything is on paper somewhere but not able to be found (until they just show up). It is the whole reason their birth certificates are null and void (and were used for illegal immigration). What a mess. Tru dealing with the CRIM or
Departamento de Hacienda

did someone call the PRs a race?

I've heard it often & some call them "brown" (perhaps after tanning at Luquillo all day). Redneck & uninformed IMHO.

If you think US agencies are a piece of cake by comparison I'd HATE to deal with the local governments. LOL

My wife calls herself brown and me a whitey or gringo. do I need to tell her she is wrong and is really uninformed about puerto rico andshe is a red neck (she did take me to see molly hatchet, the outlaws, nazerath and skynard)? I don't want to because she has a knife and stuff.

True story ..... when I met her she didn't have much money and was raising two kids. She had one cheap (kmart brand) chefs knife that she used for everything. Cutting meat, opening cans, as a screw driver, cutting small limbs (trees not the kids, defrosting the freezer, etc)...... we still have the knife....

she thought she could use my good knives like that.... we had a tussle... afterwards I admitted she could do what she wants and I'm frightened of her but requested that she not do so as her decision not because I requested it.

Hey, some PR's ARE "brown" (racial mixture as stated above). What do want from me??? Call my lawyer. I'm just saying they don't all fit into that stereotype.

...and great knife story! LOL! I think that's a woman thing. Wife and mom find more uses for knives than that pocket fisherman with the built- in cork screw.

Really? never knew that. I thought the chineese resteraunte off the main square in Cabo Rojo that served nearly traditional chineese fare with a side of rice and beans was owned by russians.

My favorite spanish deli is owned by eskimos

On of he funniest things I can remember as a child (besides your momma) was making the family trek to an "authentic" Spanish restaurant in NY that specialized in paellas (La Bilbaina?). I heard the kitchen staff get into a heated argument & when the kitchen doors swung open saw a roomful of asians screaming in perfect spanish. LOL Turns out they were Cuban-Chinese emigres.

I'll miss them after you get committed too. But after several years of therapy they will let you out and you'll finally get to mail the letters. I look forward to the day of getting hundreds of your letters delivered at once.

True story I think I told in here before.

In college I had to move back into the dorms for a semester and got randomly assigned a roommate. I called him doral dave because he smoked 4+ packs of cigarettes (Dorals) a day (never had to light a match.... he chained them). he drove a $500 car because he would just junk it for another when the windsheild got to cloudy from smoke residue but I digress.

Dave's legs didn't work well and he had a scooter. He was a vietnam vet taking 2 or 3 hours. He did get shot, but not in the war but that wan't the reason he couldn't walk. He got cancer and it crushed something in his spine.

His ex wife (not an ex at the time) shot him. When I asked why he said he didn't know but when he walked out of his girlfriends house there she was with a shot gun. She apparantly didn't know how to release the safety so it took a few attempts. She was in prision at the time for attempted murder. She had a restraining order against him however because her therapist thought he had a bad effect on her recovery LOL.

I **** you not. He wrote multiple letters to her every day, put them in seperate envelopes, addressed them, stamped them then put them in a shoe box. He was just starting his third shoebox when I bailed.

I got really drunk on mescal with a buddy one night and we came very close to dumping them all into the public mailbox. I really don't know what stopped us.

Ahhh good times.

When I'm voluntarily committed, I'll send you slightly used, signed bragetas stuffed with Perdomos & Ghurkas. You can set up a Pass it Forward like they did with the autographed five dollar bill or the Iraqui note. Great fun & photo op hijinks will ensue, I promise you!!
