I inquired at my local shop about getting the box when I bought the last 2 cigars in it. I was told that they keep them and Fuente sends them bundles to refill them! I'm all for recycling, but shouldn't we get a break on the price if they don't have to pay for a mahogany box?

Don't believe a word they tell you. Especially since the Opus X is usually only released once a year. I'd guarantee he sells those boxes. I've seen them on auction sites for ridiculous amounts. Tell that SOB how greedy he is and stratagically place a beatle infested dog rocket at the bottom of one of his precious Opus X boxes. Carving a pentagram into the bottom of the box is also a viable alternative.

he should have told you he sells them.

if he lies about something like this, i would not trust him about anything.

face to face telling him, isn't worth the stress. go to another store that will lie to you.

I agree with Rickamaven. The dude is selling those boxes, and I believe that AF does not distribute the Opus X in bundles, though I could be wrong...I doubt it.
Find another place to buy Opus X's.

Everybody that has posted is telling the truth. Tell your local dealer to take a flying leap! If he lies to you about an empty box, what is he telling you about cigars when you ask for his/her opinion?

I did notice a large stack of empty Opus boxes behind the counter. Maybe she sells them back to Fuente? She wouldn't let go, even for cash.

Just checked Ebay. You can bid on boxes over there for anywhere from $10- $25.00. That might tell you what your dealer is doing with them.

It all sounds fishy. I've had a great relationship with them for years. I used to take them some of my empty boxes because they used to donate them to the Texas Childrens hospital. The kids loved to put their stuff in them. It's not politicaly correct anymore since they're remnants of "tobacco products".
It's not like her to tell me a story, but you never know.

Barry, I went to local cigar shop today and picked up some opus x too. When asked if he had any other sizes, he said he had 4 more boxes of various sizes but said they would not sell by the box! He would not even open another box until that one was empty.. touchy..touchy

I talked to the Fuentes. They do not sell Opus X bundles, ever. Dealers get Opus X whenever Fuente decides to ship it to them, cigar dealers do not get to order Opus X. Furthermore, to be considered a dealer for an Opus X program, one has to promise to only sell the Opus X cigars in limited quantities, hence the reason why you cannot buy a box. However, sometimes you can find dealers who will sell you a box anyway.

Maybe its true.

I inquired about the Box and was told the same thing. They get new sticks in bundles and reload the box.

If I recall, the initial release of the Opus was delayed because of the shortage of boxes, not cigars.
Maybe they are still having box shortage issues.

Fuente obviously would not admit to selling/shipping Opus X by the bundle. It would cheapen the brand, and consumers would expect/demand a lower price.

Maybe then, you could get it for a more reasonable price, making the cigar worth the purchase :)

A few years ago, authorized retailers were getting OpusX sent to them in a generic box to be placed in the empty orignal boxes due to a box shortage. This should not be considered "bundles". For the last two years, Fuente has always shipped in original OpusX boxes. I know an authorized retailer in Texas (good friend) who never knows when he will receive OpusX or how many he will receive. Generally, he does get a supply this time of year, in fact received 6 boxes last week. They went quickly.

I do remember a while back that Opus were being shipped to retailers in non-descript (plain) boxes due to the shortage of Opus boxes.

Whether they were bundled or not I'm not sure. Regardless, I don't think that they were ever sold as a whole "bundle".

... I think they were 40-50 ct. cardboard "refill" boxes, and the retailer wold get whaterver the Fuentes want to send them. Retailers cannot order Opus X, they get what ever is shipped to them ... when available.

I live in Nashville, and we get three to four shippments of Opus X each year. I have never had a problem(for the past four years) purchasing an empty box of two each shippment. They cost me $5 each and I auction them when I collect about ten or so. Someone is getting handed a pile of s*!t.
