Help! I made a homemade coolerdor following the instructions I've seen on here: approx. 3x5 tupperware container with holes drilled in it, oasis cut slightly smaller than tupperware container, 50/50 solution on oasis -wet but not soaked, strips of spanish cedar, etc. I calibrated my digital hygrometer using the wet salt in the bottle cap in the baggie for 6 hours method and it was right on at 75%rh(wow) Now when I put it in the coolerdor I'm getting like 77-78%rh readings after checking it after a few hours!! I thought the purpose of the 50/50 pg solution was that it maintained a 70% rh?? Why the heck is the reading getting so high? Did I forget something? Just for the record, I also put in some empty cigar boxs(yes, spanish cedar) to help suck up some of the moisture. Any help would be appreciated. Don't want mold, bugs, whatever screwing up my wonderful gars!!

i assume you are talking about a cooler chest , like an igloo or whatever the brand names are.

open the box for a few hours and let it settle in. close it without the humidifier. wrap the humidifier in saran wrap to keep it sealed until you are ready to use it again.

if your guage was on the money the first time you calibrated it, put it on the kitchen table and see if it changes. if it does, recalibrate it. i don't remember hearing about a hygromter ever being right on the money. is it digital or the wire gizmo? how big is the chest and how many cigars are in it.

don't panic. your cigars aren't going to be hurt that fast. if they are damp, just leave the cover off the chest for a while and let them dry out. the oils will still be there and it is easier to correct a wet cigar than a dry one and don't take my usual bs about the micro seriously.

keep us all informed.

Yep. What Rick says. I've had one coolerdor for two years now. No mold, no problems.

Thanks for the suggestions! RICKAMAVEN Ok, it's a 48qt igloo brand cooler. The hygrometer is a digital one. The spec's from the paperwork that came with it said +/- 1.9% accuracy for Rh. & +/- 1.3% for temp. I took it out and let it sit for 3 hours outside the coolerdor and it read 62%rh afterwards. Put it back in the bag w/salt setup for 6 hours again and it read 75%rh after the 6 hrs. Right now I have 3 boxs(full) and a box with about 15 assorted "napping" cigars. The hygrometer has been back in the 'dor for only a 1/2hour, so I will wait a few hours before checking it. Thanks again for the help Rick and Mr Mean!!

Hey joe,

i made my first coolerdor a few months back and i had the same prob. I thought that i had too much water and PG in the foam so i let them (3) air out to get them more dry, then placed them back in and still the same thing. What i did to fix the problem was take 2 out and only have one, that did the trick. OH by the way I am useing the soapdish not a tup. container.

Good luck,

Dan

your temp may be higher than the 70 degrees where PG stabilizes at 70%, so the PG will stabalize a little higher than 70. its just a matter of "vapor pressure" (the physics of evaporation), anyways, just resrict the airflow on your tupperware humidifier a little and less moisture will escape.
