The Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people and wounding 32 others during a shooting at Fort Hood has reportedly been paid more than $278,000 since the 2009 incident.

U.S. Department of Defense officials confirmed that Maj. Nidal Hasan’s salary cannot be suspended unless he is proven guilty in the Nov. 5, 2009, shooting in Texas, citing the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Jury selection in his trial is scheduled to begin May 30.

If Hasan, 42, had been a civilian Defense Department employee, Army officials could have suspended his pay after just seven days.

The White House and Pentagon have refused to characterize Hasan's attack as terrorism, instead terming it “workplace violence.” The victims have been denied Purple Hearts and are suing the military because they claim the "workplace violence" designation gives them diminished access to medical care and financial benefits normally available to those whose wounds are designated as "combat related."

Why wouldn't he be?

Now you're beginning to sound like my wife.
If we hit the lottery, her first comment would be, Great, now how much more are we going to have to pay in taxes? lol

Why can't we get a Federal law that demands victim compensation from criminals AND their families??
Nidal Hassan's estate, wife, and kids should be saddled with compensating the victims' families for what he did.

Probably, but since this case has taken a little less than 4 years to get this far, and the required automatic appeals that begin if they do give him the death penalty, a lot of us will be retired or dead before that ever happens. If memory serves, no one has been executed (military) since 1961 so what difference does the sentence make, really.

Tim,

He wants the death penalty. He might not put up any appellate defense. Given it is the federal death penalty, it only goes to one appellate court before SCOTUS. It may even go straight to SCOTUS. Military death sentence might not even fall within the federal circuit appellate system. This could go faster than one might think- or not. I say torture him until he gives it up. Let's be optomistic until we see otherwise!

Eh, let him keep drawing a salary, so that the families of the victims can file civil suit against him and take it.

PS- I am not a lawyer and have no idea if it actually works that way.

It could, if he was paid by check or cash equivalent and didn't squander it. Besides, it isn't enough for ant wrongful death claim. You would think the military would take care of these families and presume 20 years of service so that there is also a pension benefit for them.

Robert, I am around, just very little on possible political threads.

I miss a lot of the FOG's who were here when we started; times do change.

Working on getting back to Florida I hope in the near future.

Maj. Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist who killed 13 people in 2009 in a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, was sentenced to death Wednesday by a military jury after just two hours of deliberation.

Hasan, who offered little defense, sat motionless as the jury president read the verdict. Hasan has said he acted to protect Islamic insurgents abroad from American aggression and never denied being the gunman. In opening statements, he acknowledged to the jury that he pulled the trigger in a crowded waiting room where troops were getting final medical checkups before deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hasan had one final chance Wednesday to give a closing argument before his case went to the jury, but he declined -- continuing an absent defense that he has used since his trial began three weeks ago.

The Army psychiatrist's behavior has only stoked suspicion that his ultimate goal is martyrdom, in the form of a death sentence that would allow him to fulfill what prosecutors have described as a "jihad duty" under his Islamic faith.

The lead prosecutor, Col. Mike Mulligan, told jurors Wednesday morning that history was full of instances of death in the name of religion. But he said it would be "wrong and unsupportive" to tie Hasan's actions to a wider cause

"You cannot offer what you don't own; you cannot give away what is not yours. He can never be a martyr because he has nothing to give…..Do not be misled; do not be confused; do not be fooled. He is not giving his life. We are taking his life. This is not his gift to God, it's his debt to society. He will not now and will not ever be a martyr. He is a criminal, a cold-blooded murderer. On 5 November he did not leave this earth, he remained to pay a price. To pay a debt. The debt he owes is his life," Mulligan said

Hope they keep him alive to break rocks the rest of his life while they split up his pay among the victims' families.
If not, then the rope for which he should be grateful because it's a heckuva lot quicker and merciful than his beloved sharia.
