As the Dante crew will confirm, I used to smoke the most full body cigars I could find. I was the guy who would speed smoke a Cain F and an Antano dark in an hour and a half, with nothing but a glass of water. Never even got a buzz.

Now a days, full body smokes kick my freak'n arse. I just finished an Antano dark. This was right after a full meal, and it was kicking my butt half way through, even with a beer. I had to go and get a snack to eat along side of it, just to be able to finish the smoke. Even with the food and beer, it took me almost 2 full hours to finish, and I'm really feeling the buzz. I'm finding that I'm now having this problem with anything the full side of medium. Sheesh.

Old age is a bitch. fog Actually, I'm wondering if this has anything to do with all the food allergies I've developed over the past couple years. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to continue to load up on Fuentes and such.

This happens to me every once in a while. I think it's just the mood you're in or how you are feeling at the time. Sometimes I will smoke 2 or 3 of the same cigar back to back and not feel a thing and other times, I won't be able to finish one of that exact same cigar without getting a big buzz or the sweats.

I wish that was all it was Pro, but it's now happening each and every time. The Long Star by Kinky used to be my favorite super cheapie (I got tons of them for a buck each here). I would smoke them like candy and never felt anything from them. About 8 months ago, one kicked me so bad, I had to put it down half way through, and it's only a 4-1/2" x 52 cigar. I can't get more then half way through any of them, any more. Then I started to notice it with other favorites of mine like Cains, MB3s, Dark Antanios, T-52s, etc. Now every single cigar on the full side does it to me. Oh, well, at least I'm appreciating the complexities and nuances in medium to medium light cigars far more then I ever did before.

Heading back out to watch the Phillies game I have recording (baseball is more enjoyable when you can fast forward between pitches and over the commercials, lol). I'm grabbing an 8-5-8. At least this old fart can still handle those.

David the full bodied cigars don't kick my arse, the ligero kills my taste buds and I honestly just don't enjoy them anymore. The Dark Corojo is a great example. I used to like those more than a LP9 and the $ was just a bonus.

Now I don't like "airballs" but Fuente, LFD, Illusione and some Tats are my NCs of choice.

You tried a Fuente R44?

I think our tastes in cigars is pretty close, Jamie. When I first starting smoking, Fuentes where "tasteless" to me, but I'm really starting to enjoy them. I never had an R44, but I'm slowly exploring more and more of their stuff.

Life could be worse than restricting yourself to AF 8-5-8's. Picked up a couple the other day at Total Wine. Was so good I smoked the second one the same afternoon after disc golf. Gots to find a box on the cheap.{:-)

BTW, when was the last time you checked your BP? Nicotinic effects on the nervous and vascular systems can unmask issues with fluctuating BP.fog

Interesting on the BP, Jamie. My Dad has high blood pressure, but mine has always tested very good. I may have to look into that.

I've had three 8-5-8 naturals so far, and am enjoying each one a little more then the previous. The one last night was excellent, plus construction has been spot on, and the burn, razor sharp. Now to get ahold of some maddies, candela, and sungrowns.

BTW, folks, after lunch today, I had a '07 Morado. Started felling ill and light headed half way through and had to grab a snack on a full stomach. That's the first time for that cigar, and I've smoked through at least 3 boxes. I sure don't understand what the heck is going on.

Nope, I don't retro-hale, and have never been a spitter. Maybe I'm turning into a Nancy boy (like Lancaster).

I get nothing out of mild cigars. I've only been smoking for two years now, and you are a couple decades older than me, but I still like strong smokes. Maybe when I come close to your age my taste will have changed.

Tonight I smoked an EPC Elenco Acto Mayor (torp), followed immediately by a Genesis Toro. The first is suppose to be full, and the second medium/full, yet I had no problem with either one. Go figure. I have no idea what the heck my problem is.

I'm having the opposite effect...can't seem to get a decent buzz. I enjoy the lightheaded, tingly "electrified" sensation that strong cigars used to provide, but infrequently get anymore. Are you getting a stronger reaction, one I've only felt a few times, where I got nauseated, dizzy and slightly feverish?

Ever since I started retrohaling cigars I couldn't imagine not retrohaling... makes such a huge difference to me in how I pick up flavors, but to each his own...

Dave, what food allergies have you developed? Are any of them to the major 5, i.e. shellfish, dairy, peanuts, soy or whatever the fifth one is? Are they life threatening or just irritating? Curious because I had a bunch develop at about age 6 or so... not life-threatening, just day-ruining...

Joel,
My allergies are Cerebral. Sometimes I get a little tightness in the throat, but not always. The main effects are panic attacks, agitation, a feeling of hopelessness and/or deep depression. Gluten and soy are the big ones. The tiniest amount, even something processed on the same machinery, or in the same plant with wheat or soy can set it off. Walking near the bakery department of a grocery store while they're making or baking bread can also do it. To a lesser degree (I can tolerant small amounts), I have problems with other legumes (peanuts, chickpeas), some tree nuts, and caffeine.

I used to think I had a problem with seafood, even canned tuna, but the new Federal allergy labeling laws are shedding some light on that. I'm finding that a lot of shellfish is processed in plants that also process wheat and soy. Many tuna cans now say CONTAINS SOY, even though the ingredient list only lists tuna and water. Some of Trader Joe's tuna is soy free, and I don't seem to have any problems with it. I haven't revisited shellfish since the new labeling, so I don't know it that is still a problem.

Eating out is next to impossible. Most places that claim "gluten free" meals don't have a clue. They just think it's the current fad, and don't understand that for someone with gluten intolerance, or even some Celiacs, they can't be preparing their gluten free meals on the same counters, and with the same equipment that they make their other stuff with. Recently, I was at a wedding reception, and the waiter told me that they could make their Chicken Marsala gluten free. I asked him if they used flour to thicken the sauce. "Uh, yes, but it wasn't breaded so that made it gluten free." I told him that their "gluten free" meal would harm me, and could send some Celiacs to the hospital. He and the cooks had no clue.

That's a rough set of allergens to have... Soy is filthy... you shouldn't be consuming it anyways... when I first got into the food industry I worked a micro lab for a beef slaughterhouse... we tested all the meat for those frozen mexican food products (which incidentally all come from pretty much the same factory)... they would buy beef tainted with e.coli and mix it with up to 60% soy... every coliform count we did on the meat would come back fairly normal... once the soy was mixed in the counts would come back "too numerous to count" every single time...

I feel for ya Dave... I attempted a gluten free diet for about a day once and hated it... my uncle has been doing it for years but he pretty much eats nothing but ribs and steak for every meal...

Believe me, dude, you're preaching to the choir about soy. When I did Atkins back in '03, most low carb foods where soy based. I also used to do a lot with soy protein powder, as I believed the bogus health claims.

Soy was the first allergy I developed, followed one by one by the others. The research I've done, tends to show that regular use of soy, many times creates a soy allergy, which then cascades into other food allergies. Personally, I blame soy for all my food allergies. Even if they are not allergic, if folks knew the toxins in soy, and what it does to your estrogen levels, they wouldn't touch the stuff. I can't believe this poison is still allowed to be sold for human consumption.

Just a thought. You might want to check and see if your ears need to be cleaned out. I was experiencing similar problems of smoke one of my favorites and almost immediately start feeling light-headed, dizzy, almost nauseous. Happened to have a doctor visit and he told me my ears were full of wax and should be cleaned out. Got an ear wax removal kit at Walgreens and after getting them flushed I am back to enjoying my cigars. Might be totally unrelated to your issue but thought I would mention it. Hate to see anybody not able to enjoy their cigars. Good luck.

My allergies have caused inner ear infections, resulting in the inner ear canal being plugged. Tried clearing it with anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, but eventually had to have it drained with an out-patient surgical procedure and a drainage tube inserted.

Worth looking into dpnewell, given your history of allergies.

Very sorry to hear about your smoking discomfort, brother dpne. I was going to quip that it was probably due to queer genes but kidding aside because in all likelihood that's not true, that's a bummer, my friend.

Haven't read most of the thread (sorry but that's partly due to my mild ocd) so I may be repeating someone's insight(s) but have you ever wondered if it IS an allergy- possibly to an insecticide or perhaps a nutritional supplement (ie, cow shiite)? The fact that you didn't always react the same way may be due to changes & amount of application.

Don't know but if it continues to worsen, you may have a genetic predisposition to cancer & will have to proactively remove your genitalia for preventative measures of course.

Good luck!

My favs are now medium DR smokes, almost anything Fuente and LA Preferidos.
1/2 of my Vinotemp still has strong smokes, which I plan to whittle down
