Depends on my mood but I don’t go gordo. Just never had one I like. Even tried the new plasencia in Solomon that everyone but me loves. Meh. Maybe I don’t know how to correctly smoke the larger smokes. But from lancero to even Churchill I’ll get down. Just the 56-60 plus ring smokes are just too extra for me. Even if they are torpedo or perfecto shaped. Just not really my thing

I did like the Camacho 3x Maduro better in a 60 than I did a 50. Could've been other factors such as age, but seemed smoother and more balanced overall. Still don't generally Iike gordos though.

Now my last reason against large RG's.....You look like a polesmoker puffing on these things.

NOTHING phallic about wrapping your lips on those thick shafts and sucking! Not phallic at all. Nothing to see here.

98.2% of the time, when trying out a new blend or line I'll grab a Robusto. If it holds my interest I'll buy 4 or 5 more. If it still does then I move onto perhaps a Corona, Double Corona or Toro.

YMMV.

I usually grab a five pack of robustos when trying new blends. This method lets me "test and rest" I'm usually too impatient to let cigars sit before trying them out so this way I can have one right away and let the others rest for a while then repeat the cycle a few more times. By then I know if I'm going to want more.

I do like 48-60rg depending on the smoke. I've always ended up hot boxing smaller rg and burning funky and tasting bitter and too hot. After reading this thread I guess I'll give it another whirl and just puff enough to keep it lit. Also someone mentioned here that small rg might smoke a little better a little dryer. I think that may have been part of my problem because I remember always sucking on them so hard because I wasn't getting the smoke I wanted.

Fat rg pro tip: If you get box pressed smokes even at 60rg you don't have to open your mouth so wide and they feel just right. Herfing

Coronas and half coronas are my favorite.

50rg is a hard limit for me. I'll bring robs and sometimes a Churchill with me when I go camping. But most of the time it's a corona derivative.

As a general rule, I prefer something near a 50 ring. Some bigger rings are good on some cigars and so are some thinner rings.

I used to think 54rg was perfect, but now I rarely exceed 52, and seek out 42-52 as the sweet spot. 38rg is fine by me, but these are generally lanceros, and aint no body got time for dat! OK, I don't have time for that.. Some of you layabouts may, though.

I do have an 80rg ?Parmetto? (I am at the office right now and don't recall the precise name) cigar Leebot sent me that I have just been too afraid to smoke, though... I am concerned about getting lockjaw.

Was it one of those n00bie gag gifts where you send a Drew Estates Egg or that one cigar (I can't remember the name of it right now) that resembled Earl Campbell's left leg?

haha, no. I used the search feature and found my original post...

It's an LCA La Parmedo. Advertised as 60rg but 'hell no' it's more like 80.

^ That's crazy!

Stogie, sorry, no pressure to smoke that. It's a good cigar, but mine seemed to mellow rather quickly, or maybe it was just what I ate. I seem to remember you smoking things a little larger back then.

If you get the chance to re-gift it to someone who likes bigger cigars, I won't be offended. (Although, being offended and aggrieved is such a cool thing for everyone nowadays, maybe I'll try to get butthurt about it if I can.)

I think you're right. Those are bigger than 60rg.

I think, subconsciously, I’ve done this as a good amount of my cigars are close to this RG. If I see something new that I want to try, I always look for vitolas in the <50 range. If none available then I’ll look at 50 but not more than 52.

I do the same. It's gotta be something I REALLY want to try for me to go over 50rg these days.

The exceptions for me with this is Southern Draw Jacobs Ladder Brimstone, Nub Double Maduro, AFR-75 Edicion Limitada Maduro, Saint Luis Rey Serie G Maduro

I made an exception last year when I bought a few Padron 40ths, 45ths and 50ths for upcoming special occasions. Given their limited availability and virtually no discounting by any of the online vendors, I bought whatever I could find, whenever they were in stock. Iirc, the largest RG is 54 but it’s the occasion and the people I’ll be smoking with that counts.

@clint I’ve had the jacobs ladder in lancero and toro and thought the toro was wicked good. Like by a long stretch compared to the lance.
