Due to the down economy, my wife and I are two of the 30 million uninsured, that the ACA is suppose to help. Well, I just ran the numbers.

Quote:
014 annual household income: 161% of poverty level
Number of tobacco users in your household: 1
Your estimated 2014 total premium costs before the tax credit: $15,089

$3,762 of which is due to a tobacco surcharge
Your estimated tax credit:
$10,199
(which covers 68% of the overall premium)
Your estimated 2014 total premium costs including the tax credit:
$4,891 per year
(which equals 19.56% of your household income and covers 32% of the overall premium)

Not only is this for a Silver plan, with massive deductables, but the estimated tax credit is a hoax. The credit is against tax liability, not a rebate like the EIC. My tax liability this year was $1,400, so if my income remains that same, after shelling out $15,089 in premiums for a year, I would receive a tax credit of $1,400 on my 2014 tax return. This means the premiums alone would actually cost me $13,689, about half my income. If I actually need medical attention, I will have the additional expense of the large deductible, and then 30% of all charges after that.

This is affordable? What a joke. Thank you libtards and obamatrons for re-electing this empty suit.

If the Republicans where smart, they'd have allowed the ACA to go through. After folks found out the truth about this, and ended up paying through the nose for health care, a Democrat couldn't get elected to dog catcher in 2016.

You would think so, but unfortunately we should never underestimate the something-for-nothing entitlement mindset of a sizable percentage of the voting population.

I mean, I just today started an individual plan (not Obamacare - free market) and am going to pay about 6k annually for a reasonably good co-pay plan. Maybe you should shop around... obamacare doesn't mean you have to buy their plan, any plan will keep you from having to pay the penalty.

This saddens me.

I've always said people should be asking why the insurance companies were and are 100% in favor of Obamacare

1400 liability, 1400 credit?

Am I missing something or do you want them to pay you?

My folks were paying 1500 a month prior to going on Medicare. That was a unsubsidesed group rate through his employer since he retired early. Premiums suck.

Just pat the hunnert or two and skip it. Who needs insurance anyway.

I am being sarcastic by the way. I hope you find something that world for you.

No, the proponents of this plan claim, that due to my low income, I'd get a $10,199 subsidy to help pay for the insurance. In reality, it's more like $1,400. Most lower income folks will not get anywhere near the subsidy they are told they will be getting. Many won't know this until they file their 2014 tax return. Further proof of the lies and deception.

Yes, a 56 year old tobacco user, and a 54 year old non-tobacco user. Like I'm going to spend half my income on this abortion of a health plan. Come on dude, you know me better then that.

I haven't seen the rates yet because the healthcare site is an unoptimized POS, but I'm really surprised you guys don't like it. There are restrictions preventing insurance companies from charging older folks more than a certain amount over the young, prevents them from denying due to preexisting conditions, and yet requires the young and healthy to buy insurance or pay a penalty. All this means is that the young will subsidize the old.

Remember the tax credit is paid directly to the insurance company to reduce how much you have to pay every month.

I'm scared that this will kill my $100/mon private market insurance plan. I don't qualify for tax credits since my wife's employers offers insurance, but it would cost 3x what I'm paying now to add me to her plan. I suppose I'll find out soon.

See, that's what I, and most Americans thought, but from the multiple sources I've read on this, it seems to be a lie. Do a search on exactly how the subsidy is paid, and I think you'll be shocked. From the research I've done, you have to pay the entire premium, up front, and then you receive the subsidy as a tax credit when you file your 2014 return. Bad enough that folks have to pay out the entire premium up front, but here's the real kicker. Since the subsidy is in a form of a credit against actual tax liability (not a refund like the EIC), most lower income folk aren't going to receive anywhere near the subsidy they're being told they will. Look at my example. I'm told that I'm getting over $10,000 in subsidy when signing up, but will actually only get $1,400 due to my low tax liability.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I've done research, and this is what I've found. If this is true, then once again, this administration is outright lying to the American people.

The subsisdy is paid to the insurance company to reduce the premium if you chose that option . That is right in the plan and a fact.

What is a subsidy Jack and who is paying it?

You do know in PLAIN fact the subsidy will be state responsibility in a year. The states in some bad conditions are states that are seeing cost INCREASES. Good for you living in a state where costs will go down!

I think the subsidy part is unsisstainable but the Gauranteed acceptance and an option to Cobra are good things, Plus SHOP allows small businesses to get group plans that base premium on each individual age rather than having young people pay bloated premiums to subsidize us FOGS.

The small company I worked looked into group insurance a few years ago and the quoted price was at least 4x what I could get on the private market, as I was a lot younger than everyone. The only people that wanted it were people with existing health problems, and the insurance company refused to insure just them.

Of course the exchanges will offer bloated premiums to young people, and now we're required to pick one.

If I could just get registered and logged in, I'd be able to get numbers.

Actually your plan will be based on your age in the exchange.. ^^^

Also the plan you have will probably still be avaiable.

Many alternate plans are out there at very reasonable rates

even if it doesn't quite fit minimum govt require ments you can still take an alternate plan and pay the 95 dollar penalty for the year,,

Robert, I never had, nor do I now, have the desire to ever sign up for this. My post was to show an example of what others who actually thought they'd end up with cheap or free insurance are going to find. Not free, and definitely not cheap.

Well in Cali they aren't allowed to ask about the HIV your mom gave me.

But I do think they were expecting me to be setting up an insurance fraud when I called them the day before the insurance kicked in and was very specifically asking whether my insurance would be accepted at urgent care facilities the next day in the event I needed stitches or xrays.

That seems like a stupid assumption.

If people didn't have insurance, but had an emergency, they went to the emergency room.
If people did have insurance, but had an emergency, they went to the emergency room.
Some subset of people who didn't have insurance, but had a problem they needed looking at, went to the emergency room.

Now, if everyone has insurance, seems only the first 2 groups would go to the emergency room.
The third group would schedule with their primary care physician, as normal.

Primary care doctors, and emergency rooms are two different groups. There may not be enough primary care doctors, but there shouldn't be a burden on emergency rooms.

I don't like obamacare, but make better arguments.

Somewhere in the last week I found a calculator.

My silver plan would run me 11K a year.

That's a few grand more than I pay with my co-funded plan at work.

If I had to pay that additional out of my pocket, with rising food and energy costs, no buying new toys, dinners out, new car etc.

Goes back to my question on another post, why kill the middle class? We generate all your ill-gotten gains, we fund very boon doggle project and if the trains run on time we don't squawk to much.

Why kill the goose that lays all these golden eggs? Are these people that dumb?

You make us all broke and guess what, we'll get pissed off and when we don't buy crap you than can't buy crap.

Healthy and prosperous middle class is a license to steal, they should be promoting anything and everything to keep us vibrant.

Stupid sh1ts.

Actually an interesting article.
It appears people are willing to absorb the cost of an emergency room visit rather than simply wait for a doctor's appointment for minor sprains/pain.

I don't see why an ER visit would be necessary then. that's what Urgent Care clinics are for. Every time I had something that wasn't going to go away on it's own (broken bones, haematoma that needs draining, that sort of thing) I would go to an urgent care facility which accepted my plan. Walk in, get fixed up, walk out. Maybe I'd tell my primary care dr about it at a later date.

I am crossing my fingers and trying not to be pessimistic about the plan.
My wife and I have been without health insurance for 5 years. We are both in our 60's when we need decent healthcare the most.
We have serious pre-existing conditions. I had a skydiving accident and broke my back and neck. Plus diabetes. And severe degenerative disk disease.
My poor wife is a cancer survivor and has osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. She fell in the tub last month and snapped a rib in two.
I fell down the stairs and broke my foot and toes. My foot and toes were black and swollen...and the ER took one X-ray and told me I'm fine. Just a sprain. Meanwhile, all my toes are out of whack. Those damn bastardos!

My Medicare sucks the big choda.
If Obamacare doesn't work for us, we're screwed.
