Crowd storms World War II Memorial

WASHINGTON - Thousands of people converged on the World War II Memorial on the National Mall on Sunday morning and tore down the barricades blocking it off, protesting the closure of the memorial during the federal government shutdown.

Beginning at about 9:30 a.m., Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, as well as former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, were among the luminaries in a crowd that chanted "Tear down these walls!" and sang "God Bless America" as well as other patriotic songs as they entered the memorial, which has been closed since the government shutdown that began Oct. 1.

Tractor-trailers headed down 17th Street toward the Mall, blaring their horns. The Metropolitan Police Department blocked off the street, prompting the crowd to head up the street, shouting at the police to move their vehicles.

Palin said that closing the memorials was disgraceful, and that President Obama "could be here today, saying 'Yes, we can tear down these barricades."

Cruz said that President Obama was using veterans as political pawns in the shutdown. Lee shouted, "The sons and daughters of the United States of America are meant to live in liberty."

By 11 a.m., the group had headed back to the memorial, and dozens congregated around World War II veterans, shaking their hands and thanking them for their service.

Later in the morning, veteran Mike Lauriente was accepting handshakes from demonstrators. He served in Sicily and French Morocco, and declared the memorial, which he was seeing for the first time, beautiful. "The spirit that I see here is overwhelming."

Kinda like the Sen Dems rebranding H.R. 3590 which was a house bill regarding tax breaks for service members and using it as its vehicle for Obamacare to avoid the requirement that spending bills must originate in the House.

Pelosi is a piece of crap. Palin is not a hypocrite- I just think she is a dimly lit, publicity whore who believes it is just fine to attack ACA instead of using acceptable methods. As to your attempt to slur me by alluding to Rick, you owe both of us an apology.

More political theatre of the absurd. Who cares? Really, who gives a chit? I may not have food or health benefits but let them mess with MY national memorials and I'm going postal (unless it is some BS federal "holiday" - i.e. Columbus day). fog

I agree about remembering history. But do you really believe that visiting a national Memorial is going to enlighten people about WWII more than actually studying about it in school or reading about it? My point was that it is a joke when these assbag politicians are partially to blame for the shutdown in the first place. Have you been personally been affected by the temporary closure of any of these Memorials? These politicians want to have us believe that they give two squirts of piss about any of us by storming this Memorial that they caused to be closed. What a bad joke.

No argument, it's the choice of the Obama administration to actively (vindictively) deny a access to monuments that belong to the citizens. This is especially true for those citizens that spilled their blood in the wars the monuments represent. Obama's true colors became apparent when this issue came to light and he didn't immediately open the monuments, especially to veterans from WWII who may not have another day or week to come back. All politics aside, it turns my stomach and the blame is squarely on Obama.

Enlightened?? I dunno....but I DO believe that when a person actually sees all those names which represent lives lost defending either Our freedoms both here and abroad. I think ThAT sight is quite overwhelming and I'm not convinced that one gets " that " impact from reading a book. Besides, we've become so PC and left leaning that our screwels have stopped teaching a lot of this!!And all said and done, I do believe there are adequate opportunities to prevent anyone from starving....and most regardless of income receive medical care.

Interesting statement when it is Congress that holds the purse strings to the government not Obama. And politics is the only thing that this government shutdown is about. Both sides will only be satisfied if they can claim some sort of "victory" in all of this mess. Until then all of america is being held hostage to our broken two party political system.

In the big picture, yes, but the chain of command for the people closing the monuments goes right up to Obama.

Oh so true. If every President had to walk the length of the Vietnam Memorial before sending any US troops into harms way we might not be sticking our nose into other people's business so often.

Years ago my wife and I spent about a week in DC. We visited the Vietnam Memorial. We walked from the Smithsonian where they had a display of items left at the Vietnam memorial. At that time it was next to another display depicting an interment (concentration) camp where Japanese citizens of the USA were interned. Needless to say, we already had some grit in our eyes. When we spotted the monument it we could see the black line of stone. It didn't look that big, but when you get there it is very tall, quite long and the text that represent all those name is quite small. If you go there it will stay with you.
