Hospital Bills vs Living Will

So, the Munoz case brought up a very interesting dilemma.

Munoz had a specific directive to pull the plug on her if she was ever brain dead.

Her husband was willing and able to comply with that directive.

The Hospital, refused that instruction based on a law stating you couldn't pull the plug on a pregnant woman.

So who should eat this bill?

The Hospital? They refused to comply with the patient and her husband's wishes....
The State? They're the ones demanding the ongoing care....
The Munoz family? Do we want to start a precedent of the state being able to legislate you receive specific medical care and force you to pay for it?

So far it looks like the Munoz family is going to be billed for life support they didn't want.

This was truly a catastrophe... the woman was 14 weeks pregnant. Did they really intend to keep her alive another 6 months and expect a baby to develop anywhere near normally? The balance of hormones required for fetal development is kind of important and there's no reason to believe that a brain dead lump of meat is going to have the proper systems triggered at the proper times.

So, who do you think should pay for stupid decisions like this?

My vote is the taxpayers of Texas, as they're the ones who made this requirement.

If she had a DNR on file, and the husband was complying, the Hospital should eat the bill. There's got to be a little common sense used in cases like this.
Too much government interference in our lives already. If the Supreme Court determined you have a "right to choose", why should this be any different? It's not the government's choice to make...

"Right to choose" abortion is an interesting take on all this. It probably should prevail... Think

Isn't this exactly what Obama Care does?

Obamacare doesn't actually force you to receive care. You could never go to the Dr again if you want. You still have to pay for insurance though.

However, it isn't too much of a stretch to see financial incentives for annual checkups and other preventative measures eventually, through whatever central organization will be managing the exchanges.

My BCBS coverage already pays me $25 for getting an annual flu/pneumonia shot.

Technically that's still part of a contractual agreement between yourself and BCBS (a theoretically independent business). It's no different than a discount for going to the gym regularly which isn't technically any different than paying less if you're younger or more if you're older, or additional charges for smokers. The business is gambling on your health being better than what they're charging you (and anything you can do to improve/prove that makes them more secure in the gamble).

Things get a little weirder when it's a government entity... you've got a power imbalance, since they can make laws you're expected to obey. Currently, they are only requiring that you purchase insurance. They aren't collecting the money, a private insurance company is... but if they ever do get involved in the cash collection side, it will open up some very interesting opportunities for social engineering.

They should make the pro-life lobby pay for it, one way or the other.
That is what is wrong with our healthcare, people want right to life, but only god gives that for free. We are having to pay for going against god's will.
Tried of them reaching into our pockets to pay for their beliefs. Start billing them and watch what they say- live and let die!! just like they do for those border babies; somehow right to life doesnt matter there.

Buncha damn commies, whats wrong with them, each man for himself is capitalism.

If you passed a law that said the healthcare cost of a pregnant woman who is in a coma must be shouldered by those who believe she should be kept alive artificially. You know what they would say, dont even drive that ambulance to the hospital, send her to mexico.

I myself would say give me the bill, god gave me what i have so that i can help those in need.

I am just tried of the hypocrites who have one hand on the bible and another in my pocket because they want their beliefs but dont want to pay for it.

They have all these unholy contradicting values, such as its ok to let another christian suffer as long as its on the other side of the fence we made, or exploit cheap labor from these same folks.
Heck we enjoy delicious cigars and have the time to fart around on a blog because some poor sonmabitch is working his back off trying to make these cigars for less than 50cents (to the manufacturer) And what do we do, piss on them on these blogs while sucking on one of their Delicious stoogies.

Bunch a hypocrites

Incidentally; if good cigars is the only thing we have taken from these poor people, we have taken far more than has ever been taken from us.

...and we aint even got to the tequila or rum.

Well I see him on the Tv
Preachin' bout the promise land
He tells me to believe in Jesus
And steals the money from my hand

Some say he was a good man
But Lord I think he sinned, yeah...

Interesting definition you created for capitalism. fog

Here I always thought that it was an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market or some such thing. ram27bat

Blah, Blah is right!!!

This is what has gone wrong with our country, the dumbest of dumb, the lowest of low are discussing topics they dont even understand. The same folks that stay up for a 500 thread or playing with themselves to some youngens picture way outside their league, they dont even have cousins that look like that and yet on the internet they can.

Blah blah blah is the deepest thought.

Victor this will answer your question about who should foot the bill.

Look right here, we have folks that have gotten so fat of the tit, that they have the luxury to diddle themselves to pics of young girls when there is some poor son of a bitch working his ass off to make this life possible for him. In the mother of all ironies, the spoilt folks are spiting down on all these so called lower classes. This older generation wants us to believe that the dead weight is the guy mowing my lawn and he is the one sucking up all the healthcare. In reality, they are, and the revolution has begun- look no further than Obama's victory- twice. Its a matter of time when we say you old folks had it too well. Remember, they did the same to the generation that was older than them.
