Dan Quayle moment? Obama flubs spelling of 'respect'
Published March 07, 2014 •

Could a White House spell-off be in the works between President Obama and former Vice President Dan Quayle?

In a throwback to the latter's infamous misspelling of the word "potato," Obama accidentally misspelled "respect" while introducing singer Aretha Franklin during a tribute to "Women of Soul" at the White House Thursday.

“When Aretha first told us what … R-S-P-E-C-T meant to her,” Obama said, pausing briefly before the audience began laughing, apparently realizing his mistake. “She had no idea it would become a rallying cry for African Americans and women and anyone else who felt marginalized because of what they looked like, who they loved. They wanted some respect.”

Also looking for some respect is Quayle, who in 1992 was schooled by a sixth grader on how to spell potato.

Quayle was at the Munoz Rivera Elementary School spelling bee in Trenton, N.J., when he relied on a notecard provided by the school on the spelling of the word potato, a word used in the contest. The notecard incorrectly added an “e” to the end of the word, and Quayle advised the student to spell it that way.

In his 1994 autobiography, Quayle called the day “a defining moment of the worst kind imaginable." He added, “Politicians live and die by the symbolic sound bite.”

It was Otis Redding that first told us what "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" meant to us. Aretha flipped it around to a women's point of view and had the "hit" with the song.
Isn't RSPECT the Russian spelling for respect? Damn commie. Sarcasm

In 25 hours we'll have forgotten all about this, despite having bashed a former VP for over 25 years for a similar error.

25 hours... hell its Friday and just about time for my weekend to start... I've already forgotten about it. Just wait till one of the Kardashians or some other idiot farts and the US will have forgotten that we are still at war, in debt up to our eyeballs, etc, etc., etc... What these idiots do is the most important news that we have ever heard. ram27bat

Just going to throw this out there...

but we ARE talking about two different types of mistake, and everyone involved realizes it.

One is an actual spelling error. As in, if you asked Quayle to spell potato 10 times in a row (without correcting him the first time) he would spell it exactly the same.

The second is a speaking error. While he made an error in spelling respect out loud, no one believes he ACTUALLY doesn't think there is an "e" between the R&S. If you asked him to spell it a second time, he would have included the "E".

But sure... the whiners that want to hang their party on the "poor us, we're picked on more than the other" cross will whine and pretend these are exactly the same error.

^^^ No matter how you justify it, it was a major slip-of-the-tongue especially in front of the group he was speaking to. But of course it's not his fault so its OK.

Couple things:
1. It's not the mistake that proves the media hypocrisy. It's the attention given to it. Remember when Bush tried to use binoculars with the lens cap on? That was played for years.

2. It would be very unlikely that Dan Quayle would have spelled potato with an E. The Veep's brain was on cruise control. He was assisting with a spelling bee by reading cue cards. The CARD spelled it "potatoe". Nobody in that position would think to do a fact check on the cue cards.

Yes, Obama knows how to spell respect.
He just doesn't know how to show any when it comes to our Constitution or our Country.

Jade, very funny!

I think these are minor spelling errors on both parts. Quails has been perpetuated for 2 reasons my mind.
1) The student called him am idiot.
2) The general perception of him is that he is an idiot.

While I think it is fair to feel Obama has been an ineffective president I do not feel it is fair to bash him on all levels. I did not feel this was fair to W either.

I do find it interesting that no matter what opinion Victor has it ends up being viciously attacked by someone or many. If his opinion is correct or not is certainly open for debate; if it is logical or not is not open for debate. When a logical opinion is stated, refuting it logically makes sense. A vicious angry response is just something I laugh at.

1. Did the student really say that? I never heard that before.
2. The general perception? We're talking chicken and egg here. When the media is slanted the perception becomes reality.

As for Obama? Of course he can spell respect.
But he's far from ineffective.
He has used his majority to ramrod budget breaking programs down our throat.
Think stimulus.
Think obamacare.

He's been too effective because he has divided our country along party lines. A sitting president has never before been so divisive while being so indecisive on important matters. (Hello Benghazi. Welcome Ukraine).

But that's not the perception. Because your media outlets don't broadcast these facts between episodes of the kardashians.

The student calling him an idiot is direct from the Washington Post. Also I purposely misspelled Quayle so everyone could note my inability to spell.

Why?

The guy has produced 2 fabricated documents! See if YOU can get away with doing that. The Kenyan King's first act was to seal his transcripts. Why was that? Willing to bet it was because he used his passport so he could get his education at a discount...oh wait...that was paid for by...yeah...there's nothing but questions with this. Questions that people are willing to give him a complete pass on.

Not me.

So because I see a difference between two types of error, I'm a "toolbag"? If you want to have an infantile argument, go talk with your children and allow the adults to have a rational conversation.

1 - I don't defend Obama. I've stated NUMEROUS times the things which he has chosen to do which I disagree with. If you don't have the mental capacity to understand my sentences, or the ability to remember simple things it isn't my fault.

2 - Your choice, and the choice of all the other idiots to focus on irrelevant things to attack the president with does two things, it shows that you don't have the ability to actually grasp the larger problems he has created or perpetuated, and it distracts individuals who may actually have been able to understand real issues and turns the entire political process into a circus.

Every time you open your mouth or put fingers to keyboard, you actually hurt your cause.... you should allow the adults to discuss adult topics.

That's an interesting point. I suppose the media coverage should have been more along the lines of "quayle punked by spelling bee organizers"... still would have gotten a lot of attention, but been more accurate.

It's the presentations as much as it's the frequency.
When Bush goofed, it was offered to the american lemmings as proof that he's an imbecile.
When Obama talked about 57 states, it was almost without exception preceded by a detail of his 100+ hour campaign binge and the gaff was simply proof that he was tired.

I don't think it requires a rewrite.
I was just using the facts to prove how peoples perception was/is swayed by the media, even when they claim otherwise.

Lets not forget Dumbass Quayle did more than just misspell a word on a chalkboard, that a student had spelled correctly. This moron wrecked the economy as vice president. And never won the race.

President Obama on the other hand won the race twice and has made the stock market grow consistently for five years, to its highest it has ever been. We have never lived in more prosperous times. Because other times when it has rallied, it has lasted 4 years maximum. This president has doubled my portfolio and 401k, and I did not vote for him.

Thank You Obama, history will also thank you.

Wait a minute.....vice president Quayle wrecked the economy? Did he attend the wrong funerals or something?!

The problem with using the stock market growth as a prosperity indicator is only around half the country even own stocks directly or through some 401K or pension. (It must suck to be them right now!) Where Obama has definitely affected the market is he maintained and even increased the corporate welfare and graft. I always chuckled when he promised to cut corporate welfare.

So basically what you're saying is that the "O" administration and Dems have "bought" your vote and approval. Did you get a free iPhone, cell & internet service too?

The market would have grown regardless of the "O" being in office. He's done nothing to directly impact the stock market or create jobs.

Your portfolio may have doubled, but let's not forget the values dropped to half of what they where first! So basically you are no further ahead than if the market held a steady pace instead of crashing.

But keep drinking that kool-aid.

Bush cut those values in half. Unfortunately many got out at that time, believing that no way would Obama turn it around.

Very similar to the accerlation into an extra war and a chitload of debt that W put on the tab, and watched it crash down on O.

If that was remotely correct, the republicans would not bother running for the next election. They would just wait till it went to hell in a handbasket and win the election by a landslide. They would never send their best man in when the economy has crashed. Thats why they sent the now forgotten Palin and McCain, once the economy got good they sent in Romney.

The market has now learned a valuable lesson, when a republican is in office, your net worth will be halved.
