Patent office cancels Redskins trademarks

By Ben Brody @CNNMoney June 18, 2014: 10:16 AM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

The U.S. Patent Office has canceled trademarks belonging to the Redskins football team, saying they are offensive to Native Americans.
In a decision released Wednesday, the office's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ruled that the "that these registrations must be canceled because they were disparaging to Native Americans."

The board also said it lacked the authority to prevent the team from continuing to use the trademarks. .

The decision came in response to a suit brought by what the board called "five Native Americans."

Though I believe they should change their name, this is a personal issue for Dan Snyder to decide. I am outraged that this is now political. I hope he sues and wins, a message needs to be sent that we are a democracy. This action is very heavy handed and just plain wrong.

I didn't care for the Chief Wahoo platform, and the chicks were hotter in the Blue Gums party. Plus Bloody hated them.

To think that there's seed from that Bassard that " others " will have to deal with in their lifetime is....heartbreaking!!

Life is Too short to have folks like that stealing oxygen away from the rest of us. Harry is a disgusting human being and it doesn't appear that his " fruit " rolled very far from the tree.

I know, and I'm certain they were behind the BLM / cattle fiasco as well. But alas and far be it from me to understand WHY are these people SO insulated from the LAW??? Rather they ( Bundy's )owed back taxes or not, you can BET the farm that Harry and CO. Allowed the " back taxes " to accumulate so they had a " legal " reason to Throw them off Federal land, and of course collect those taxes.

With ALL due respect, where does it end? When the Law and or Constitution begins to work " Harder " for the individuals rights OVER what the Majority believe .....we're screwed. As you pointed out and I agree, this is a privately owned business and if the Indian Nation is offended then I would expect them to NOT SUPPORT that team or it's owner. But to force political correctness on others is every BIT as wrong headed. Where the HELL is all this false outrage coming from lately anyway? It's not like he just bought and named his team. I'm personally " offended " by the whole Gay rights movement......my outrage goes unnoticed, and their Bill of Rights.....keeps growing.

Obama has decided the issue by forcing the patent office. The true outrage was on par with something from a homeowners association.

TM, I think that all your points are valid. What really bothers me is that we as a people are seeing way to much of big brother telling us how to think. No matter what the issue the government is way over the line when they intervene with our thoughts. You are offended by homosexual people, I am not. I am offended by the Washington Redskins name, you are not. These are issues for personal or group debate, not for government intervention. Also there is no reason that we have to agree. And yes where the He11 does it stop. To me it is about common sense. Our government seems to no longer have any.

And round and round it goes.

http://files.redskins.com/pdf/Statement-by-Bob-Raskopf-Trademark-Attorney-for-the-Washington-Redskins.pdf

Apparently this has happened before, and didn't come to anything then either.
A few things to note:
- What would make anyone think obama is involved in the patent office?
- This wouldn't stop the Redskins from using their image. Just would stop them from going after counterfeit clothing. Worst case scenario, the team will take a hit in merch revenue.
- For your amusement - Native Americans wearing a "Caucasians" jersey. http://colorlines.com/archives/2014/06/a_tribe_called_red_in_the_hot_seat_for_wearing_caucasian_t-shirts.html

Personally I hate the redskins and don't give a **** about them but this is pretty ****. I think they should change their logo every 4 years to have the prez (of whicever party) with a butt for a face holding bags of lobbiest money while giving the finger to the american flag..... maybe George Washington on a hill in the background with tears in his eyes.

That would be amusing.
The limited edition nature of the uniforms would allow them to really jack the prices up. And some merch would become collectors editions.

Actually Snyder could make a lot of money off this. Sue the patent office. Announce an upcoming name and logo change. Watch huge sales of soon to be obsolete gear. Then do the change and watch huge sales of new gear. Just for fun change the name to the RedHawks to keep part of the original name.

If this idiocy continues, I suppose the Braves, Indians, Chiefs, Blackhawks, Seminoles, and Warriors are in trouble too. If PETA decides to defend the animal kingdom, the Tigers, Bears, Cardinals, etc. will have to change. Help us if those born above the Mason Dixon line feel offended by the Yankees. Our world has spun out of control. Another national embarrassment....

Pretty scary stuff that the U.S Patent office can make something non-existent with just the stroke of a pen.
