#FreeTheNipple: This Bikini Top Sticks Two FingersUp To Censorship

Rachel Moss The Huffington Post UK 24/06/14 23:22

Head to a beachthissummer and you might seea bunch of women walking around withtheir nipples on show. But, beforeyou drop your ice-cream cone on the floor and gawk, know that all may not be asit first seems.

Thewomen may very well be sportingthe new TaTa Top - a bikini top withtwo pink nipples emblazoned onto the cups.

At first glance thetop may seem like somehilariousprank, but dig slightly below thesurface and its creatorshavea distinctly more feminist agenda.

While men are free to walk shirtless as they please, being toplessif you're a woman is illegal in some Americanstates.

Withthat in mind the bizarrely realistic garment has been created in order to tacklethe lack of gender equality when it comesto bearing all.

On their websitethemakersof the bikini, Robyn Gravesand Michelle Lytle, write: "Why can’t girlsbe topless? If you really think about it, what’sthedifference between a man’snipples and a woman’s? Isit really just theextra breast tissue? Is it the fact that women’s nipplesare paired with a vagina?

"Isit the presence of a real and true female nipplebare to the world that is so offensive, that is so horrid that it must bekept covered?

"Who isthislaw protecting and what are they protecting them from? What messagedoesit send to young women about their bodies? That they should be ashamed and keep themcovered?"

Although not directly associated, the bikini hits(online) shelvesin the wake of the #FreeTheNipple movement.

Thecampaign - originally started by filmmaker Lina Esco - hasseen hundredsof womenparadetopless around New York to end gender-specific double standards.

As a four or five year old I though the idea that boys could go shirtless and girls could not was unfair and stupid.

Back in the 1970s, I used to go to lots of feminist rallies, to uh, show my support while they removed theirs.

If I were a un-married man, I would be at any and all equal nipple rights rallies I could find today. Any man that can go to one, should. Agree with everything being said, don't stare, and you will have a wonderful night with a breakfast quite likely to follow!
