RINCON PENINSULA, Texas -- U.S. Border Patrol agents on the American side of the Rio Grande were forced to take cover Friday night when high-caliber weaponry was fired at them from the Mexican side of the river, sources told FoxNews.com.

The weapons were fired at the U.S. side of the riverbank in the area of the Rincon Peninsula across the Rio Grande from Reynosa, Mexico, at about 8:30 p.m., sources said. Bullets ricocheted into an area where Border Patrol agents were positioned, Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, told FoxNews.com.

Border Patrol sources confirmed Gohmert's account, and said the shots may have been fired by .50-caliber weapons.

"We don't have any armor that can stop a .50-caliber round, so our Border Patrol agents had to take cover when the rounds were richocheting around them," said Gohmert, who has been in the area for the last week to get a first-hand look at the border situation.

"When the shooting stopped, about 40 to 50 people came out on the U.S. side and turned themselves in. So clearly the rounds were being fired to suppress every effort to stop anybody intervening with anyone or anything coming across," Gohmert added. "We have no idea what or how many or whom came across with the other illegal immigrants."

Sources said they believe the gunfire came from members of Mexican drug cartels, which include former military members trained in shooting that type of weaponry.

Border Patrol sources said the rounds were clearly identifiable because .50- caliber weapons make a distinctive noise when fired. Sources said they also believe this is the first time that Border Patrol agents have taken direct fire from the Mexican side of the river in this area.

"I don't know why we're out here like sitting ducks," one Border Patrol source said. "We need help."

As of Saturday evening, a Border Patrol spokesman did not immediately return FoxNews.com's request for comment.

The Rio Grande sector has been the busiest part of the 2,000-mile border with Texas in recent months as a surge of illegal immigrants, many from Central America, has poured in to the U.S. in the mistaken belief that U.S. policy allows for them to remain in America once they make it in. More than 60,000 unaccompanied children had crossed in the last nine months. But Border Patrol officials have warned that the deluge has left the border largely unattended, and vulnerable to cartel infiltration.

We need to invade and conquer Mexico once and for all. That would end the illegal immigration problem.

Problem with that is that many og the illegals are not from Mexico. All we would be doing is moving the problem to the "new" southern boarder. We need action on the boarder not 4 billion in funds to house them.

This is the first time they've taken .50 cal fire THERE but the boarder patrol has taken Mexican Army fire from a VEHICLE mounted .50 cal before.

It's a fuggin joke. No fence, we need better equipment and a meaner ROE.

Only Clinton has had less vacation days then Obama out of the last three presidents. I don't know where you get your information but if you think that Obama is taking more vacation days then previous presidents your information is wrong.

Much like the Feds have been advertising in Mexico and S. America to come HERE and " exploit " ( my wording ) the American people and businesses / schools and healthcare facilities ......Perhaps the people of Texas / Arizona need to take out some ADs asking for help with their border.....you know since the turds in charge of it WON'T do anything to stem the tide!!!!

As for the OP itself, I think the great wall of Texas has a nice ring to it. Put in gun turrets at set intervals. Problem solved. Betting this could be done with 3.8 billion.

Who's fault this is doesn't actually change your "nut-job" status, you do realize this, right? I mean, obama could start carrying south american welfare babies across the border, and you'd still be a "nut-job".

If the Mexican army is shooting at the USA, then we've got a good-old war on our hands. Send in the marines and take mexico. We could use a new domestic vacation spot, I'm sick of using my passport to get to Cabo or Playa del Carmen.

If it isn't the Mexican army shooting at us, then I guess it isn't something we really can do anything about. Sounds like a police issue in Mexico.

That sounds like a problem.
I'm just asking whether we're taking fire from drug cartels, Mexican Army, or Poncho Villa.

I mean, I guess I could just yell and scream.... that seems to be the modus operandi here. That doesn't seem productive though.

I heard that Homeland Security intends to use yelling and screaming on cigar forums as a social experiment to improve the gene pool. After all they have to do something with their stockpiled ammunition.

Not really. I don't have an opinion on this at all.

There's not enough information for form an opinion.

This is what I know:
A bullet crossed the border. someone said it sounds like a .50cal.

Z says that a rocket crossed the border.

TCBY is obsessed with me.

This is not enough information to come to any conclusion.

Working in Austin, I've talked to several State Troopers about incidents like this. I'm surprised this is the first time there has been any mention of weapons such as the .50 being used. From what they've told me, they've gotten into small firefights plenty of times where they've taken fire from what they have suspected were .50's.

I think congress should pass a bill limiting the Presidents ability to fundraise and providing him with a finite number of vacation days. Then if he vetos it he is a deek. Even if they over ride the veto then the courts will knock it down. We can spend tons of money making a point then have it washed away. The bitchin would be epic and for that alone I am for it.

While I don't disagree with you, making sure citizens of another country follow the laws.... that's a police action. We don't have an outstanding track record of being able to do those cheaply.
