New York Times: Legalize marijuana

By CRAIG HOWIE | 7/26/14 6:58 PM EDT

The New York Times’ editorial board on Saturday called on the federal government to legalize marijuana.

Citing alcohol prohibition, social costs and states’ movements, the board argued “after a great deal of discussion” that “the balance falls squarely on the side of national legalization.”

“We considered whether it would be best for Washington to hold back while the states continued experimenting with legalizing medicinal uses of marijuana, reducing penalties, or even simply legalizing all use. Nearly three-quarters of the states have done one of these,” the editorial said.

“But that would leave their citizens vulnerable to the whims of whoever happens to be in the White House and chooses to enforce or not enforce the federal law.”

The newspaper’s editorial board has repeatedly argued in favor of legalizing medicinal marijuana. The board suggested proscribing recreational sales of the drug to people aged under 21.

The state of New York earlier this month became the 23rd state to legalize the use of medicinal marijuana — albeit in a non-smokable form.

The editorial’s release — under the headline Repeal Prohibition, Again — caused a stir on social media on a quiet Saturday in the news cycle. The Times has sought to capture some of that audience in a Facebook Q&A slated for Monday at, of course, 4:20 p.m.

“Our readers are highly engaged with the editorial board, on social media and on our blog ‘Taking Note,’ and with this series of editorials, we wanted to deepen that engagement with a more personal approach,” editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal said in a statement.

Lot's of room for debate here.

Should it be viewed through the same glasses one looks at prohibition?

or, Should we do everything possible to eradicate it?

Legalize it.

Generally speaking the war on drugs has been a colossal failure on almost every front.

The moment this substance is legalized, America gains a little liberty back.

Liberty from the police state which has used the "war" to jail otherwise law abiding citizens, and to legally steal their possessions, and ruin their lives, over some pot.

Also, liberty from being forced into a warrant-less police search of ones property, because the police say they smelled marijuana. That is presently all it takes for the police to do a warrant-less search of an American's property.

I GAF what you, and other LEO's think on this subject, or are you guys not allowed to opine?

I'm curious because I know that drug legalization, of any kind, will be devastating, financially, to all police agencies who rely heavily on the proceeds of property seized from drug raids to buy stuff for their respective departments. So what say you?

Yes. It should require a prescription that comes from a doctor who also offers methadone. Heoin is easy to get if you want it. Take the illicit use out of the marketplace, avoid incarcerations and have better "control".

I don't think legalizing pot would be as devastating as many other drugs... at least it didn't out here...

the only people associated with marijuana who lose stand to lose equipment, property, or anything worth any money are very large scale growers, and the majority of them are operating illegally on federal land...

there are lots of busts in the sierra national forest... all they ever get are a couple of illegal aliens, a couple shotguns, and a ton of trash...

no money to be made unless they're reselling the pot... but I think we all know they're smoking it and giving it to their college age kids...

I find it completely hypocritical that NY is calling for legal MJ, but wants to make large sugary drinks illegal?!?!
WTF??? Haven't these politicians heard of cotton-mouth?

Big Pharm will never allow the complete legalization in the US.

MJ is a gateway - you start as a kid with Mexican brown weed, then try a little Acapulco Gold. You get the crutch so you reach for some Thai Stick to lean on. Peer pressure leads to some hash under glass. Sinsemilla becomes your everyday smoke, and then you move to CO!

IDK, still haven't been able to beat some material from back in the day. Still think there's something to be said for grown in dirt for a longer time as opposed to hydro done in a few months. The quality may have increased overall, but items like Thai Stick, Blonde, Red, & Black hash have disappeared or been replaced by bubble hash (yuck), tincture, etc. Vapes can be expensive and cumbersome, and don't think they will ever replace a good piece of glass or Bambu paper. The edible industry has exploded however.

If pot was legal when I was a kid I would have been trying to get adults to buy it for me outside of pot stores, not too much different then I did for booze. The difference is I would have never been exposed to other drugs. The dealer/dealers I went to for pot had a vested interest in selling different products, there're called pushers for a reason.
IMO of course.

The "War" on Drugs is the same as the supposed "war" on terror...an abject doomed failure.

The money flushed down the toilet combating what?

Legalize it ALL...if someone wants to waste away doing drugs...let them pay for it and give the taxpayer a damned break!

Colorado is actually looking at reducing property taxes because of the new boom. Let THAT sink in for a minute.

Our town is reducing it's taxes this year, and the school systems have to rework their budgets due to the increase in money being forwarded to education.

Abrignac - NY State is looking to legalize MMJ.

We lost the war on drugs. Legalize them all, tax them all, control them all, and take the crime out of them all. If someone chooses to waste their life so be it. While not a perfect solution it is far better than what we have now. The tax money would be useful. By controlling them at least they would be clean. Our police would have more time to devote to stopping other crimes.

Customer: "Duuuuude, my order was late..."
CS: "Whaaat?"
Customer: "DUDE! My order was late."
CS: "Uh, Dude's not here man."
CS: "Sure you have the right number?"
Customer: "My order was late, dude!"
CS: "Who is dude?"
Customer: "Wouldn't a dorito flavored burrito be cool?"
CS: "I got mad munchies, I'll take two, man. "
