Target’s ‘Annie’ ads stir up controversy
Published December 30, 2014

Target is fighting back after being criticized for “Annie”-themed clothing ads showing a white model as Annie, as opposed to an African-American model, or Quvenzhané Wallis, the actress who plays the character in the holiday remake.

LaSean Rinique told Yahoo she launched a Change.org petition after her daughter, an “Annie” fan, noticed that a girl in the ads sporting Annie’s signature red dress and locket was white, unlike Wallis, who appears alongside Jamie Foxx in the movie remake.

“She saw the ad and said to me, ‘That’s not what Annie looks like. How come the new black Annie isn’t good enough? Does that mean I’m not good enough?’” Rinique told Yahoo.

But Target told FOX411 in a statement that at least one African-American model was featured in their "Annie" campaign.

"Girls from a variety of backgrounds were featured within the campaign, reflecting that anyone can embody the spirit and character of Annie," a store rep stated and supplied a photo showing one of the models is African-American.

In her petition, Rinique demanded Target remove the ads and issue an apology to Wallis.

“When the original Annie came out, everything was about Aileen Quinn or a character/person that emulated her...why not now Target?” Rinique challenges in the petition. “We demand that you immediately pull those misleading ads and give Quvenzhané Wallis her due respect as well as other little girls who aspire to be like her.”

Target told FOX411 Wallis was initially set to be a bigger part of the campaign but it did not pan out.

“As for the involvement of Quvenzhane Wallis, we had conversations with her team about being in the campaign, but ultimately it did not come to fruition,” Target stated. “Fortunately, we had the pleasure of working with Ms. Wallis a number of times, including appearances at Target’s sales meeting in September and a launch event in New York City in November. We had a great experience working with Ms. Wallis and appreciate her efforts in promoting this collection.”

Rinique was quick to post a response to Target’s explanation on her petition page.

“I appreciate the time taken to respond; however, if they feel that 'anyone' could embody the spirit of Annie....where is our face?” she wrote. “We figured that Ms. Quvenzhane could not model for the line; however a reasonable facsimile of Ms. Wallis would have been nice!”

Wasn't Annie white in the original movie, also starring Carol Burnett??

Never even heard there was a black remake. WGAF.

Manufactured controversy on both sides, with people like Drafter trying to stir it up to "Outrage" level.

Target sought to do a little co-branding with the re-release of Annie. However, their marketing group probably decided that the market segment they are trying to reach responds better to little white girls than little black girls (as the current Annie is cast) and set a white girl as primary in the ads.

Is this wrong? No. Target can market however they want.
So why is anyone upset? Well, my guess is that it's a bit of a reminder to some that despite everything, when marketing groups are trying to convince people to spend money on middle-america goods, the audience responds better to white faces. Even when the tie in of those goods is directly temporally tied to a black actress.

One cannot expect a business to worry about people's feelings however when marketing goods. If they did, they deserve to lose all their business.
However, it is well within a person's right to point out the irony that the clothing line is being co-marketed with a current release, yet seems to want to distance itself a bit from the specific demographic the movie is trying to reach out to.

Target can market how it wants.
This woman can complain however she wants, and start as many petitions as she wants. They are both essentially right.

This doesn't even really count as controversy.

You're the one trying to stir non-controversy all the way up to outrage.

You're like cbid's own little sharpton.

I heard that they had a Black Annie but when you squeezed it, it didn't say "Hands Up" or "I can't breathe" so they had to replace it.

My only beef with this is that it seems they're taking creative license against the authors' original intent. Annie was written as a pale faced freckled red head girl. Not black. Ian Fleming wrote Bond as a white Scottish Man. Not black. It almost smacks of plagiarism.

If skin color doesn't matter I want to see a white actor play Martin Luther King Jr. that'll show how one sided this is and show that racists aren't just white.

I love it that you guys are getting "outraged" over FICTIONAL CHARACTERS. How many of the actors that have played James Bond have been Scottish? Here is a hint, there was only one. fog

Where is your outrage over depictions of Jesus as a white bearded European instead of the more likely olive skinned Jewish middle easterner? I know of no physical description in the Bible of Jesus. Please let me know if there is one. Angel

My assumption is the movie was produced to make money. I think a studio spent their money, made a movie, and will make or lose money on that movie. For me, nothing outragious there.

I do find it very funny that anyone would protest a marketing campaign based solely on race. All company's have target demographics for any advertizing campaign. Target's goal is to make money. Again nothing outragious there.

First of all I don't sense outrage, perhaps a little curiosity.
Try to compare apples to apples, Bond = White dude...regardless of heritage ie: Scottish / British etc.
In fact while were on the subject, how would it fly if Whites started "demanding" that they be referred to as "Scottish Americans"...." British Americans"...." Italian Americans etc. and got Pissed off and used the ACLU or the Justice dept. to look into racial bias if this demand was not met? Because everyone knows how that works on the other side of the coin. As far as a depiction of Jesus and a correct depiction....no one really knows do they? However I have seen several depictions....ranging in skin color etc. Why is it when it comes to skin color we have been conditioned in school at a very young age to disregard skin color and on the whole Whites have done a Very good job of doing just that AND our Lawshave made certain we DO....it IS the people of color who continue to use it when convenient to further some crazy ass agenda. But Annie although a fictional character....was written as seen the first time, a RED headed White girl with freckles.

I think there was quite a bit of outrage over Sean Connery playing 007 because he was Scottish. Ian Fleming wanted a British actor to play him.

There's a raisin bran commercial on TV right now with Annie singing. Well, I think it's Annie. It sounds like a young derpy-nerdy white-girl, though.

Ah, what do I know, except that I'm hungry. Time for a late night snack of Oreos.

Wow !!! ... Now that I think about it, OREO !! . . . The Marching Guards from The Wizard of Oz !!

A Black Dorothy !! . . . Now, this is just getting comical.

Well, I think the Jesus outrage is much less among the percentage of the population that view him as fictional. And for the rest, he seems best suited to match out with the congregation at hand - doing his job as savior and all.

The real tickle is the white indignation I saw on TV this season about Black Santa Clauses. seems like we all have our race buttons to push.
