The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday voted 14-1 to set a $15 hourly minimum wage by 2020, the city announced on its website.

The council directed the city's attorney to prepare legislation that will phase in the new rate over several years, reaching $15 in 2020 for large businesses and in 2021 for smaller businesses and some nonprofits, with future adjustments to be pegged to increases in the costs of living.

Labor groups applauded the move.

The impact is "huge," Christine Owens, executive director of the National Employment Law Project said in a statement, pointing to an analysis of an earlier proposal that found raising the rate to $15.25 by 2019 would benefit more than 600,000 workers, or more than 40 percent of the city's workforce.

Probably just 20%.

They'll find that they can automate 10% of the work cheaper... the remaining 20% will just be expected to work harder to cover for the 10% shortfall. Overall this will be a big win for businesses... :) Not that often you can bump productivity 20%.

that should go over well.... "25% of you are going to lose your jobs to machines, 25% will lose your jobs to colleagues more efficient than yourselves, and the rest of you will quickly learn to hate your ever-increasingly difficult jobs"...

actually I have made close to that same speech before and it did end up working out pretty well for management... we got bonuses... but I left that part out of the speech...

It's all in how you phrase it.

All the poor schmucks that worked their way up from minimum wage jobs will see a drop in their buying power, brilliant LA.

I thought 40% were illegal immigrants that got paid under the table anyway. I don't see any real effects here.

No, they get to keep their jobs.
$1.50/hr under the table remains $1.50/hr under the table. Don't worry, avocado prices won't go up.
