Nobel Prize-winning scientist says Obama is ‘dead wrong’ on global warming

The Daily Caller

In 2008, Dr. Ivar Giaever joined over 70 Nobel Science Laureates in endorsing Barack Obama for president, but seven years later the Nobel Prize winner now stands against the president on global warming.

“I would say that basically global warming is a non-problem,” Giaever, who won the Nobel for physics in 1973, told an audience at the Lindau Nobel Laureate meeting earlier this month.

Giaever ridiculed Obama for stating that “no challenge poses a greater threat to future generations than climate change.” The physicist called it a “ridiculous statement” and that Obama “gets bad advice” when it comes to global warming.

“I say this to Obama: Excuse me, Mr. President, but you’re wrong. Dead wrong,” Giaever said.

Giaever was a professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s School of Engineering and School of Science and received the Nobel Prize for physics for his work on quantum tunneling. Giaever said he was “horrified” about the science surrounding global warming when he conducted research on the subject in 2012.

Ironically, just four years earlier he signed a letter with more than 70 other Nobel winners saying the “country urgently needs a visionary leader” and that “Senator Barack Obama is such a leader, and we urge you to join us in supporting him.”

But by 2011, Giaever left the American Physical Society because it officially stated that “the evidence is incontrovertible … [g]lobal warming is occurring.” The Society also pushed for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“Global warming really has become a new religion,” Giaever said. “Because you cannot discuss it. It’s not proper. It is like the Catholic Church.”

Giaever argued that there’s been no global warming for the last 17 years or so (based on satellite records), weather hasn’t gotten more extreme and that global temperature has only slightly risen — and that’s based on data being “fiddled” with by scientists, he said.

“When you have a theory and the theory does not agree with the experiment then you have to cut out the theory. You were wrong with the theory,” Giaever said.

I've been reading about that. Interesting idea, but I am a life long cynic. Most conspiracies are exposed at some point; people find the task of keeping their mouth shut impossible.

Yeah, I heard that too.

Then I heard TW, Bandaid and some of their other friends circled up and blew him. Hearsay, of course...or was it heresy? Either way...

Global warming/Climate change is real, but the more I read the more I learn it is not as horrific as the environmentalists say.

It's 73 degrees in Riverside, CA... in July... when it's usually in the 90's!!! Oh the humanity!!

Wait... this is much better than 90's. I'll take a few more days of this, please.

I say the guy has a right to his opinion and should be heard. But really, it looks like his opinions doesn't agree with the overwhelming opinions of his peers.

And while I'll give him prospers for winning his smart guy badges, high energy physics is not climatology. And the article is from an entertainment publisher, not a news service. This is sensational, not a reporting of evidence.

I suppose the debate will never really end. Hell, I know people that think taking the lead out of gas was a govmut plot to rip us off.

I do agree that the source is certainly biased, but since it's not an "opinion" piece by the "nesw source" I'll defer on the source credibility issue. It's sad that we no longer have real news sources. I'm guessing none of the "mainstream" sources will print this since is counter to their biased reporting.

As far as him not being a climatologist, he's a well respected scientist nonetheless. As such, I'm reasonably sure he knows how to spot data manipulation which in of itself is absolutely not confined to read raw data.

For the record, anyone who doesn't believe that the climate changes is living in a small fishbowl. That being said, no matter what steps we take as humans will have some impact on the climate. However, I don't believe for a minute there is much we can do about it. With a world population of 7B plus no matter what measures we employ the rate of climate change is probably going to remain about the same.

Between Fox, NBC, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, etc.... I doubt you could muster enough truth from all them to make it to 8%. Neither MSNBC or Fox were ever creditable news sources. The rest have ceased to become news sources. All we have now is agenda based propaganda.

Or maybe the mainstream sources arn't reporting it because it's not very relevant. I mean it is just one guy against the crowd.

It worries me to hear the attitude that "there is not much we can do". Because that is a step towards "let's do nothing" or better still, sence we really can't fix it, let's ditch the catalytic converters and put the lead back in the gas - we can save a few bucks.

I believe there is much we can do about it over the long term and into our future.

CNN is 20 % true, I don't watch it, Fox or MSNBC. For news I watch CBS and for political commentary and comedy I watch the Daily Show. Republicans hate fact checkers because it points out all their lies.

Arguing about the voracity of TV news is like two old men, one a democrat, the other a republican, on the front porch arguing about who's party was more honest.

In either case, they are going to tell you lies to scare the hell ut of you and get you to do what they want.

Reminds me of a restaurant on Cape Cod that has sitting benches on either side of the porch. One is labelled republicans and the other democrats.

And the right wing lies more than the left wing.

It depends on your perspective, but since I don't 'own' any politicians I don't truest any of them, with but a handful of exceptions, they have long since sold their sole to old scratch.
