In the radio interview with the Louisiana newspaper editor that called out Obama he recalled a similar situation during the LBJ administration. The governor called LBJ who said he would send his best man. The governor said no, we need you here. LBJ showed up at a shelter with no electricity, shined a flashlight on his face and said he was their President and there to give them whatever help he could.
Even GWB did it standing with the rescue workers in the ruins of the World Trade Center.
I agree on the optics and politics of it. Its a double edged sword though. You do it and everyone says it was a photo op and the burden accompanying the visit made things worse. You don't and you get this. It doesn't matter which party.
Frankly the President could do nothing but travel to where there is disaster or tragedy if you want.
I land on go to the State, not necessarily "ground zero" and make your political promises etc.... at a minimum sit in the WH and talk to the nation. We've seen neither in my mind. I'm not big on having the traveling zoo complicate recovery efforts and to be honest I'm not big in to the I feel your pain or nice job brownie politics.
