There's an $80 cleaning fee in the total price already.

Still... $130 each for 2 nights isn't bad, really. That's $65 a night, and it comes with all the amenities of being home. Fridge, stove, pots, pans, dishes, silverware, cups... we can make fish tacos when we get back from fishing. fog

We'll stop by mecca before we leave to get Al... BevMo. We can get our favorite libations.

I've stayed places with no smoking policies indoors (understandable) and on the grounds. I've asked owners/managers if outdoors might be acceptable if I am respectful, clean up, make sure others are not in position to be offended by drifting smoke, etc. Always got a positive response.

it's just kind of like automatic words that spew out on documents, and quite often the humans really do get it.

Rest up, bitch.

Rental agreement excerpt: E. No Smoking. No smoking is permitted at the Property (including porches, decks or outdoor areas) at any time.

I'd be all for smoking outside if it was someone else's CC on file.

The wife and I took a nap. I'm good to go.

We need to think about what we are going to eat Saturday night. I'm assuming we'll have tacos Sunday.

Don't blame you. We won't fire up until after you pass out.

very excited for this trip... weather should be great... the boat ride out will probably be a bit chilly and the ride back a bit windy, but other than that it's looking like tshirt and board shorts weather out there...

Do you use a swivel macs?

Not usually. I'm not all that experienced fishing for rock fish, really. I've just been using rock cod rigs, and I tie them right to the braid.

I've been watching 'how to' videos, and I plan on grabbing some buck tail jigs and some soft plastics for lingcod. I have rock cod rigs for cut squid. I have frozen squid... should I bring it?

Edit: I need to grab a few heavier weights, too. Only have one 8 oz. Need a couple more 8's and some 10's.

You can bring the squid... they may or may not have any at the landing... I'll try and buy some squid and whole mackerel if i can find some...

I'd personally skip the bucktail jigs... 8+ oz jig heads for soft plastic swim baits are good but less consistent than 8+ oz jigs...

Rock cod rigs - like the farallon feathers - are perfect, but I'd go 10 to 16 oz on the weight to avoid tangling up... you can buy those at the landing usually too...

I asked about the swivels because I'm low and have a hard time finding the big ones around here... i use swivels but plenty of experienced guys don't... it's a preference thing... it is one more thing to go wrong been you and the fish and for that reason i never talk anyone in to using one... but i like them...

not sure if you've stumbled on any dan Hernandez videos... i love what he's done for fishing in southern California, love what he does for the kids... he's terrible at rock cod fishing... he uses some of the worst set ups I've seen...

Most of the SoCal charter boats provide bait in two forms: frozen squid, which they'll cut into half inch wide strips, and usually live fish, like sardines or anchovies. If someone catches a mackerel or sand dab they'll usually put it into the live bait tank. I've caught a couple of lings with live sand dabs, never with a mackerel. Some people have had luck using chunks of mackerel as bait...

...always game to watch others for different techniques and lures and gear...

I'll bring extra rods and reels and tackle for Ant to use (if he's not bringing some) so he doesn't have to spend any money to rent any gear...

I have plenty of 10, 12 and 16 oz weights MACS...

Gonna have to check my gear and re-tie some fresh topshot/flouro leader...

Thanks Al. I wasn't planning to. AA charges $35 per checked bag. Besides, I wouldn't want to trust them with rods & reels.

Me, too... and as I said, I have 4 rods/reels for ocean fishing. Bringing all 4, so we'll be set.

I heard sand dabs are like candy to a lingcod... gonna see if I can find a lure that looks like one.

Well my trip to Bass Pro was a bust. Hoping I'll have better luck at BevMo or whatever it's called.

Two days and a wake up until the Cajun invades SoCal.

Yep, besides who said they have to be pictures of fish we caught. Hell, I know someone who has a cousin that dating a person whose BIL is married to a gal whose co-worker is cheating with the spouse of a relative of the father of a kid in love with a teenager that is proficient with Photoshop.

Charter doesn't include rod and tackle?!!

Weird. Ours out of Brookings all do.....and they do let you bring your own if so inclined. Those are some hefty weights, I think the bigger jig heads here are 3 ounces.

I hear there are lots of girlie boys in Oregon. No wonder the weights top out at 3 ozs.

The charter I went on in Florida included tackle and fish cleaning. $85

In San Diego a 12 hour charter is $145 and does not include tackle OR fish cleaning. And the fishing is better in Florida.

never have seen free gear on the rock cod trips... not unusual to use a pound of lead and not unusual to leave 3 or 4 at the bottom of the ocean... so that cost could be part of it... not sure, but if I had to guess, california taxes and fuel costs probably play a part too...

cost of the trip pays for the fuel, the slip cost, and the marina fees, and puts something in the captains pocket... deckhands make all their money off selling beer, food, tackle, and cleaning fish...

It's a 3 hour boat ride to our fishing grounds... weather report says when we start fishing at 9 o'clock, 75 degrees and 3 foot waves... I'm being a bit cocky, but I've got a feeling we'll be limited out by 1, back in port by 4...

Fish tacos!

Do we want to try this for Sunday evening? If so, I'll prep a couple of salsa's, shred some cabbage, cut some lemons, and pick up some flour tortillas... I'd rather do all that work Saturday before i leave than try to do it after fishing...

You read my mind... i was writing my post while you posted this I guess....

I don't drink, so no worries in terms of having someone upright... the bigger challenge will be exhaustion... I've taken several guys out on these trips and most guys are too exhausted to finish the day, let alone make a fish taco dinner once back on land...
