I am somewhat new to the wonderful pastime of enjoying a fine cigar, and I have come here looking for some advice. What I would like is some suggestions of decent cigars to try that encompass a large spectrum of tastes and relative strengths. If any of you fine people would be willing to give me a list of five or so cigars that range from mild to "Knock you on your ass" I would greatly appreciate it.

I will give you my five picks and a price range per box (these are in no particular order):
1)Cohiba Lonsdale Grande with Cameroon wrapper-medium taste with a few flavors for the palate $187 per box
2)Perdomo La Tradicion Cabinet Series with Rosado wrapper-medium to light strong with hints of choclate and nuts $160 per box
3)Mayorga Gordita with Natural wrapper-medium with a few flavors that compliment each other $45 per box
4)CAO Gold Label with Natural wrapper-mild with a creamy taste and hint of nuts $85 per box
5)Romeo y Julieta Vintage #5 with Natural wrapper-mild with a soft woody taste with hint of roasted almonds $225 per box
I have many others I enjoy too, but these are a few that stick out. I have a choice of value cigars you might say also I enjoy if you would like that list.

one of my first cigars and still in the top three of my favorites are Puros Indios, these can be enjoyed by anyone, a flavor that is easy to enjoy, without having to sit there and analyze what flavors one is experiencing, they can be aged or most often smoked right out of the box, and inexpensive.

Thanks for the info. I have tried the Mayorga (Robusto),and I too thought is was wonderful - not to mention a great price. Your list pretty much has cigars I have been considering to buy. Seeing as how I only have about one cigar a day it may take me a while to get through them, but I look forward to it. Thanks.

Medium Smokes: Hoyo De Monterrey Excalibur (Preferably the Epicure or #2)-an exceptional smoke, lots of flavor..feels like a million bucks when smoking one..Very satisfying with a long finish...Don Tomas Rothchild Both maduro and natural wrappers)-A good everyday consistently good smoke..some spiciness..Stay away from the Don Tomas Special Editions (S.E.)..Yuck..and of course the La Tradicions and Perdomo lines as Mtsheron said..You can't go wrong..As far as full-flavored cigars, I'd recommend Bahias (any line, but the Gold line is exceptional), Henry Clay Toros & Brevas (Maduro wrapper), but not the Habana2000 wrapper..Lots of flavor and spiciness, a long finish..Looks like something that Clint Eastwood would be smoking in a spaghetti western..Re: the Habana2000 wrappers on the Hanks, no real flavor to them (IMHO of course), and CAO L'Aniversaire (especially the Maduro lines).

Grayne, I am a relative newbie to the cigar smoking experience. It was a little over a year ago that I jumped on board. I am now "hooked". Being new to the sport, I did not want to spend all my savings to enter the game. I still have a beer budget with champaign tates. A few reasonably priced lines that I can recommend are: 5 Vegas, Mayorga, Puros Indios, La Aurora, and Padron. I try to stay under 3 bucks a stick since I smoke so darned many. My lasted find is the Maria Mancini Magic Mountain. (not really a find, because Smoke and CA gave it high marks) You will want to leave 'em in the humidor a little while, but boy is it worth it. Happy herfin' !!

Been smoking cigars over the past 4 years, past 1.5 years more intensely. Before finding Cigar International and Cigarbid, I was purchasing cigars at the local tobacco shops without expert advice or direction. The following list reflects that experimentation and trial/error processing:

Hoyo de Monterrey Excaliburs(Medium flavor)
Romeo y Julieta Cetro #1(Medium flavor)
Dunhill Domincan Valverde (Mild to Medium)
Henry Clay Breva (Medium)
La Luna LHB (Little Havana Blend) Robusto's (Medium) good value!
Punch Chateau M (Medium)
Partagas Almirante (Medium - Full)
Hoya Yellow Band (Medium - Full)

Avoid IMHO:
Don Tomas
Hoja de Nicaragua
Te-Amo
Victor Sinclairs
Double Happiness

LaLuna is an excellent cigar line. I have never had a bad LaLuna. The sister site to this one, CigarsInternational.com, has a special on bundles of LaLuna. It's THE cigar buy of the year.
The LL Maduro Fuerte line is a lot stronger and an awesome cigar.
The LL 1996 Reserva "R" is my all time favorite cigar.

Miyares cigars are an excellent medium bodied smoke. They have some here for auction every once in a while.

Henry Clay tastes pretty darn good to me.

Punch Rothschild double maduros are excellent smokes. Short cigars but firmly packed and tasty.

The La Aurora cigars that I've smoked have been very good.

Happy herfin'.

I'll have to ditto on BigBubba's avoid list: Don Tomas, Hoja de Nicaragua and Te-Amo, I'll also add Aroma de San Andres, and any Thompson Catalog brand bundles.

Since you're new (welcome Grayne) and probably want to start out inexpensive, try out the La Luna Little Havana Blend cigars ($19 for a bundle of Robustos on Cigars International), Cinco (or 5) Vegas, Indian Tabac, Puros Indios, and La Flor Dominicana (although these have gone up in price lately). I'd suggest the Romeo y Julieta Cedro Deluxe No. 5 (one of my favorites) and the La Flor Dominicana El Jocko #2 Perfecto (my father's favorite, he just started out as well). I hope this was helpful. Happy herfing :)

I would also like to recommend the La Luna LHB as a bargain and a nice smoke. I would also recommend the Miyares, Cinco Vegas and Mayorga. I have also enjoyed Fat Cat cigars with some age on them. For someone experimenting with different cigars I would recommend bidding on some five-packs, an excellent way to try some new smokes.

WOW...I'm really suprised at the amount of suggestions that I have received. I am rather pleased at the responses I have received because with all of the input I am able to put together a list of cigars that seem to keep popping up on peoples "favorites" lists. I know that different people have different tastes, but by picking the names that keep popping up I am pretty sure that I will be trying the best of the best.
So here is a list I have come up with: 1) Romeo y Julieta. 2) Perdomo. 3) Mayorga. 4) Puros Indos. 5) Henry Clay. 6) Partagas. 7) 5 Vegas..What I have found very interesting about this list is that the so-called premium "cream of the crop" cigars such as Davidoff and Montecristo seem to be absent. Although some on the list I have compiled are not by any means cheap, it shows that the most expensive is not always the best. Thanks for all of your inputs. I am always looking for more suggestions.

You mentioned 2 very tasty yet MILD MILD MILD cigars that were absent. Sure, they are good...but not at all worth the money they command. You forgot to add La Luna to your SHOULD BUY list.

Yeah, what Timinator said.

If you buy some LaLunas and decide you don't like them, you will have no problem trading them away. I bought 10 bundles at $19.95 but I could use some more.

DrMaddVibe (DMV) may be the longest tenured member still actively posting, or HockeyDad...maybe tailgater...but tail seems to have found some other toy...

I'd venture to guess that neither of them has any recollection of the guys who posted in this thread...maybe hegemonic...I think he still lurks

MadJorge, Jake, Toker all had good information for me. I wasn’t looking for a reply from the original poster / participants. I guess I could say that I was looking for input from you guys who are posting regularly on this board. Generally I find that you guys are quite willing to share your experience and give me tips. That’s really what I’m after.

That was clear to me. Just remember Jeebs taste is highly subjective. Cigar recommendations are kinda like movie recommendations. Ppl have widely varying tastes on movies too, so if you don't hear from several ppl something is good, or it's not really popular its extremely hit or miss. Even popular cigars (and movies) are hated by some. I've never smoked an Arturo Fuente cigar I liked out of 4 or 5 and most ppl love them. Not a huge fan of many other Dominican cigars either. Huge fan of corojos and Honduran cigars so Ill try anything with a corojo wrapper. Youre likely stuck with buying and trying cigars the same as we all once were or are now. Spend time finding what u like by researching every cigar you smoke. What region theyre from, what wrapper they have, then try cigars with those wrappers/from those regions that you liked. That may save you from trying cigars that you don't like.

Toker, Stogie, thanks a lot. I’ve got cigars running out of my ears, mostly fivers and ten packs. I’m keeping a journal - nothing fancy - of the cigars I smoke. I keep track of the wrapper, binder, filler and origin. I’m beginning to be able to differentiate wrappers on taste and appearance and steadily getting better, more accurate. I’m not too good at determining the origin of a cigar but it’s a heck of a lot of fun trying. I know that all of that will be more or less difficult based on the blend of tobacco. I do enjoy reading what you guys think. Sometimes I get a kick out of the spirited discussions re: Gurkha or RP. This forum has been a ton of fun and, as I’ve said, I do find it enjoyable. Thanks again. 😎

I'm not the oldest one here, but don't go by the dates you see now. CBid had a great server crash and had to start from scratch. I know I was using CBid back in 1999 to find my coveted Montecristo Le Cigare des Arts Royale Delacroix. This was the cigar that elevated everything for me and my tastebuds. Prior to having one of these it was mainly Flor de Oliva that I'd grab from the humidor in the clubhouse and go hit the links. When I couldn't find the cigar any longer in the Detroit metro area I used this thing called the "internet" that was in it's infancy and found they carried it. I was in luck, hardly anyone knew what it was and I stocked up like crazy. I'd buy them all. Once I found out it was a limited edition, I elevated my stop price but continued to hoard them. Didn't matter if it was the older wood grain box, or the polished burl wood or even the ceramic jars, I'd buy them. I found the forum on accident and was amazed at the wealth of information the users here held. The sharing of what and how to enjoy cigars became a thing to me and would become a passion that would ascend anyone into becoming a true BOTL. I didn't post for almost 6 months but just voraciously read the posts. Once I decided to post, it was akin to the Acapulco cliff divers...head first...off the cliff...waiting to hit the bottom, but realizing the water was fine. I had something to add by that time and was welcomed with open arms. Users like BMW (Barry, RIP!), Slimboli, Mounatin Jack, Rookie139, FBCoacho (my vet!), Charlie and a slew I'm forgetting off the top of my mind would PM me and we'd share the ol CBid "Fiver"! You have to understand nobody can count for $hit here at this site on the forums.

If ANYONE is looking for recommendations. Check on these links.

We used to pride ourselves on doing reviews here, but that's fallen off by the wayside. All I know is that there are very few n00bs that post here that have valid brands and cigars they share here that I would ever want to walk back down the mountain to smoke. Been there and done that. My initiation into climbing Mt. Olympia was carved first by the World of Single Malt Scotch. There wasn't a "Glen" anything I hadn't tried. When YOU get to the one that tickles you, you ask around. If you find there's a following you ask those with similar tastebuds where to go from there. As just like Cigars you can never be Icarus and fly too close to the sun to crash to Earth. You try...more than once...because Man had a hand in it and it could be a "bad" one. Once you climb the mountain you find that there are a lot of terrible cigars (most wrapped and oozing with snappy marketing!) that ruin what I call my Pinnacle of Relaxation. Sorry, Rocky makes a LOT of trash. The last decent cigar he made that made me buy a 2nd one was when he introduced his Ligero line. One would best served to understand that when we choose to enjoy a cigar its a highlight to a day where we celebrate the gift of Life, the loss of a loved one, a holiday where family is all together or those very rare concurrences where BOTL's gather called "Herfs" and hang out and smoke great cigars. Life is too damned short to smoke trash. I've met a slew of old crusty guys that smoke machine made drug store cigars and you're not going to sway them with a Padron '64! Fine. Great. Don't expect a gracious nod when you try to offer up a Backwoods flavored cigar though. Once you know...you know.

Just because a cigar costs a lot of money, it doesn't make it great. There are lines like Davidoff and AVO that just don't do it for me, but I've seen guys pop in to shpos and buy boxes of them and leave. So, cheap...expensive...limited editions and everyday cigars that have been made for decades...one will have to go their own journey. There's a lot here that will guide you. I've found experience is my best teacher, but I'm willing to listen.

I didn't buy more than 2 fivers of the Mayorgas - the Gordita torpedo was too short and the large torpedo was good for 3 and the other two were terrible. That was a long time ago just like this old topic. How did jeebling get to use Palama's time machine ?

Tony, I’m reading a lot of the old threads trying to learn something about cigar brands and what may have changed I like to hear what you guys have to say. Palama lets me time-share with the Time Machine. Also, some posts for me go straight to TLDR. Like cigars, I will simply skip the ones that hold no interest or value for me once I know what they’re about. Easy.

To explore Arturo Fuente you might try the following that order. Eat something before going for the last three.

AF Gran Reserva like the Cuban Corona or 858 NT, MD, RSG, or SG, I have and look forward to an 858 MD or Cuban Corona MD with coffee every morning.
AF MagR, the 44. The other sizes are too thick for me.
Ashton VSG, I like the Corona Gorda, Robusto, and Sorcerer if I have the time.
AF Don Carlos, The No 3 is excellent, so is the Robusto and Presidente if time allows.
AF Anejo No 46, 50, and 60, all fantastic.

Haha! I’ll keep that in mind PW. I’m now up and running on a site that sells a lot of AF and a lot of the other sticks that I see you guys talking about but aren’t offered on CB. I’ve got a lot of cigars to smoke that will probably be low quality but the silver lining, I guess, is that since I don’t have any cigars that have been resting for very long, at least I’ll have something to keep me busy. I appreciate the list here and I will push those to the top of my wish list on the small place. Thanks, Pops!
