Going beyond ridiculous to the absurd.

Kellogg's sorry for 'racist' cereal box
http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/41758608/kelloggs-sorry-for-racist-cereal-box

Cereal giant Kellogg's has apologised after it was accused of "teaching racism" on one of its cereal boxes.

It's after a complaint about the pictures on the front of the Corn Pops box which shows yellow characters having fun and a brown character scrubbing the floor.

Author Saladin Ahmed tweeted the company saying it is "teaching kids racism".

Saladin Ahmed is the writer of the Black Bolt series for Marvel Comics and author of the 2012 book Throne of the Crescent Moon.

He was outraged because the only brown Corn Pop on the box was depicted as a janitor.

A few hours after his tweet, the Kellogg's US Twitter account responded saying they were committed to diversity and inclusion.

Saladin later tweeted to say he "genuinely appreciated" the quick response from the company.

It's not the first time a big brand has come under fire for racism recently.

Just a week ago, moisturiser brand Nivea was criticised for an advert promising one of its products will lighten black skin.

And earlier this month Dove apologised after releasing a series of images that appeared to show a black woman turning white after using their soap.

15 years ago, I had a co-worker whose wife (a Vietnamese refugee) started a business in San Francisco catering to fellow Asian women ... the products she sold were skin lighteners ... her business was surprisingly successful and she said it was because Asian women all wanted to have lighter skin ... which is why they covered themselves when going out into the sun and sought products such as those she was providing them ...

My guess is that Nivea and Dove were quietly aiming at that market and that the uproar from blacks is yet more PC bullsh*t ...

My interpretation exactly. I lived in the Philippines for years and 'whitening soap' and other skin lightening products were extremely popular there as well.

That's not to say that there wasn't a 'racist aspect' to it all, though. But it didn't necessarily have to do with African heritage. There was, at least years ago, a pretty overt bias against the 'negritos', darker, smaller people from sort of the outskirts of the more populous areas. I wouldn't suggest there was a conscious effort to avoid looking like a negrito, but it was absolutely part of the subconscious desire for paler skin.

Hate to be devil's advocate here, but that box was pretty fkin racist, lmfao.

Sup brownie, you missed a spot... You don't see it, but a few frames later, poor brownie does a face plant because those knuckleheads are playing jump rope with his cord.

On the other side, if you think about it, not only is it racist, it's pretty fkin funny too because of how in your face it is.

Ya, whoever let that get out should probably be fired, that's a PR nightmare this day in age.

On a final note, leave it to cacman to get all butt hurt over someone getting mad over a blatantly racist ad.

My guess is this image kinda resembles cacman's local Walmart in the mountains.

Appears that the Nivea ad was targeted to women in Africa that are actively seeking skin lightening products. Not saying that's better....they didn't necessarily create the mindset that led to demand, but they are profiting and perpetuating it, I suppose.

The Dove ad is more complicated....and stupid. Pretty clear to me that they knew it how it would be interpreted. In fact, it looks like they worked to build in an 'explanation' by adding a further transformation from white to brown...??? Pretty bizarre....and yes, stupid

Should be...they've certainly diversified the **** out of themselves...I was in the cereal aisle recently and there must have been 10 different Cheerios..of course they're all kept in their own boxes...not sure what that's all about

Well, the Fruit Loops fit in to each other and the Frosted Flakes are using whitening products to try and upgrade their social status.

Been eating Corn Pops since I was a kid. Also watched Looney Tunes, and did my history and math homework too without talking back to a teacher. Never knew until this week that all of this was wrong and offended somebody. Go figure.

Now where did I put that Aunt Jemima's maple syrup for my pancakes.

Hypersensitive, hypocritical, douchenozzles (ya that includes you too princess Vicki).

Mammy!
Always liked the crows from the movie "Dumbo" too.

Princess Vicki is wrong with his assumptions, attacks, and stereotypes… again. But it's all he knows how to do is attack, so it's nothing new.

Only had one manic-depressive parent who shipped me off to be raised in State institutions until I was 18. Never experienced racism until I moved to a poor, black neighborhood. Then it was against me because I was "white" and had some sort of "privilege" growing up. Go figure.

Only princess Vicki would bring a person's parents into his attacks. What's next, is princess Vicki going to resort to saying something bad about my mother too?

Once again princess Vicki shows us he truly is an ignorant POS… again.

Have a great day, and pass the Aunt Jemima's. A fresh batch of pancakes just came off the griddle. I'm out of Corn Pops.

Dude... i hate to break it to you but mentioning the existence of "parents" while mocking you isn't "bringing a person's parents into ...attacks". If you weren't so very very stupid you would see that.

Typical for princess Vicki to keep using a snippet/joke from a conversation to justify his attacks while ignoring the rest of the discussion. But that wouldn't justify his attacks to make his empty life seem worth living. What ever makes princess Vicki feel better about himself. It must be tiring for princess Vicki to go through life with so much hate, attacking and cursing at anyone he disagrees with.

Here's some advice for princess Vicki. Why don't you take a few of those pills you're so happy to push on everyone else. Might make you feel better.

Battle is closer than I expected it to be.

cacman is on the defensive, victor appears to be pulling his punches a bit, but is still scoring.

If this were a 12 round fight I would have it 4 to 2 for victor at this point.

If cacman didn't have Aunt Jemima in his corner, I would have it as a clean sweep... but who don't like Aunt Jemima?

"snippet/joke".... yeah. That's why you initially defended it as "blacks were mean to me! so I'm gonna be racist!" You never treated it as a joke until you realized it was going to keep being brought up and associated with you. That makes you not only racist, but also a coward. I liked you better when you at least admitted openly to it. (not that I think you care whether I like you better or worse than any other racists I dislike)

But there you go again, playing the victim... with your "attacking... anyone he disagrees with"... Do you feel attacked? Bullied? Are you upset that I'm not black so you can't just blame it on those mean blacks being racist and climb up the back of your couch to feel safe?

.... I'm pretty sure no one in this thread has said blacks can't be prejudiced against anyone...

You've just decided to jump to that conclusion because it makes you feel better by putting some absurdity in other people's mouths....

A person with a rudimentary grasp of logic would understand that identifying you as racist is in no way associated with whether or not any individual or person can or cannot be racist.

Dude... YOU of all people start a thread stating how ridiculous it could possibly be that anyone thinks a cereal box illustration is racist.

You do see how this could be construed as hilarious, and how something like that may possibly cause someone to bring up your personal record on racism?

While we're at it, maybe we should ask a bank robber's opinion on security systems....

If you don't want your racism to come up, stop posting threads whining about how the blacks keep thinking everything you think is great is racist.

if i may state a Minority Shareholder's opinion...

yeah, I love the entertainment value. But every time this stuff happens, I realize I am saddened a bit.

I participate in (a little) yet dislike the use of feminizing males so as to insult them. I have a mother, wife, daughters, granddaughter, and female peers of superior intellect and character. Feminizing males so as to insult them should be history by now. I know it isn't, and admit to participating in this insulting ritual, but I hope this is history for the next generation.

Same as gay insults, racial insults, religious/atheist insults, insults I haven't figured out yet...

I still plan to laugh at clever usage, but it is getting stale.

And cut me some slack, I'm kinda sensitive lately.
