a pal gave me a montequilla robusto. when i first lit it up it was great. very smooth, wonderful draw. towards the end though it got kinda skanky. not knowing anything about these smokes, is this typical?

define skanky, a term usually refereed to a woman of low esteem.
did you smoke fast?
at which point did it start turning bad (how much left).

you know how a room smells when you've left a cigar butt in there overnight? that's what it tasted like. it started when about 2/3 were smoked.

It ain't uncommon for a cigar to get nasty in the last third, especially the ones like Rick smokes. The solution is to treat them like they're women, dump them the minute they become unpleasant.

Try not to over fire your smoke. Puffing too hard or too fast will give the cigar a strong burnt taste.

Also if you are a wet smoker, when the end gets too wet it changes the taste of the gar.

Personaly I like the smell of the room after I've smoked in it.

It's also luck of the draw. Different sticks same brand can be different as well as some "complex" cigars.

Hey, if you smoke something you don't like, don't buy them again. Fahgedaboudit an move on!

Bayou - try "purging" your cigar, a trick I learned here. If your cigar turns bitter, put a good flame at the end and blow through the cigar. You'll get quite a flame coming out of the end as impurities burn off. The cigar should now have a "cleaner" flavor. Also, if your cigar tends to get wet, try clipping a little off. Last, always let your cigar rest a moment after a few puffs or it will burn hot - don't rush it.

I smoke indoors only in my home office and in no other room ... I emptied the cigarbutts out of the ashtray because garbage collection is Monday and I take out all the trash on Sunday evening but more importantly because the ashtray was full ... I have no idea how the room would smell if I left "A" butt in the ashtray overnight ...

i love the smell of my room after i smoke. but i find that if i leave butts in there overnight, the room smells really stale and kinda sour. i realize it's probably just personal preference.

It's all good advise on how to smoke em, how to relight em etc. but the fact is those Mantiquella's burn harsh and hot, especially toward the end, at least the ones I got do. I'm hoping that a little humidor time will help. I put them to rest on Oct 10 and tried one over the weekend. They were much improved but still got hot toward the end. I was using the puff a minute theory too. Give them some time and hope for the best.
