I would say it all depends on the distance you are shooting and skill maybe. If say 100 yds and your scope is set to 100 then spotting scope. If shooting longer range then exact range is needed to calculate MOA adjustments. I love figuring for exact change in yardage so as to able to aim dead on. None of that "Oh its 300 yards and I got to hold what looks to be 1.3 inches high crap". I do not like using SWAG in my adjustments other than for windage. Take a range reading, calculate, make click changes, aim dead on and pull the trigger. Just my OP. Now since you have been a good Jakazz this year, both would come in very handy.

Your opinion is the only one that matters brother, and you are quite welcome.

I hunt some pretty open country in West Texas, mainly the Panhandle area.Since some shots may be on the long side I carry 10X50 Nikon Binoculars and a Nikon Aculon rangefinder(6X20),good out to 500 yards or so.I don't like shots over 300-350 and if possible I'll try to get inside 250.I've never seen the need for a spotting scope but it would all depend on the terrain you hunt.If I elk hunted the west.......maybe I could see the need,I suppose if I had an extra $500-1000 I'd probably have one for the hell of it.

+1 on getting both........I like hunting toys

Man, I always loved the old Mil-Surplus stores. The first deer I dropped out at 800 plus yards was using a 1k range finder and an old Russian sniper scope I picked up for 20 bucks at a surplus shop. Hit her right square in the chest blew her heart out and cut her for a back flip. Dead on the spot! I do not like tracking em as well so that was the reason I carried a range finder to figure dead on shot at any range in the field. Granted that scope had to be shimmed so it did not bottom out and could be used for that kind of distance. The only time I had missed was the one time I did not realize that the inertia from the kick of my rifle broke my front scope mount during a practice session. Lucky for me, out past 500 or 600 yards you could not hear the report of my rifle so it did not spook off the deer. My hunting buddy was able to take the second shot and get it since my Rifle was out of commission. Sigh, I miss shooting so damn much its pathetic. Ah well, such as life I guess.
