I just started A SHORT HISTORY OF THE WORLD. I'm trying to fill the gaps in my knowledge of history.

To be honest I rarely will read a book. I read very many magazine articles.
I guess I have a short attention span when it comes to reading.
I read: Cigar Aficianado, Mens Health,Sports Illustrated,The San Jose Mercury News & Best of all the interesting posts on this website!!

Just finished "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Bourdain. This guy can write. Just before that, "A Cook's Tour: In Search of the Perfect Meal" by the same outlaw-chef-turned-author. Both highly recommended if you are a foodie or wannabe chef.

Barry,

I have tried that source. I think it created more gaps than it filled. It's good to be the king.

I read this forum.
Tom Clancy
James Bond novels
assorted newspapers
CA mag
Popular Science
National Geographic

My wife reads about 2 novels a week. Sometimes 2-3 simultaneously. I've been on the same Tom Clancy book for 3 months.

I've been a reader all my life ... but nothing special at the moment ... Rayder1, which of Clancy's novels are you taking 3 months with ?? I found them engrossing enough to be impossible to put down and read each in a fairly short time ... I will admit though, that the 1.5 hours I spend on the commute train each day is sure a golden opportunity to read and might have an advantage over you in that regard.

Recently finished PHINEAS REDUX by Anthony Trollope, which is a great look into English politics during the Victorian era. I'm now beginning THE SILVER THORN by Hugh Walpole, my favorite author. This is a sequel to his novel THE DARK FOREST, and both take place in Russia during its war with Austria during the mid 1910s. Hugh Walpole is a wonderful author whose works, sadly, are for the most part not in print anymore. I recommend anything you can find--there's a lot of his novels available cheap on eBay. If you can find a copy of FORTITUDE, buy it! One of my favorite novels of all time. Most of Walpole's writings are set in historic England.

I mentioned it once before in an unrelated psot, so I'll use this opportunity to mention it again. If you haven't done so yet, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK:

"A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn.

We get some spirited and well informed social and political debate on these boards, and I think you would find this book very interesting, informative, and eye-opening.

If anyone has already read it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it...

Jeffersonn, I tried reading the Zinn book a few years back. I gave up in depression. I'm all for setting the record straight and getting rid of historical myths, but this book seemed like more of an Anti-American diatribe. Maybe I'll try it again.
