This one is a bit long, but to me, really hits so much of what made Monty Python so brilliant. They had just no sacred cows. I mentioned this elsewhere, but if you're a Python fan, I highly recommend John Cleese's autobiography "So Anyway...." and that of Eric Idle, something with incredibly long title which I've loaned out to a friend. Both are so much a reflection of their authors, and both had me laughing out loud many times.

Anyway, people know the Spanish Inquisition bit, The Lumberjack Song, the Dead Parrot Sketch, etc. To me, this sketch from the archives shows just how ballsy these guys were. WW II wasn't that far in the Brits' rear view mirror, but they just ran right into this one head-on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mai5yNgRhhQ

Mind-blowing absurdity. And had to be controversial at the time. Love the scene where hitler rides by the Axis cafe shouting through his bullhorn. Hilariously crazy.

First introduced to them when I was bed-ridden with the measles as I was younger. Was watching late-night TV on the local PBS station, when the show came on. I had no idea what it was, so thought that it might be a serious show. But as I paid more attention, it just became more and more ridiculous. And insane. Just eviscerating every societal construct and norm. I was hooked!

Truly pioneering humor for the time. And stands the test of time.

I love the Pythons. Early 70's, I've found BBC humor on PBS. Monty Python, The Goodies, Dr. Who (I know but hey) etc. It's a 10-1030 pm time slot. I'm up on Saturday waiting for Monty Python to start. My Dad comes down for a "bonding" hang out moment. Python opens with a Revolutionary war scene, Dad says "This looks good", and about then the Redcoats run past John Cleese in a suit and bowler deadpanning "Now for something totally different." Roll intro.

He sat there for a moment, got up, said "Well, good night.", went to bed and that was that. LOL.

That pretty much set the tone. Great great comedy.

Yeah, in the 70's Python was on PBS at 7pm on Wednesdays....I'd go out and be back home with my brain cells properly aligned, and tune in to channel 11, my father would usually be in his spot on the couch, and all through the show he'd be bitching about how stupid it was, "what the hell are they all running around in women's clothes for??", and his favorite, This isn't funny, it's sick...these people must be insane"...he used to make me laugh my ass off.....For years, he'd call me, on the phone, out of the blue, and say "I have a pimple on my bum!!"(in his best village idiot voice), and then be gone, hung up on me....

LOL. My brothers and I all love Monty Python. Even my older brother, who is quite the nerd, still quotes the occasional line. It's lost on my father, but dude is damned near 87, so he wasn't really part of the MP target audience.

I'd like to think the guys dressed as women was a holdover of Shakespeare's day, when most roles were filled by men. However, it was probably for comedic effect and even more so to save money. There's a reason one guy might play 4-5 different characters in the same movie. IIRC, the clapping coconuts for galloping horses in Holy Grail was due largely to the fact they didn't have the budget for actual horses. Think it might have been Palin who came up with the coconuts.

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but it can be a pretty good accomplice to comedy.
