According to researchers at the University of California's Irvine Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND), the secret to living an ultra-long and prosperous life, a.k.a. making it past your 90th birthday, is actually quite surprising.

The secret? Being overweight in your 70s, and drinking both alcohol and coffee...in moderate amounts.

The researchers explained: “People who drank moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who abstained,” and that “people who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than normal or underweight people did.”

Interesting…this is great news for everyone who loves their morning a cup of joe and a nice cocktail every day, but I’m also just a little bit skeptical.

Anyways, here’s how the study was conducted: Starting in 2003, researchers began a project called The 90+ Study, where they studied 1,600 old people over the age of 90 to determine what it is that makes them live so long.

"Because little is known about people who achieve this milestone, the remarkable increase in the number of oldest-old presents a public health priority to promote the quality as well as the quantity of life."

In layman’s terms, more and more people are living to see their 90th (and beyond) birthday, and no one knows where this increase in longevity is coming from.

To figure it out, the researchers had the participants perform neurological, neuropsychological, cognitive, and physical tests every six months, and also gathered information on their diet, daily activities, medical history, and medications.

Analysis of the data found that the those who drank moderate amounts of coffee and alcohol lived longer than those who didn't drink, and those who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than normal or underweight people.

Plus, America’s oldest veteran, 112-year-old Richard Overton, says he drinks a strong cup of coffee with cream, sugar, and a shot of whiskey every morning, so that should tell you something.

With that said, let's all take this information with a grain of salt, preferably chased with a tequila shot. You know, for the sake of a long life.

old skinny people are as good as gone if they become ill...even if it's an upper respiratory infection or something else not normally fatal.
Lose a few pounds, get too weak...taps time.

You have to be able to know how many drinks you had the night before. By the way who is this Sam Hill you talk of ?

Hell at 5'10" and 220+ I'm classified as obese. Trying to get down to 185 at this point, where I will only be classified as overweight, then I'll start the coffee and alcohol regiment. Looking forward to the day.

Meh. I don't see much connection between long life and being "prosperous". I see old people all the time with what appears to be very poor quality of life just hanging on. Guess I spent too much time around my MIL assisted living home before she passed.

I'm not concerned with how long I live as much as how I'm able to enjoy the years I have.

Just remember that you're probably not going to reach your seventies if you really overweight and don't move around much.

FWIW, fingers crossed, I'm turning 70 in the first few days of November. Anxious

Jim Fixx, the guy credited with creating the jogging craze, died in his early 50's.
Looked like he weighed 74 pounds at his peak.

I'm thinking if people have an EXTRA 74 pounds to lose when ill, they would hang in long enough to beat it.

63 but I walk regularly. Overweight but losing. Parents died under the age of seventy. I have CHF. 70 not a good bet for me. (I did quit cigars about 3 months ago, just enjoy the company here)

got two out of three...had to cut way back on alcohol because of its sugar/carb content to control diabetes...2 cups of coffee everyday...at 190lbs I'm 30 lbs over "healthy adult weight" for 5'8" ... I walk 5-7 miles nearly every day...

maybe I should increase alcohol if I make it to 70 in 4 years...

why didn't they ask the participants if they smoked cigars?

At 45 I'm probably 35lbs overweight. (220 at 6'1"), or at least I know I'm 35lbs heavier than when I was in shape.
I still exercise 5 days a week, 4 days a week are HIIT training, 1 day I swim 1.5-2 miles. Resting HR is 52.

None of that really matters. Genetics will control most of it.

Gee Victor, you are overweight, I'm 59, 6'4" tall 205 lb, and dropping weight. I walk about 6 miles a day at work, and work out 2 hours a day. Though I do follow the article already, 1 good cup of coffee a day, and a glass of red wine or an oz of whiskey.

Seriously folks, whatever weight you want to be is best for you.

No carbs in whiskey, vodka or tequila unless you're buying flavored stuff.
