Fake Cohiba Finding

So I just got a box of Cohiba Robustos from a friend who came back from Cuba (person is originally from there), and I am 100% sure they are fake. The box looks great as do the seals, but the labels on the cigars are clearly fakes (no holograms) and the quality is instantly recognizable as subpar. And of course they don't smell right. Haven't cut any up yet. I can post pics if anyone is interested.

What interested me about this though is that when I plug the label serial # into habanos.com - it actually comes back as authentic, but for Partagas Shorts - not Cohiba Robustos, which is what the box says. Has anyone else encountered this? Seems like an interesting scam to swap the serial numbers.

Gotta say, I’ve not heard of that one, but my experience on this topic is minimal.

I am no expert but from the googling I have done on the subject you are just as likely to get fake cubans in cuba as you are in mexico. Just don't buy cuban cohibas because they are literally the most expensive brand and it's not worth paying $25+ per cigar on fakes. There is a certain site that starts with monte and I hear people have good fortune with them for real cubans if you must have a cuban.

Of course they aren't real Cohibas. Even in Cuba, Cohibas are only a few dollars less than they are anywhere else.

Cigar factory workers steal boxes, bands, and tobacco and roll fakies at home to sell to suckas like your friend.

Go ahead and smoke one. It's a real Cuban cigar, just not a real Cohiba.

Article I saw a few years ago said the seals, bands, etc for most any marca could be purchased on line if you looked. Don't know if that included the bands with holograms which were instituted later.

Oh I get it yes, my activity has not been there. My bad. Good thing is I've only gained a nominal amount of weight since my last post.

With that said, thanks for all the other responses. I knew these were fakes from the start, and my friend thankfully didn't really get duped. Somehow got these and said there's a chance they're legit so try them. I just found it interesting that the label is actually legit, and can be verified on the site, just for the wrong type of cigar. That means they got the real labels from the factory and slapped on different boxes - I hadn't heard of that type of faking before.

14 & 15 are right but I would definitely cut one up and inspect, Ive seen some nasty stuff in fakes.

There is a place in Cozumel calling itself a casa del habano but it's not showing up on the official site so I am wondering if I should even bother with that place. (I will be on a cruise that will port there in early February). Amusingly enough it is a company cruise and my boss is coming out of Canada so if I really wanted real cubans I would probably be safer just having him bring me some when he flies down to Florida in Feb but I am still curious about that one casa in Cozumel.

No more insane than Mexican import taxes I would imagine. It seems like everything in the Americas is taxed to holy hell where it is legally sold.
