Anyone have experience in the fermentation of tobacco leaves at home?

I just bought some tobacco seeds and am going to grow some for fun. If I am lucky it might even be smokable! I’ve been doing some research online but would love to chat with anyone who has grown, cured and fermented their own tobacco. I am in Oregon, not known for its tobacco growing but I am excited to try it out as an experiment.

I've got several strains of tobacco that I've meant to grow for several years but never got around to it...

Unlike nearly all other seeds, you start tobacco seeds on top of the soil as they need sunlight to germinate... That's all I know...

Mom used to live behind an Amish tobacco farm in Ephrata PA . Acres of PA broadleaf leaf in all directions. pulled a few ligero aged for a few months and rolled cheroots. Surprisingly Not terrible. I remember the ammonia smell in the process and to this day it puts me off certain stix. (Casa Turrent) Wish she still lived there as I would love to try my blending / aging skills with today's knowledge and patience. My nephew used to roll canabis into giant blunts with the bottom leaf

That’s awesome Dg. I think the process of growing, curing, fermenting and rolling tobacco will only give me a greater appreciation for how people turn leaves into a perfectly balanced and enjoyable cigar.

Clint: I’ve bought cigars for a long while on here but never even looked at the forums until recently.

When I was young, I wold go and watch the older men that mad their own chewing tobacco. They would have either wooden barrels or burlap sacks and pack them full, then keep them in a spot that would stay hot, above 90 degrees and around 65-68% humidity. For small amounts, you need a kiln and I have a link that explains. I had zero luck with trying to get a small rubbermaid container to work when I tried a few years ago. Best of luck. Avoid getting the humidity at 70%, it will mold.

You will need to answer some questions. Frank has been worried sick about you.
