Depends on what you’re using it for, chrome books are cheap if you’re not running a bunch of software or gaming.

Are you planning on using it in one location or mobile? Laptops are just as good in most cases👍
Ray don’t forget you need internet for either🤪

I’m no brainiac, and I don’t play one on TV, but my last 2 desktops have been laptops. With 526 gigs and a terabyte, that’s plenty for me.

Desktops are my choice, but laptops are a lot easier to move around or take with you on a trip. Unless you are planning on storing tons of stuff on your hard drive 1/2 a TB should be easily sufficient. Do some research on processors- Intel's I-5 is good their I-7 is better.

which is more important to you?

screen size and picture quality...desktop PC monitors start at 20" and go much larger with HD, whereas laptops max out at 17" screen, and those are heavy

portability...PC is anchored...laptop can go anywhere as long as you're connected

Get one with an HDMI connection, use your big screen TV as the monitor. Add a wireless keyboard and mouse then you'll never have to get out of the Lazy Boy.

I’m about to drop $1,800 replacing the MacBook my daughter decided to douse with some liquid.

My take is dollar for dolla you will almost always get more from a desk top than you will a lap top if you don’t care about portability.

Literally more of everything especially graphics and cpu assuming same price. Maybe I’m wrong though haven’t looked for a long time other than apple.

For me I want mobile, need to recover an apple hard drive.... thus $1,800.

Delta - I think they make a 19" screen laptop and I know they made 19" monitors - I have two floating around somewhere (and they were upgrades in monitor size). I now only use 23"monitors.

What do you want installed? Software wise? Do you have a preference on Operating Systems (i.e. Windows, MAC OS, other)? And what is your intended use? fog

Not any good ones unless you find a Grade A refurbished one and it will still probably run you more than $750. Don't drink the MAC Kool Aid if you're only going to surf the web and not doing any kind of "artsy stuff". JM2C fog

The air starts at 999 and the 999 version is pretty decent for routine stuff.

I'm doing the 1799 pro because I want to do some video editing. I have volumes of recorded zoom material that I have to piece together for my documentary on how cigars drive IQ down and cause general stupidity.

I use mac and non mac. I prefer the mac but that's all it is and you do pay a premium. If I wanted to tinker or upgrade I'd never go that route. Due to my family we also are pretty invested in the apple ecosystem. The integration is pretty nice between TV, tablets, phones etc.

I just bought an older laptop off ebay for an elderly friend. She wanted a laptop just for things like email, web surfing, and ancestry stuff. Didn't need anything fancy and didn't want to spend a lot.

Dell Latitude E5540 Laptop
15.6" Screen (1920 x 1080 max res), HDMI and VGA connections for external monitors
Intel Core i5 4th Gen, 2.60 GHz
8 GB RAM
500 GB HD
Windows 10 Pro
Built in microphone, web cam, WiFi
Qty 3 USB ports, 1 SD card slot

$308 delivered.

I'll decrapifiy it (remove the bloatware) for her and install standard software like AVG, VLC, MS Office 2007, Firefox, Chrome, Team Viewer... Prolly put on Classic Shell too since she's used to the Win 7 interface. Not sure what she has for a printer but if she wants another set up I'll get an inexpensive WiFi ink jet one for her.

Forget the Microsoft office and go with Apache Open Office (It's a free download).

Yeah. Was thinking that. I looked at Open Office many years back but been installing Office 2007 Enterprise on machines because folks are more familiar with it and I came across a full version that is free to distribute with no serial required. I'm sure Open Office has come a long way and worth looking into again.

I have an old Dell Optiplex Tower that I rescued from the dumpster at a past job. Upped the RAM, added a video PCI card, put in a couple additional drives (1 and 2 TB) and connected to my home network to use as a media center/library for movies, music, TV episodes. Also had set it up as a local Minecraft server back when the kids were into that stuff. Recently installed Linux Mint on it as a dual boot with Win 7 so I can fart around with Linux when I get bored.

Dell is a solid brand once you move to their business machines, which the optiplex and latitude both are. Good advice here from buck.

My Dell Inspiron has been in for extended warranty repairs 3 times already. Same defect where the power jack damages the power port.

I've re-homed probably a dozen Dell Optiplex boxes of different form factors. A place where I worked back around 2011 or so upgraded most of their office computers by wiping the drives and tossing them out - the whole package - keyboards, mice, sometimes the monitors and everything.

I had a good rapport with the IT guy and told him that I would take them, clean them up, and pass them on to people that needed them. He said that he couldn't give them to me because company policy says that he has to dispose of them. After he placed one in the dumpster he informed me that he just "disposed" of another one. I brought home a bunch of them that summer and they all found new homes for no cost. I haven't heard back if anyone has had issues but the two I kept (both Optiplex 760) have been with not problems.

The Optiplex 760's are super easy to swap things in and out of. Easy access into the case and the components are readily accessible often with no need for any tools. Their like a Lego kit.
