modern phenomenon of many brands

If one reads old articles you see that certain celebrities smoked a certain cigar. EX: John Kennedy smoked H Upman. How many brands of cigars are you storing for personal consumption? I wonder if it is purely a modern phenomenon for a person to not settle on one cigar and limit their purchases to that brand or possibly one size of that brand. That would be one's everyday cigar. The cigar you always bought by the box. Perhaps the cigar you bought multiple boxes of so they can age. Certainly one may have a special occasion cigar that was appreciated but out of their price range. So if you had to pick a cigar for everyday smoking in your acceptable price range, what would it be? The next question is how many cigars that are not that particular cigar are you currently sitting on? Are you married to a cigar or still uncommitted and playing the field?

If I were to factor in an accurate budget, I'd probably take an Asylum 13 Ogre. If I were a man of elevated means, the Eiroa 20 Years Maduro. In reality, I'm a dirty dirty ho and have significant harem of long filled beauties

Ive pretty much settled on blenders, and primarily smoke stuff from
Padron
Litto Gomez
Steve Saka
Pete Johnson
DPG
Jon Huber

90% of what I smoke, comes from these ^^ guys.
The remaining is me trying new stuff, an occasional Fuente (WOAM) maybe an AJ cigar now and again

Hundreds of brands but really how many are unique other than the vitola? IE Rocky Patel. Many are the same cigar with a different band IMO.

I don't have a single cigar that's my goto.

I have cigars that are in the rotation (loosely calling it rotation, it's actually quite random).

There's ones I buy more often than others which aren't necessarily my favorite.

Like Oliva and AJ Fernandez, you can get them cheap, are pretty good, some of their wares are superb. Fills the niche for the ones you puff all the time and don't care if you have to throw it out.

You have to rotate though because you'll find a good deal, then the vendor will wizen up (coh with mag44 is a good example, used to be able to get them dirt cheep, now you can't).

On top of that, your preferences will change over time (it happens).

So I wouldn't get hard stuck on a particular brand/cigar/flavor, just focus and getting the smokes you know are a good fit for you.

I wouldn't put too much weight in any one else's opinion either just because they appear to have clout... focus more on finding people that interests that are similar to yours and put more weight into their opinions... don't get stuck on trying to match your palate to the "old guard's".

I am not implying that would defer to the choice of a celebrity. When I order a beer, i generally order my favorite if they have it. Because many places don't carry it, one has to have second, third and fourth choices. I still question why I have too many brands. Some are cheapies I took a chance on hoping they'd be a find or age into something better. I am still feeling inclined to move more and more toward one cigar blend and then hoping they don't change the blend for the sake of modernization. I used to love Partagas #10 back in the 90s but besides the prices going up I also hear the blend is not what it once was. There are just way too many blends for all to be noticeably different.

How many brands of cigars are you storing for personal consumption? Never really thought about it but I’m storing ALL of them for personal consumption. I don’t know if I’ll ever smoke all of them, time is not necessarily on my side for that long-range goal, but my INTENT is to consume as many as I can. However, I’ve already spoken to one of my nephews about the possibility of buying some of my inventory somewhere down the road. But fo’ sure I’ve never bought cigars with the intent of storing them for secondary market sales and asking exorbitant prices when the demand far exceeds the supply.

I think it’s a “modern phenomenon” partly because of the plethora of brands and variants out there as well as the ease of learning about and acquiring them. I mean, before CBid (BCA), people would go to their favorite tobacconist and buy from their limited inventory and that would be it. I’m no sociologist but I’m sure culturally, Americans have changed to the point where our “more is better” mantra has us hooked on acquiring more than we should, just to say “Hey, I’ve got that….”

So if you had to pick a cigar for everyday smoking in your acceptable price range, what would it be? I’d almost be bored spitless iffin’ I was “stuck” with only 1 cigar. And while this question has been posed numerous times and I may or may not have given an answer I think my answer for today would be the AF Mag R44. A year or 2 from now it might be a different cigar, who knows?

The next question is how many cigars that are not that particular cigar are you currently sitting on? Too many but that’s what makes this hobby so much fun!

Are you married to a cigar or still uncommitted and playing the field? Sure as hell ain’t “married” to one particular cigar but not exactly “playing the field” these days either. I’ll still buy something that seems highly rated / liked by reviewers or members of this board but I don’t actively search for something new.

Kennedy smoked the cuban H. Upman cigars. The ones you buy on here are not cuban. Same with montecristo, cohiba, punch ect. They pretty much just steal the names to sell cigars to unsuspecting buyers. In my opinion there are decent every day smokes in each of these infringement brands that you can pick up here for $2-4 a piece though.

I don't really have a go to brand. I smoke something different every day for a couple of weeks before maybe repeating one of my daily smokes like La Aurora ADN or a Nica Libre or something. I like variety, and I especially like small batches and short runs, one offs, things that are only here for a brief moment, then gone forever. Just like the moment itself. It's like the Buddhists' teachings about the impermanency of the universe and how everything changes all the time.

I think I can get a good 20 minutes out of it.

Pretty much the same for me.

I do have cigars in the Top 5 of my all-time favorites that I try to smoke on a semi-regular basis but with the myriad of other favorites and / or cigars recently purchased or gifted, it’s sometimes hard to squeeze them into the rotation.

bgz and Palama have pretty much described my current cigar smoking/purchasing phenomenon...

no daily special/fave...

it's a random selection, spur of the moment grab when I feel like a smoke...I keep a large variety on hand of cigars I've tried and liked and acquired more of...the number of different brands is unknown and would take too much time and effort to catalogue...no longer actively hunting and trying new stuff since I have more than I can possibly smoke before I go up in smoke...

one thing to consider about faves...the current production may be quite different from the one you grew very fond of 4-6 years ago...and the ones you acquired 4-6 years ago may change into something different as they age...for example, an old fave was a CH Las Calaveras 2014, which was a great cigar...later annual renditions were different and didn't measure up...the last one I smoked about 2 years ago was a disappointment, as it lost a lot of its character sitting all those years...

and then, I'm told that a person's palate changes as one ages...

Was thinking to myself the other day, it was reported that Kennedy purchased 1000 boxes of his favorite Cuban cigars before he signed the embargo. Who got his personal stash?

I'm a pretty random smoker. No certain rotation.
BUT I have for sure purchased more of AJ Fernandez Last Call Maduro and Roma Craft CroMagnon. I can usually find really good deals on these and they are great smokes for the money.
