I inherited a beautiful sporterized
Remington.35 caliber pump action deer rifle from my dad who got it from my
Mothers father...
It's a great deer rifle for the thick Pennsylvania woodlands...accurate as hell...

Buuutttttt...

Can't find any freakin' AMMO and when I do they want $69.99 to $80.00 for a box of "20"...that is highway robbery!!!
NO F**KING WAY AM I PAYING THAT PRICE...

I HAD TO USE my REMINGTON 783 BOLT action.223 CAL. THIS YEAR to hunt deer...and the PA GAME COMMISSION IS WORKING ON A NEW LAW FOR 2023-24 FOR a minimum .24 caliber to hunt whitetail deer...which is T.O.T.A.L. bull****...
If a .223/5.56 can kill NVA REGULARS AND TOWEL HEADED HAJI'S IN THE SANDBOX ALL DAY LONG...it can kill a deer...

I'd rather put that $70-85 bucks FOR ONE BOX OF .35 REMINGTON AMMO towards a nice .308 bolt action for $400 or less on sale...
I CAN FIND DECENT .308 AMMO FOR $24.99 TO $34.99 A BOX OF 20 RDS...

I'm down to a:

SAVAGE AXIS BOLT WITH A 3X9 SCOPE PKG $449
OR
MOSSBERG PATRIOT BOLT W/ A 3X9 SCOPE PKG
$398.00 EVERYDAY AT WALMART

WE HAVE DUNHAM'S SPORTING GOODS AROUND ME THAT RUN SALES A COUPLE TIMES A YEAR...I TRIED CABELAS AND BASS PRO BLACK FRIDAY SALES BUT EVERYONE buys online and they are sold out before you get in line at
6 am and wait 3 hrs in the cold.....screw that B.S. **** SHOW ..THOSE "BLACK FRIDAY" SALES ARE BAIT AND SWITCH L.I.E.S. on STEROIDS...

ANY ADVICE OR INSIGHTS ARE WELCOME!!

I have no experience with either rifle. The Savage Axis has a good reputation. There are a lot of good .308 rifles getting sold to buy a 6.5 Creedmoor, is more in style now. The .308 is an excellent cartridge.

Order a rifle online and get it delivered to a local FFL.

The Kentucky Gun Compay is running a sale right now and they have a bunch of .308 rifles.

On a whim I picked up a Ruger American in 308 a few years ago figuring it would be like every other Ruger rifle I've owned.............I'd spend months developing a load only to find out it shot for schit and I'd sell it for what I paid for it and move on.Well I was pleasantly surprised............in a couple weeks I'd put together 3 loads that shot MOA,two 150 grain loads for whitetail and one 180 grain load for dropping big peanut/milo fed hogs in their tracks.

You can't go wrong here but you need to invest in a reloader, dies and components........it'll save you a bundle.

I have a friend who swears by Savage,I've always found the bolts too sloppy being a snobby Browning A-Bolt guy,but he kills what he aims at so they do seem to shoot well.Might be a good purchase

My local Rural King had a table almost completely covered with .308 ammo.

Before I opened this thread I said “Savage”…..KYguns has good prices when on sale, Europtics has ok prices and usually a decent selection of stuff you don’t see at the big box stores.

.308 ammo is everywhere right now.

Have an axis in .308 I bought used along with a decent scope and 400 round of ammo. Gave $350 for the package so pretty much got the rifle for free. After upgrading the scope base and rings the stock the bolt (had extracting and ejecting problems) and trigger it shoots a ragged hole at 100 yards and is very reliable. I live in a state that doesn't allow bottle neck rifle rounds for hunting so there is almost no resell value in these around here and mine just occasionally punches paper. I would definitely recommend one of these as a starting point that you can upgrade as you see fit.

In that price range you could be into a ruger. I like them a lot

Of the two you mentioned I’d be into the savage. They make good rifles. I’d buy it over a mossberg.

Old man has a savage he likes well enough caliber escapes me right now. He has a lot of guns.

Not sure of the ammo cost difference but I personally prefer a 243 for whitetail. It can handle more but it’s a very good shooting cartridge

I have both in Remington

I will second the Ruger American.

It's above Ruger's typical quality.

I will also second reloading nearly everything, but especially for a precision rifle.

DrafterX .243 starts around a dollar a round, .308 at .62 cents….

I prefer .243 for deer, but it’s also much harder to find locally.

.308 is a cheap NATO CALIBER that seems to be avoiding the current and past ammo shortage perameters...

Is is overkill power on whitetail but that's what I'm going to get...
$69.99 -$89.99 for 20 rounds of hunting ammo is rediculous.

I don’t think it’s overkill for deer (.308) I have a 5 round mag so I can hunt with my 7.62x39.
