It's all relative, some folks are real aficionados and love to go to the ninth degree. Then there are those of us that simply enjoy something better than average and maybe even less expensive (me), that works very well. We can consult an aficionado who does all the research and testing. We benefit from their experience and they get to discuss something they really enjoy. It's a win - win situation.

Just like cigars, guns, food, movies, music etc, shaving has it's aficionados.

Got the damn razor in the mail today. Will use it in the next couple days, but damn sure nowhere near my junk. Face shaves only... Herfing

I got Treet platinum super stainless blades. We'll see how it goes. Hope it works out because I got 100 of them. If not, I'm only out $10 for the blades... and the razor might make a nice gift if I don't like it.

Treet Platinum's are made in Pakistan, I never tried those.

You shouldn't swear at your razor...it might bite you.

According to the sharpologist article Gene posted in #43, they are some of the most consistent and one of 4 that article recommends. Which is why I figured I'd give them a go, first.

you manly girls sound like the sorority sisters at Betcha Cumma Crudelis talking about maintaining their bikini lines...

being retired has freed me from the everyday shave...tried a beard but hated the itch and the Papa Smurf look (mostly white beard)

If it's been three - four days I'll use my 16 year old Gillette Fusion razor with hand soap (gasp...yes...hand soap)...refill cartridges are very cheap at Costco/Walmart/Target...never suffered a cut with this so I've stuck with it...

2 or 3 days and I'll use a Panasonic electric....12 -14 year old and still gives a decent shave

The best part about looking at the replacement cartridges going down the shaving aisle at Walmart and Target is I never have to buy any. What is it, like $35.00 for 12 5-blade Fusion cartridges..something like that? Even half that price wouldn't
be cheap. And they're a PITA, getting clogged up with hair and soap.

No thanks, I can buy 100 DE blades for $10.00 give or take a few bucks, and they keep their edge longer and I never had a problem with clogging, or getting razor bumps. I think the most I've paid for 100 blades was $20 for 100 Feather Blades a couple of years ago when they were on sale. I don't use them that often so I still have most of them.

The last cartridge razor I used was a Gillette Mach3 and it was a gift. I tried it, but never bought a single replacement cartridge for it. It's sitting in a drawer or a box somewhere here with some old Trac2 cartridges and a Schick cartridge razor handle.

I don't have to shave every day, either, Al. And I don't. Every 3-4 days, usually.

However, As Ray said... replacement blades are cheaper. If you do it right you get a closer shave, and who wouldn't want a cool razor that lasts way, way longer and only requires cheap DE razors to make it like new each time?

I'm hoping this works out for me and I like the razor. Report to follow whenever I feel like shaving again. Maybe tomorrow... it's getting stubbly.

We anticipate reviews from all new users of fancy new-fashioned "old fashioned" razors. (men from the WWI era used them too)

Then we'll decide if yooze guys need to turn in your "Man Cards ". OK?

Well, used it this morning and only 2 small knicks. But I had to shave real slow.

It's definitely something I will have to get used to. Shave didn't seem any closer than with the Mach 3.

That was probably your only choice during WWI if you didn't get issued a razor set by the army.
Being clean-shaven was required during WWI because your gas mask had to fit tightly.

Some peeps say real men shave with an axe. Scared

Ok, you get to keep your Man Card. You sacrificed only a small amount of blood to the Gods.
Practice makes perfect. We've all been there.

Which one of those new-fangled mild "old fashion" razors did you get?

I shaved with a 1930's era Gillette open-comb razor this morning. You'd probably be crying like a little beatch using that.
No big deal to me, totally blood free, comfortable, and close. It's all in perfecting your technique.

@macs that’s the thing I don’t love about a double edge. I have to go slower. I do use it when I feel like it and it’s a good shave but if you’re in the slightest hurry I’ll grab a different tool. You’ll get faster but it’s never as fast as the new razors. As far as closeness goes I don’t see any difference either way.

They’re cool though. Like I said earlier mine is my grandfathers so I’ll keep it and use it when I’m into it

Hey! What kind of Shark Tank scam is this? My antivirus blocks me from going there, says it's a phishing site.

So I found:
https://twitter.com/LegacyShave/

https://2paragraphs.com/2022/11/can-legacy-shave-brush-get-a-mark-cuban-dude-wipes-deal-on-shark-tank/

I've got one of those brush attachments for that canned foam that I got sometime way back in the 80's.
Evolutionary Legacy Shave! What a joke! They're looking for suckers to buy that chit?
Well, there are always plenty of suckers.

Ray sometimes I’ve gotta go to work man 😂. Nah if I’m not in a hurry it’s fine. I’ll cut the crap outta myself now but it’s been a while since I last cut myself shaving with it. Just saying I think you can get the task done faster with some of the newer razors.

I do still like my old one. I’ll continue using occasionally

Example my messican homie shaved his head. He asked about those razors (safety razor) told him I dig He didn’t care much for them. I can imagine shaving your head blind could be tricky with one.

Don't know much about head shaves, but guys do it with all kinds of DE and SE razors,

A newer alternative that was introduced a few years back for peeps that really like a pivoting head design and multiple blades is the LEAF Razor. Instead of expensive cartridges, It uses up to 3 DE half blades. A DE blade will snap into equal halves safely if you bend it while still in its paper wrapper until it snaps. Or you can buy half blades already made but there are a limited number of manufacturers who offer them.

https://leafshave.com

Cris shows the razor and how to snap the DE blades in half and load the razor

https://youtu.be/FvfJd0SZxi0

and...

10+ day head shave smashed by the Leaf Razor!

So he already bought one and likes it? That was fast.

The Leaf is unique in that you can use 1,2, or 3 blades in it and it has that pivoting head design. For someone who wants to escape the expensive cartridge razor game but maybe is afraid of learning traditional Double-Edge or Single-Edge shaving at this point, it's a great option. I'm not that guy but that is the market that Leaf is playing to.

So this is the razor Santa brought me for Christmas:
https://dovoonline.com/dovo-straight-razor-inox-5-8-ebony-german-solingen-415835/

FYI, I did a little research and they are not shave ready out of the box. I guess they don’t want to send out something that a novice user may slice thru his jugular on his first use.

So I opted for the additional synthetic stone sharpening service. If you get this, the factory sends the razor to an outside knife maker who puts a final edge on the blade. When I send it back to be re-sharpened I’m going to opt for the natural stone progression. It costs a tad bit more, but I’m thinking it will be even sharper.

The Strop:

Strop Dressing:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001DYHMK8?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

The Soap:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0007MW2ZW?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

The Badger Brush:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004FO74ME?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

And the Lotion:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000FGTTTW?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

There was a slight learning curve to using it as I cut myself every time for the first week. But, after that it’s been smooth sailing. Never in my life have I ever had such a close and smooth shave. Since there aren’t any appendages attached to the blade it’s easier to get those hairs just below the nose.

I’ve had a few women tell me the absolutely love the Sandlewood scent of the soap. The lotion is essential since the shave is so close you want to nourish the skin.

Overall, totally satisfied.

That TOBS is great stuff. The sandalwood made my entire bathroom smell like the soap after about a week... I had to switch to a different flavor that didn't have such a lingering scent.

It really is good stuff. As a test I shaved one side with TOS and one side with Edge. No comparison. As far as the smell, it’s not a problem. The tub has a screw on lid so it’s not exposed and giving off scent 24x7.

^same thoughts hockey.

Ray no my friend owned the razor before. I didn’t know he had it until I text him the link.

His response was I have that exact razor in that color.

We had discussed razors 6 or so months ago. He asked what I liked and if I ever used any traditional razors. Basically a one time discussion.

Pretty confident he bought it after we had originally talked razors. Just never mentioned it

I have TOBS Sandalwood but the hard puck is in the wooden bowl, not the soft cream. I got it for cheap a few years ago off an eBay auction from one of the British retailers. It's not straight sandalwood, the scent is stronger, what I would call oriental, with floral and herbal notes.
I suppose they smell the same I would guess. The only TOBS cream I have is "The Barber Shop", which is a lightly scented traditional barbershop fragrance.
