IRS letter

Got an official letter from the IRS. It said I needed to verify identity for my tax return in order for them to proceed with it.

Um... I haven't filed my taxes yet, and apparently this type of fraud is rampant. *heavy sigh*

I went to the IRS website and reported that I did NOT file my taxes yet... so now I get to file them on good old paper and mail them in. Wonderful.

Anyone else have this BS happen to them? My buddy had the same letter last year. Pain in the arse.

My father in law who is a tax man, says he has a bunch of clients that this has happened too. It's becoming more and more common with identify theft.

A two criminals problem, might want to check your credit reports and freeze them too.

I froze my years ago too, with all three credit companies. It's pretty easy to undo if you need a loan, I just set it to re-freeze after a short time.

Be careful with your SS number. Don't give it to anyone unless they are paying you. If a doctor insists on it, give them a made up number. There's no need to have it floating around where someone can find it.

A few years ago I ran into some old letters from a h.s. buddy who was in the Army at the time. I don’t remember the reason why but his SSN was on every return address. Any of you vets remember doing that on your correspondence when you were in the service?

Yep... contacted the 3 bureau's and put a freeze. I do not plan on applying for credit any time soon, if at all at this point in my life, so... frozen.

Pretty easy to do.

20 years in the military, buddy... the gov't ain't too secure with that info. Everyone has probably seen it. Surprised it took this long to have an issue.

This scamming nonsense makes me sick. However, if you have a few minutes, I'd like to talk with you about your car's extended warranty.

You’ll have to hold on for a few minutes. I’m on the phone with the IRS. They’ve frozen my account!! Shame on you

Just a little worse... can be used to wipe your butt after reading. BigGrin

Just had to take a few precautions with this one, though. Get an IRS Pin #, contact credit agencies and put a freeze. I ignored the other one.

Don't plan on getting credit for anything going forward. Prolly leave them frozen.

Do save the login/password/pincode for the future. I did not plan to get a loan for my last truck but it the interest was less than what the money was earning. It wasn't me that figured it out, it was the dope-slap from my financial guy that said I was nuts to withdraw cash that was earning me money, that woke me up.

During covid I got a letter from Virginia in regards to my unemployment claims.

I never worked in VA
I never filed claims there.

Very obvious it was a stolen identity.

I contacted the VA unemployement office.

They said: and I quote: "shrug"

They don't give a sheet that people are trying to claim false unemployment. Even during the Plandemic.

shameful.
Government workers is a misnomer.
