I don’t normally seek them out but have borrowed the first 3 a few times from the library. The last two have been watched numerous times on TV.

Saving Private Ryan
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
Letters from Iwo Jima
The Longest Day
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

One movie I have fond feelings for is “In Harm’s Way”. My Dad worked on the set as a carpenter and built the bridge of a PT boat that John Wayne stood on for a scene. Or at least that’s what I remember what my Dad told me when we saw the movie in the theater.

Edit: hafta add Schindler’s List (…thanks Bucky…) too.

I'm not a fan of war but I am a fan of history (sadly it includes war - strategy and technology of the time intrigues me).

In no particular rank I'll try to keep it to top 5

Saving Private Ryan.
Apocalypse Now.
Full Metal Jacket
Band of Brothers (not a movie but a series)
Schindler's List
The Bridge on the River Kwai

My bad, I listed 6

Both are nice picks. I don't think I've seen Hacksaw Ridge. I'll have to add it to the to do list.

The newest one?

That was fantastic. One of the best book to screen translations since Charlotte's Web.

Hacksaw Ridge, as well as the other movies I listed are based on a true story. Those are my favorite kind of movies. I forgot about Schindlers list or I would have included it. Hacksaw Ridge is about Desmond Doss, a WW2 conscientious objector who won the Medal of Honor without ever firing a weapon during the war.

My favorite is saving private Ryan.

Fury was good, but I liked Pitt's character better in Inglorious Basterds.
Also just thought of another previously unmentioned, "Valkyrie" which is also based on a true story.

Along true story conscientious objector lines, Sargeant York was a good one, if you're not opposed to really old films.

Many listed I woukd have chosen. I'll add the Dirty Dozen as one of my favorites and Das Boot for the sheer claustrophobic feeling it brings on

On a different note:
Braveheart & 300

On a Band of Brothers note, was The Pacific on par with BoB? I keep meaning to watch but have failed to do so

My buddy said I need to watch pacific. He’s a moron. But I love him. I will be watching. Same crew made it just different theatre. I’d recommend it. If it sucks im sorry

Some of the best films are the old ones. Heck, Hollywood keeps on remaking them ‘cause they can’t come up with something better.

As far as Band and The Pacific goes, I’ve watched both recently and for me, BoB is better but the perspectives are different so it just depends on your preference. One thing to note, The Pacific uses Bob Leckie’s “Helmet For My Pillow” as a source so there may be some familiarity with the storyline.

Gettysburg (Originally called Killer Angels) gets my vote with Good Morning Vietnam my second by just a hair.

I got to spend 2 weeks on the set for Gettysburg with the Fife and Drum corp i was part of at the time in the early 90s. each night at dinner we would go to massive tents for a meal, they would play footage from the previous days filing on big TVs in the tents and lots of the main cast would join us for meals. they would randomly pick tables for each of them to sit at and converse with he extras so on any day you could have a meal with any one of them. it was very cool of them to do instead of just going off to trailer village with the other stars.

Thats Awesome... I am a Civil War and Indian Wars Buff... back in the 90's I'd ride my Harley out to battle fields of the civil war and old forts and battles out west of the Indian wars. Gettysburg battlefield was something. the minute I pulled up on that Sacred Ground the hair stood up on the back of my neck and arms and remained that way the entire time I was touring the locations of the battles that took place, the same thing happened when I visited "The Wilderness" battlefield (Forest) Custers Battlegrounds my hair stood up once again.. to walk over those grounds touring is something else!!! another out west was Oglala Sioux Nation "Wounded Knee" and the history there...

As far as a Favorite War Movie? I Like almost all, and documentary's also.. cannot absorb enough Vietnam, Korean, WWII, WWI, Gulf War, Russian/Afghanistan, etc.

Latest Series is "Death From Above" docuseries on the War on Terror, air war campaigns over the years its on TUBI

Blackhawk Down: this kid who was wearing the cast in the movie, I met the actual Veteran who was in that unit in Somalia when **** hit the fan, he lives(d) in Bloomington Illinois and I built a Military display case for him back in early 2000's and hand delivered it as we tossed back a few cold one's!!! Good Guy and as he said then about the movie.. it was Holly wooded Up... LOL

13 Hours, another good movie on (Benghazi) Sec State Clinton and Obama Dropped the Football on that incident big time!!!
I could list a ton, but stopping here... Honey-Do's they are a calling!!! Beer Beer

Is Casablanca a war movie? I thought all they really did was hint that it took place during WW2?

Although I absolutely love “Casablanca”, I’ve never considered it a war movie; otherwise I would definitely have listed it.
