A speech to the American Astronautical Society, comparing the program to get back to the moon with what was written after the first visit to the moon, a real eye opener about speaking up. e.g., The current program requires in space refueling from EIGHTEEN rockets because of the orbit sequence, eighteen!

I have to wonder if there is a net positive return on the investment to go to the moon. Sure it has spun innovative technology needed get there. But, have we really benefited as a society from this? Could that technology been developed without the additional cost to see moon travel become a reality?

On the other hand, as a student of economics I understand the multiplier concept with regards to both government and private sector spending. As a result even “wasteful” government spending contributes to an increase in GDP which in of itself is a good thing. I just wonder if those tax dollars could have been used elsewhere and had an even greater benefit to our overall economic growth. Or, if had taxes been lower if we didn’t implement the lunar program would those dollars have entered the economy through the private sector and produced a greater overall benefit than it did with the lunar program. Either way, we will never know.
