One mans trash is another mans treasure as they say ... the problem is in deciding what IS a bad cigar ? Lone Wolfs, for example, are enjoyed by many ... I don't think they're a BAD cigar, just not a good one ... I think they're a waste of time, effort and money because they are completely tasteless and unsatisfactory, but others like them just fine ...

I think one of the worst cigars I ever tried was an HdM Excalibur 1066 Merlin ... do you have any idea how many guys would argue to the death with me about that and say it was one of their favorite smokes ??? They'll be chiming in soon and ripping me for saying that, you wait and see ... and THATs the problem ... individual taste is just that ... individual ... some of my favorite smokes are disliked by others but I don't let that get in the way of MY enjoyment, anymore than my dislike for some of their favorites gets in their way ...

Best thing for any new cigar smoker is to try a lot of different cigars ... remember what you like and what you don't ... then smoke what you like ...

lone wolf gets bad raps. they are ok, so are the bad frogs.

i was given a sample of don something by a rep once at it was horrible. since i can't remember the rest of the name, i steer away from any cigar that starts with don. i know that is not fair to all the good dons like corleone, and rabbi "don" schwartz, but as a "walking talking, bitter old man" but what the hell do i know.

I disagree with diesel being "bad" cigars, I like them after sitting in my tupperador for 6 months. I find them when first purchased are very green, and need some aging. The construction and draw have always been very nice.
My point being, don't knock em till you try them, especially sticks that cost a buck a piece.

Steve, I can't believe you hate Excalibur 1066's. You must've got a bad one. They are great...

Rick --- Stay away from the Arturo Fuente Don Carlos, terrible cigars.

... oh yeah, and anything made by Don Douglas (Bucanero comes to mind) ... ;^)

Don't worry Slim. Rick has gone full circle. Soon he will be praising Swishers or Dutch Masters.

Fuego Del Rey. Theres one for you Rick. They are gonna be cheap till they are gone. And they do not taste bad.

LOL. That newbie found out that this is not the place to badmouth Diesels. Note to Newbie: Do not badmouth the 5 Vegas either.

SteveS, I don't care for for the Excaliburs or the 1066's. However, the regular HdM line-up is outstanding and their double maduros/oscuros represent a remarkable value. Perhaps, their marketing people felt that they needed to refresh their market presence with more upscale offerings. At least they had the sense not to mess with the old Hoyos. As per another post, the ISOM Hoyos are, IMHO, among the world's best.
My heresy is to think that Montecristos are overrated. I feel about them as you feel about the Lone Wolfs. Just nothing special there for me. Didn't make me puke though.

Lone Wolf's smoke fine, I just don't like the after taste. This is what I mean by a bad cigar, one that make you want to gargle after smoking.

I like 5 Vegas, no bad after taste. I like Hoja de Nicaragua in the Consul size, but the Churchill size left a bad taste.

Won a tin of the Cuban Honey's (vanilla) recently. They're coated in sugary crap that completely ruins the tobacco. Wow are they awful!! If you enjoy cigars the way I do (and I like lots and lots and lots of different kinds), avoid these --- 'caveat emptor' almost enough to make you sick to your stomach. YECHH!!!!!

I avoid flavored cigars of any and all types ... I have two flavoring jars that I can use to flavor my own and have found the results to be FAR more subtle than those that come pre-flavored because the process infuses an already good cigar with the aroma and flavor of cognac or brandy or whatever one chooses to use ... MrsS likes cigars I've flavored for her and so do some other folks, but I don't ... I prefer my cigars to taste like tobacco ...

Flavored tobacco of all types seems to me to be an inferior product that is heavily masked by the heavy handed method used by most manufacturers ... the end product is not one I would like if it were not flavored and flavoring doesn't change that ... it serves only to make it "icky" ...

I've got a couple wolfs lying around to see if anything good comes from age.

I really dislike Hamilton House.

I like 5 Vegas but I really hated the 5 Vegas Pyramide. I don't know what happened there, but I think the shape affected the taste.

I haven't tried Diesel yet, but it is on my "to do" list.

Thank goodness everybody's taste is not the same, otherwise we would only have a handfull of types of cigars to smoke & everyone would have look alike purses...hehehe
SteveS, I recieved an Aristoff conecticut shade cigar in a bundle one from cbid ages ago.. it was a flavored cigar with something but no decription. That is still one of my favorites. I have a few of the Gurkha Royal Salutes but have yet to try one. It smells good and is supposed to imbued with Louis XIII. Normally as a whole I like my cigars to taste like tobacco too. Please send me your method of flavoring & I'll try it once.

i have to agree with what steve s has said in this and several other posts that are on point with this topic. smoke a lot of different cigars and remember what you like. and don't trust your memory. write it down, get a software program, dictate it, what ever. keep the notes for your first year or so,( at least ) and then review occasionaly. you will notice your taste growing.

I am glad Rick does not buy cigars with "don" in their name. I do not like a strong cigar and the Don Guillermo brand in any size has probably the best flavor I have tasted, no bad after taste. Since they are not a popular brand, and I do not see them for sale too often, I buy them when I can, now have six boxes of various sizes stored away. Glad I did not have to bid against you Rick! (The Don Guillermo's have delicate Connecticut shade wrappers that will split and break if too dry or too wet, the cigar moisture must be a perfect 70%.) Have paid from $9 a box to $27 a box. Anyone else tried this brand?

I too think the Diesels are ok with age too, Lone Wolf, wasn't terrible, it was just uneventful and didn't buy anymore.

Lastly, I cannot opinionate about Bad Frogs, I made a bad pun about these and have now promised Rick, (as much as it scares me, hate to waste good money), to purchase a 5 pack, before I can use this brand in one of my famous rebuttals, to tasteless remarks in other post.

I bought a 5-pack of the Montegue naturals. The word ASS comes to mind. It tastes too awful to be tasteless. Had them in the humidor for 3 months. Smoked one and looked for crap stains on my mouth. Made the mistake a week later of trying a second one. Bad mistake. I took the remaining three out of my box drove 3 hours and buried them. Would of sent them to RICKAMAVEN if I only knew his whereabouts.

Sadly, the CAO Criollos. Nicely packaged, the pigtail's Ok, but just nothing good to them, as far as my taste buds are concerned. And the Drew Estates oiled cigars aren't to my taste at all.

If I may, I'd like to add another piece of crap on a stick to the growing list of (non)favorites. La Fontana Vintage. Sort of like smoking a fine blend of drywall and sawdust. A truly hideous offering from the same company who gives you the equally nasty Baccarat.

OK ... I agree the Lone Wolf in its current incarnation is bland - got a smell like those 3-foot high ditch weeds you mow in August. But to do a 180 on you - the Lone Wolf Lobo Rojos, which are pretty much impossible to find anymore, were very good. A darker wrapper, bolder blend. Sinatra's are bad news. Hamilton House are just about the same. Some of it depends on the storage the 'gar has had.

I just bought a Cibao to try it out and was really looking forward to it until I just read the negitive comments.

Now, I'm a "newbie" cigar smoker, and a light cigar smoker at that. Usually not more than two a day sometimes not at all, but I can say I've never been happy with any seconds I've ever tried. Rolly #2 comes to mind. I had to give most of those away. And I tried a mexican cigar made by a company called Castelli (or something close to that name) that for some reason coats all thier cigars in Nutri-Sweet. That was the most horrible thing I've ever tasted. Anyways, just my two cents

CNC, try Consuegras. Seconds of Villazon cigars like Punch, Hoyo de Monterrey, ERDM etc. The #733, 73, and 9 are particularly good.

Don Guillermo cigars:

Nato

in my younger days, as a single man, i once asked a friend who lived for his female encounters only, if he ever turned down an invitation by a lady.

his response was "i'd walk a mile in the mud knowing it was going to be bad."

there are no bad cigars, just better ones.

there are lots of bad cigars, many can be found right here. it all boils down to money. in most circumstances it costs the grower more to produce better quality. sometimes any grower will have dumbluck, the perfect of seasons, etc., and produce a cheap fantastic cigar. you see this alot with california vineyards in the wine industry. i find that sampling any cigar is fun. i keep the ones i like, and share the ones i dont. farginfrugal ITS ALL FUN!

I don't feel it would be wise to create a list of bad cigars for people to stay away from. What denotes a cigar as bad? Your tastes. Your tastes are not the same as my tastes, or anybody elses here for that matter. Who's to say you will enjoy the smokes others label good cigars?

If you see smokes that interest you, try them, then decide for yourself.

what jreddoch said. Plus, I agree there are several on this list that I LOVE! that other's don't think highly of, Crillo, Fuente Don Carlos (that one was a joke, right?), Excalibur 1066's, Brazilla's and Indian!! Come on!! Those are great smokes!

The moral is, smoke what you like and like what you smoke, but as a PSA, please pass on notes about dog rockets... For instance, it didn't look like anyone had nice things to say about the wolf! I may want to avoid that brand...

Unless you like it, it is bad. That is a short way of saying what others have already said. One man's passion is another man's poison.

Cigars are like women. For me a cigar (or a woman) is bad if I wish I never met it (or her). The difference between bad cigars and bad women is that bad cigars are easy to get rid of.
