Just trying to understand the lingo. Sorry to waste your time with a question like this. There should be a key for the slang for us newbies to use. Or is this a ploy to keep the ignorant guessing?

I think we just had this same question in a thread a few days ago ...

Gig 'em is a phrase used at Texas A&M ... unsure of it's origins (I'm sure Dan can tell you more) but it's used in a "go team" sorta way for their footballers ... goes back to the 40s I think. Put the phrase in a search engine such as Google and I'll bet you learn more than you ever wanted to know

Actually Gig’ Em stands for “Go Lakers!”

Just kidding…

I know it’s a phrase used by them Aggies at A & M, and I can only make a SWAG, about what it means…I would guess that Steve is probably right. "Go Team" or a fight call of some kind maybe.

Joel

"Go Lakers!"

..actually it's a phrase use not by the boys from College Station but about them. It means stick a fork, usually referring to a pitch fork, in 'em. A gig proper is a spring-loaded device, similar to a clamp trap, set at the end of a four to six-foot pole and is used to catch frogs. Press the gig down on the frog and the clamp teeth release trapping the amphibian. Pull the frog up, release the teeth and drop your catch in a bucket. Legs are about the only edible part on a frog. You know, taste like chicken.

DHofer did answer this question on another thread a week or so ago. I was the one that asked the question; I was curious because I've heard it for years from the other side (I'm an anti-Aggie, a Longhorn). Believe it or not, if I remember correctly it goes back years and originally meant something about castrating! Really! D could have been messing with me, though. I definitely do believe, though, that an Aggie would yell "Castrate the Horns!"
(Disclaimer: In spite of this rivalry, I still consider D a pretty good guy!)

Are you sure it's not what a drunk ice fisherman would say refering to jigging deep water walleyes after consuming 12 Linenkugel's on a sub zero day? We generally start to slur after roughly 12 Linnies and say "gig'em" instead of jig'em!

I would say it also could be used in Frog gigging, and old practice that Southerners refer to as gigging frogs with a trident shaped gig and then they fry the legs.............taste like chicken, so leave the poor frogs alone and eat chicken!!!

LOL

Yes! I propose the Aggies dispose of their collie dog and adopt that frog as their mascot.

It could refer to the frog catching idea. You can also gig a fish. But that is an illegal type of fishing.

It basically means wrap a rope around the other teams body part and pull!

Hook em Horns!

OK ... Here is the meaning of "Gig 'em" taken from the Texas A&M Website "Traditions" page ...

Gig 'em
At a yell practice before the 1930 TCU game, A&M board of regent Pinky Downs '06 shouted, "What are we going to do to those Horned Frogs?" His muse did not fail him as he improvised, borrowing a term from frog hunting. "Gig 'em, Aggies!" he said as he made a fist with his thumb extended straight up. And with that the first hand sign in the Southwest Conference came into being.

Rick, perhaps "Gig 'em" can be your new war cry before lighting one of those Bad Frogs. This might also alert innocent bystanders to clear the area.

WOW, I haven’t realized that I have been here that long when people start to wonder what I am posting. haha but yeah we have all kind of crazy traditions at A&M, some are cool like going to a drunkin yell fest the night before a football game, standing during the length of the football game to honor the 12th man all kinds of crazy stuff, one thing that sucks is we still have "YELL LEADERS"AKA GUYS and not cheerleaders AKA SHORT SKIRTED GIRLS.

Sorry to confuse ya’ll, I just wanted to have something that stuck out of who I was cause my user name is so plain. I have talked to Trish and she said I couldn’t change it with out opening a new account, so I us GIG’EM for people to know who I am. Most of ya’ll have cool names or standout really well and GIG’EM is the closest to standing out I could think of.

The meaning of GIG’EM is some crazy way of killing frogs and we say it to intimidate other schools (NEVER WORKS) it really doesn’t make any sense but most things don’t around here especially my classes HAHA.

GIG’EM,

DAN
