We have had a no smoking law here in Calfornia for a while know. I acually like the law. I cant stand the smell of smoke when im trying to eat dinner or at a resturant with my nephews and neice. So I guess all you New Yorkers can start doing what use Californians have been doing for a while, and have to go outside and smoke. Frank

I live in California and think the no smoking laws are as ridiculous as they can get!!! It is the Big Brother is watching out for your health and well being crap that I think is really tilted!

Plus they tax the hell out of us for tobacco products! I believe in smoking sanely, like in clubs that were set up for cigar smoking and bars!!! Not in family resturants and there is the "rub", they went to the extreme with this law in California like they do with everything out here!

It's just a shame that as Free American Adults we are not capable of taking care of our own health or being considerate of others (called manners). Therefore because we (as cigar smokers) are rude, illmannered, ignorant bastiges we must be outlawed, or at least regulated.

We fight wars in the name of Freedom and then give up our rights in the "name of what ever cause" fits the politacally correct forum of the day.

There, that's as tall as my soap box gets,

You are not alone. I read in today's LA Times (a very liberal rag) that ITALY (a country where I thought everyone at one time or another smoked), is actually requiring bars and restaurants to set up designated "smoking areas". caio.

I agree with you Charlie California should allow smoking in clubs and or bars, but I think they should keep it out of a family orientated place.

.... the really sad part of all the above is that the Club/Restuarant Owners have ALWAYS had the option of making their establishments "Smoke-Free" ... and what decision did they make? Geesh ... every day makes me wish I'd been born 100 years earlier ... with the insight to at least try to stop the B.S. in society today from becoming reality.

Hey rockjr6, if you don't like the smoke don't go. If enough people don't go the owner may decide to limit smoking. It should be the owner's decision. Enough gov't involvement already. That you can take joy at the loss of freedom shows the extent and effectiveness of our "Nanny States'" propaganda machine.

Here is an excerpt from an article posted on the internet on 12/20/02.....

"A compromise worked out between New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the City Council paves the way for smoking to be prohibited in most public establishments and workplaces in the city, the Associated Press reported Dec. 12.

Under current city law, smoking is banned in restaurants with more than 35 seats. However, smoking is permitted in stand-alone bars within restaurants.

The proposed smoking ban would apply to almost all restaurants and bars, pool halls, bingo parlors, bowling alleys, and offices.

As a result of a compromise between Bloomberg and council members, outdoor cafes, bars with specially ventilated smoking rooms, private clubs, nursing homes with smoking rooms, and existing cigar bars would be exempt from the ban."

An important addition not mentioned above but that I read in another article states that once a cigar bar closes, another one is NOT allowed to open in it's place. This includes taking over the business and renaming it!!

A side note to New Yorkers.....

The new law also does not include McSorleys Ale House, which if your from NY you know the place. McSorleys Ale House is a Historical Landmark and is not subject to the smoking laws. This I was told from one of the bar employees after I asked where the bars ventilation system was and he pointed to a side door that was open a crack and said "Here is our ventilation system" After which he explained what I wrote above.

If your a smoker and come to NYC, I have two excellent establishments to choose from -

McSorleys Ale House or The Gingerman cigar bar

Both excellent choices!!

No, no. It's an old Irish ale house, the oldest continuous serving Ale house in NY. They only serve their own ale - light or dark. Nothing else. They managed to keep serving during Prohibition (The politicians & police were all customers).

They have been open since 1854 and as the sign painted on the front window states... "We were here before you were born"

I liked the Marty McSorley tie in though, never thought of that!!
