was nothing short of magical. Now, I may not be as seasoned as most of you all, but this was a wonderful cigar. It was one of the new XV's. The taste was awesome, even before I lit it up. It only got better. I've found another love.

My first cigar was a Cuban Cohiba Robusto, I was incredible then and they are even better now that my palate has developed over time.

I've seen these but haven't tried them yet. Maybe I'll have to pick one up.

Glad you liked it tarheel, I've smoked one and found it harsh and expensive. I don't know if I'll try another with that price tag but I usually give cigars a 2nd chance.

The Cohiba XVs, IMHO, were the only Cohibas (legal) that I even gave a chance and that was because I got them from Mean in a trade. The legal Cohibans are all way overpriced for what you get. I'll stack an El Rico Habano against a Cohiba XV anyday. I occasionally spend the money on high dollar smokes (Ashton VSG, PAMs, Opus, CAO cammies, Hemmingways, etc.) but not on the Cohibas.

Thanks for the info, JD1. I'll try the El Ricos.

Another great alternative snow are the Oliva O...regular or the maduro.

Tar, I know what you mean. They're great cigars. The standard "red dots" pale in comparison. I picked up a box of 654s in a trade. My only regret is that there's only 20 in a box.

Well, I just got back from a lunchtime visit to my local cigar stealer/dealer. Bought a pair of the XVs. I'm not sure of the number but they are about churchill size. That was a fast $20. They look and smell wonderful. Can't wait for the ride home.

You probably got 749s. That's the size I smoke and they are great. I agree that the Olivia O's are fantastic. Haven't laid hands on an "O" maduro yet, but have smoked about a box of the sungrowns. They are up there with the XVs. I actually prefer XVs or O's to the VSGs. I've only got 2 VSGs left and I'm probably going go let them sleep a while.

snow,
Interesting observation on your other sun grown in comparison to the VSG. I've only smoked a fresh VSG or two early on but (because of price) have since let them age to over 6 months before smoking about 1/month maybe two. I've notice the same amount of spice but an increase in pepper much more with age. I've not notice much in the way of "pepper" in the O's or El Rico nor the XV, but my O's and El Ricos are aging now and don't have quite 4 months on them, so we'll see if it comes through. An 8 month old or older VSG is an incredible experience!

So now you've really got me convinced to let them sleep. For no particular reason, I've never let my VSGs get much past a couple of months. I'll get back with you sometime this summer on the results.

while I was hanging around the schop here today, the manager went in and pulled out a box of VSG's. He let me sample one of them, and I must say, it was incredible right out of the box. I can't imagine what it would be like after a few months of aging.
