rhobbs, Tarpon?

I'm jealous, Costa Rica has been on our wish list of vaction/fishing spots for years. 2 coasts just 90 miles apart. A fisherman's paradise. Smoke one for me while you're there.

JC...I am pretty sure the factory moved to Nicaragua. Most of the people that I know always bring back un-banded cigars.

any of the factories that were there ie Bahia are all in Nicaragua now. i did pick up some cigars that they sold at the airport that are local and they were pretty good. i was in san jose and i found a shop run by a cuban man that sold real cuban cigars, but other than that place, watch out, tons of fakes eveywhere, at hotels and even the bell boys at hotels say they can hook you up (with cigars that is).

Yes! 4 days of Marlin/sailfish on the pacific side, a place called Guanamar in Carrillo Beach. I have been warned of the many fakes sold there that is why I was looking for some locals to try. and yes the coffee is great but so is the rum.

Anytime you are out and about, have your passport with you. The policia are not very friendly when you don't have it with you!

Spent many vacations there, but my last time was several years ago. Cigar shops weren't on my A list then, but tarpon fishing and the beaches (and women)were phenominal.

I found, even then, Cuban cigars were available but costly. Fakes were around but not like Mexico. Cubans are legal there of course, but tobacco taxes are high on imports. (all imports are taxed up the wazoo regardless of the product). You will get a feel for people who are being honest. A nice, well kept tobacco shop will probably have a genuine thing for sale. Liquoreras, bars, convenience stores, won't have the real thing for the most part.

You can get the best deals on the local stuff. Anything made there is sold at a good price. If you want to load up on what Costa Rica does best, stick to coffee and rum. (I used to bring an empty suitcase and fill it with coffee and rum, but that was before Customs really clamped down on those things). Buy your coffee and rum at a Supermercado not at a tourist shop or airport.

Always have your passport. Everyone will ask for it. cops are cool if you give them a few Colones (bucks) to watch your car or to give directions or advice.

Enjoy your trip...wish I was going again soon.

Don Tuto.I think they have a web site. When I go,in March or April,I'll be asking 'Donde esta las tabacleras',and try and visit a couple. In other countries I've found one man shops, basicly the torcedero rolls for the neighborhood.Or try to meet the manager of a tabacalera and take him to lunch,or fishing with you.You may see loose cigars sold in the markets(the old ,outdoor ones not the Supermercados),I'd buy one and try it on the spot before grabbing a bundle.
