Why is it that some cigars have been recommended with the 'don't smoke it on an empty stomach' addage?

I know that smoking cigars is cause to upset ones spouse, but what causes a cigar to upset ones tummy?

I've gotten a few pretty good buzzes off of some cigars, but never a bellyache...

Ever tried something along the lines of a 62 ring Cuban Parejo on an empty stomach?

Oof. Dizziness bordering on nausea. Still a good smoke, though. :)

Smoking a strong cigar an empty stomach is like drinking hard liquor an empty stomach. You definitely feel it more and quicker. X

I think it's the nicotine ... and the stronger the cigar, the more truth there is in it ... there is, I think, a certain 'immunity' to be built up so more experienced smokers are less easily affected than those who've not smoked much ...

I hadn't experienced that sort of sensation in years until this last November when I learned that a Joya de Nicaragua Antano torp isn't the best choice for an after breakfast morning smoke on a morning one has skipped breakfast ... the effect was so great, I was not only horribly nauseated, but in a profuse sweat and apparently quite pale looking .... we were on the freeway, but traffic was quite heavy and we were not at high speed, so I couldn't even catch much of a breeze ... MrsS suggested tossing the cigar since it was having such an incredible effect on me, but I said "hell no, this smoke is too great for that!!!" ...

did I mention that cigar smokers are a peculiar sort?? ... yeah, we must be ... that smoke was so damn good, it was making me sick to my stomach, shake like a leaf in the breeze and perspire so greatly it looked as if a bucket of water had been poured over me .... what would make her sugest I might want to toss it out the window ??? And guys I've told of my experience asked only "what kind of cigar was that again??? ... I've gotta TRY one of those!!!"

Marla, Steve, & others don't know if it was the Cao moontrance or the Monte #2 or the bottle of Mondavi reserve..lol but got a definite buzz this evening when out. Usually not that reckless but the more you get to know the more you know the reason why. My brother murdered on the 7th a few years back and it's always a sensitive time. Why do we always talk so when under the influence...lol Those Cuban Parejo stay away from..

What X said. My Petron "to-kill-ya" will hit you differently if you haven't eaten all day, than if you've just finished a steak/baked potato/garlic bread feast. It's just the full-bodied cigars that do it. I like the feeling, but I'm sure it's the same thing that makes a newbie get sick. Mrs. Snowwolf thinks I'm nuts. Like she didn't know that before we were married.

I think it's part advertising hype, to make it sound tasty, or ooooh! Part truth for the inexperienced and part bull for those of us that can smoke anything anytime.

32 years of smoking cigars, I still have one first thing when I get up.

I usually don't have too much problem with cigars on an empty stomach, although I try to keep the "full bodied" cigars till after a meal. I seem to have more reaction if I smoke a cigar, any medium to full body, in the summer when I go from an air-conditioned environment outside during a very hot day and smoke one in the sun. I think everyone just reacts a little different.

Sometimes it's just the cigars. Some, like Baccarat, are touted as a mild cigar I just seem to find them disagreeably harsh and strong (in a bad way) while other "full-bodied" cigars like Joya de Nicaragua Antanos seem incredibly mild to me.

Hell, that's why they make so many different cigars. Different strokes for different folks.

I smoke more mild cigars in the morning. If I'm on an empty stomach, I have noticed that if I chew on the end a little, the juices that I swallow will cause my tummy a little discomfort.

After a meal nothing I smoke bothers me.

SteveS,

I had an identical experience with the Joya de Nicaragua. Serious dizziness and sweat on an empty stomach. Great flavor and billows of smoke, but it smoked me as much as I smoke it.

Later, I smoked one with a full stomach and thing were much better. Even found my floundering pool skills improving. Not sure if there is a connection.

Marla, you just need a big ole chaw of some Red Man chewing tobacco!!!! And make sure to swallow some!!

I'm sure most everyone here has childhood storys of chewing tobacco, cigarettes, cigars and their ill effects. I know I went home "as pale as a ghost" a few times.

It's not just the nicotene from the smoke. If you chew the end or just leave the gar in your mouth while smoking you get more of the good stuff in your system.

All that stuff ends up in your stomach via your saliva. Then on to the blood stream.

Smoked a Camacho Diploma once after a breakfast of pop tarts on my last fishing trip. I figured that was enough in my stomach besides the coffee. Sure was a great smoke (still is) while driving to the next river that morning. All was well until I got out of the truck. I was "null and void" for about an hour. Was definitely light headed after that one. Now I only smoke my full-bodied sticks after a decent sized meal after lunch or dinner. I do find that I enjoy my cammies with coffee in the morning with no ill effects.
