Foiling Bid Restrictions...

I wanted to share my strategy for foiling restrictions on bidding from otherwise loveable partners. I say 'otherwise loveable' because cigar restrictions push the envelope, in my opinion, but, then again, she thinks I take the whole smoking thing way too seriously...whatever.

Basic strategy: explain the importance of aging. This may confuse her, but that is fine...that means she'll likely nod and pretend to understand. We all do that when we are embarrassed that we can't follow what someone is saying. Make the point that there is no sense in smoking a cigar if it is less than 'x' years old after purchase (x stands for however many years you need to justify). Then point out that, with your purchases, you are merely building to the point where every cigar you smoke is x-years aged. "Babygirl, you know that takes a LONG time. Just be patient. We're getting started in this, building up to the good part. Someday we'll look back and be thankful we started this!"

Advantages:

1. You constantly buy in order to keep up the 'x-years until smoking' supply. The supply needs constant replenishing, even though you won't theoretically be smoking the cigar for a year or two.

2. It is actually very rational and actually true. That way you are not lying to her (in case you care about such things).

3. The x can be changed as you go along..."babycakes, really, it is wasting to smoke this cigar when it is only aged a year. It needs another year, at least. It's like I'm throwing away our money. You don't want that, do you?" Self-perpetuating. You can always say "I am still learning about how to get the most for our money." Admitting your fallibility and flounderings can, when phrased correctly, make you adorable and lovingly pitiable. Sure, in doing this you swallow some pride, but, hey, smokes and more smokes are at stake.

4. Liberal use of the 'we' makes her feel included in a 'joint project,' which is always to your advantage, methinks.

If that fails, go the high school route: get her drunk, then break the news.

Just my strategy. It works for now, so I thought I'd share.

John

John...that strategy does work! I even talked my wife into letting me get an 80 box humidor made so that I could properly age my sticks..."and honey, look at what an attractive piece of furniture it makes". (also, have those sticks shipped to the office)

Robby...very funny. Yes, I know what you are referring to...

Good point on the furniture thing. Forgot that. Include her in the purchase choice, oooing and ahhhing over the pretty wood and nice cedar smell.

Interesting thread. My wife bought me my first humidor(a 75ct). Then 2yrs. later I used the "aging" explanation to move up to a 300ct. box. The problem is, no matter how much capacity I have, the compulsion to keep it full is relentless. Then I purchased a 150ct. box for my "higher end" smokes. Recently I purchased a 25ct. one for work. Truth is, I'm running out of alibis. Sooner or later it will turn ugly.

I have a strategy too! Get my wife drunk, Oh, I get drunk too! Then I tell her about every bid. The next shippment comes in, and of course she is saying, what the hell have you been doin? I plead the fifth & say you were there! Works every time!

Yeah, my dog doesnt really give me too much crap about the smokes here either. She seems to not care as much as I would think. Oh wait, I meant my girlfriend. JK. ;-)

As a matter my dog must end up liking the 'gar bidding, because when I am at the store buying more beer, I end up getting more bones for her because I always think that I ran out for some reason. It's a win win situation for both of us.

daveyg2, thats funny! I dont think my dog minds it either. My wife makes me smoke outside, and my dog goes inside and out with me when I go for a toke!

She makes me go outside because of the pets! Hehehe!!

You are the ruler of your house and absolutely don't have to justify anything! As master of the household you can do anything you want! Order what you want, buy whant you want, smoke when and where you want, if your wife objects just lay down the law!

God I'm glad she never reads this board!

Went to Walmart the other day and found a low profile rubbermaid container....should fit nicely under the bed and hold another 10-12 boxes...she'll never find it there at least for a while...by then...I'll have found another hiding place for it...maybe under my daughter's bed...then I'll be home free. After about a year, I'll just tell her I had it all along..."Don't you remember?"...

Canyon...true mine doesn't read this forum.

Anyway, for any newlyweds out there....you only get to "lay down the law" once. You soon find out, you can lay down anything you like...but that doesn't mean you're gonna get to.

According to Tom Ridge, we all need more cigars in case of terrorist attacks. I am getting another igloo to fill up as part of my patriotic duty.

You see, my beautiful young wife happens to be the only adult in the house, but I happen to have access to the finances....my birth day is on the 28th of this month and she asked me what i want (quote, "and it better not be more damn cigars!"). So, i was afraid to ask because it's a box of Joya De Nicaragua Antano 1970 Gran Consuls.....they're only $58 before shipping (can't say where, sorry) I really am afraid of this woman! LOL!
