I recently purchased a gallon of PG from a chemical supply depot in an attempt to find a cheaper solution to the PG 50/50 sold by my local cigar store. It is about 15 times cheaper if you mix it yourself with distilled water. I have used store bought PG 50/50 and had good results, my question would be, do I mix the PG half and half with the distilled water by volume or by weight seeing how PG weighs more than water. I tried it 50/50 by volume sort of eyeballing it in my squirt container, it seemed thicker than the store bought stuff I have used in the past and it didnt seem to work as well. Help me before I ruin the sticks in my 7 humidors.

Please help an aspiring chemist.

Check this website. It mentions that PG is heavier than water and to mix accordingly.

thanks for the input, I have read both of those articles already. Seems to be the way to go. If you end up somehow with too much pg in your humidifier, what can/will it do to your sticks?

I use a ratio of 3:1 Distilled H2O:PG and it works perfectly.

Oops! 2:1. 1/3 cup PG to 2/3 cup D. H2O.

too much PG will dry out your humidor. I add a 50/50 by volume soln. once every 3 months or so and just distilled water in between. I have had very good results with this.

funny..

I've been mixing 50/50 by volume for years with perfect results.. if its wrong it works anyways..

I'll check out the info on the website mentioned above.

Thanx all for the info..

I failed chemistry (among others) so forgive my ignorance on this subject but how much actual differance are we talking between volume and weight?

I think the difference is really small. A 50-50 mix by volume gives you 51% PG and 49% water.

I live in Ottawa Canada so it is exremely dry here in the winters, especially indoors due to the fact that the natural gas furnace runs from Nov 1st to pretty much May 1st, and I dont have a humidifier on my furnace. The PG I bought was only about 14 bucks Canadian ($200.00 US) for the gallon. What a deal. Anyhow, thanks for the input fellas, Hope to see you all in Bethlehem PA some day. Keep Smokin. Our city went completely non-smoking August of 2001. Since then I am relegatated to puffing in the garage or in my car. Thankfully my job is 100% in the car.

14 canadien is 9 US just to clarify... Almost crapped my pants when I read that at first.

Another trick is to place a room humidifier in the same room as your humis so they don't have to work so hard.
