Not a big fan of Maher in general, I find him too smug to be entertaining (personal judgment), but his show was ok. My big complaint is that he has Ann Coulter on. I know he wants a balanced viewpoint, but she is just so idiotic it kind of ruined the show for me. She throws out completely absurd points and they end up having to talk about it because she bleats on and on about them.

Example: she claims everyone who opposed Star Wars Defense Initiative should be imprisoned for treason.

Then they talk about that, as if it was a legit issue. It really isn't. I have no problem with, and even prefer, conservatives as part of the discussion. And I prefer that they be VERY conservative. But she is just so moronic and unproductive for conversation...ruined a lot of the show. I found myself missing the reasoned and liberal politics of Pat Buchanan. That's says it all right there.

I mean, seriously...why discuss if opposing SDI is an act of treason? Boring and irritating and unproductive.

On the upside, Sara Silverman was on and she is both funny and friggin' hot.

i sometimes wonder if coulter is around, simply to show how stupid she is and therefore diminishing the validity of any conservative ideas.

if you met her at a bar, one drink and you would be sorry you sat next to her.

if she were a blind date, after diner you would excuse yourself and go towards the men's room, out the back door and leave her there.

goldie hawn used to play a character like her on "laugh in" wxcept her character was amusing.

Rick,

I've wondered the same about Coulter. Next time you see her, check out her ears. They are like huge pancakes. That's a cheap shot, but, then again, she wants to put me in prison for thinking SDI is a bad idea.

I agree that Maher is smart and funny. Just grates on me for a reason I can't pin down. I watched the show because he will make some funny cracks, many usually. Plus, after the b.s. with ABC when they fired him (and Ari Fleischer's remarks! That was insane!), I thought I owed him a watch or two. I'll watch again, for sure. Beats most of the crap on television. I mean, seriously...WHO is watching that celebrity get me out of here thing? Personally, I can't stomach it. And I do like bad television...with limits.

Ski, I was just reading your last post...figures! I mean you liking "bad" TV and being a Philosophy prof.! There's an old book, if you've never heard of it...you might like it. It's called "Amusing Ourselves To Death", and Postman would've nailed it to the floor with this book if he only knew about the impact the internet would play in getting people back to the art of discussion.

Put the remote down!

i think the rason he grates on you is because he whines a little when he talks and he is a "high talker."

i give him credit for having guests that are totally the opposite of his ideology and dialoging (hmm, it is a real word, i'll be damned) with them. he doesn't always win. of course that can't be said about o'rielly, the current joe pyne, if you go back that far.

Why rickles...I'm surprised! You said you DIDN'T watch FoxNews! If you did you'd notice that the ONLY time he disagrees with a guest is when they start to "spin" or side-track from an answer. It's a neat way of running a show that's low on time. This way the guest can state what the facts are on a particular topic without having to wade throught the personal opinion, or letting them blather to the point of making no sense and leaving little time for a counter point.

Love him or hate him, he's got the best show!

i don't think i said i didn't watch o'reilly, i like to see and hear what the other minorities are saying. o'reilly, is a typical smart as new york type, who is rude and quotes facts made from whole cloth.

i glom whatever is around to keep informed. in the car i listen to putnam and that nin-com-poop michael medford on our 840 am in la. it's so patriotic and narrow minded it reenforces my personal beliefs.

Strong parenting and nightly family discussions around the dinner table prepared Bill well for a broadcasting career more successful than even his mother could have imagined. From his teenage business mowing lawns, Bill graduated to house painting and lifeguarding. His lifelong interest in sports began in childhood also, when he revered star athletes like Joe Namath and Willie Mays. As he grew, Bill played goalie for his high school ice hockey team, switched to football in college where he played as quarterback, punter, and place-kicker, and even enjoyed a brief career as a semi-pro baseball pitcher.

Bill earned a degree in History from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. He also studied abroad, spending his third year of college studying at the University of London. Upon graduation Bill became a high school teacher in Miami, Florida, where he taught for two years. Bill began his pursuit of a broadcasting career upon enrollment in Boston University's Broadcast Journalism program, from which he obtained a Masters Degree.

Armed with his new Broadcast Journalism credentials, Bill began his television-broadcasting career in Scranton, Pennsylvania at WNEP-TV. His hard-hitting reporting style and non-stop work ethic allowed him to work his way up the broadcasting ladder in following years. Bill worked at WFAA-TV in Dallas, TX, KMGH-TV in Denver, CO, KATU-TV in Portland, OR, WFSB-TV in Hartford, CT, and eventually wound up back in Boston, MA at WCVB-TV.

In 1980 Bill really began to break away from the pack when he was recruited to WCBS-TV in New York City to anchor his own program. His success there soon resulted in Bill becoming a correspondent for CBS News. His correspondent work was wide-ranging and included covering the wars in El Salvador and the Falkland Islands.

ABC News liked Bill's style enough to hire him in 1986 to join them as a correspondent for The World News Tonight. During his three years as part of the team at The World News Tonight, Bill earned two Emmy Awards and two National Headliner Awards for Excellence in Reporting. He appeared on Peter Jennings' program more than 100 times.

Inside Edition called in 1989 and recruited Bill to become a Senior Correspondent and backup Anchor for the nationally syndicated television show. Bill succeeded David Frost as Anchor of that show within three weeks of his arrival. Bill's six years of hard work and outstanding reporting helped propel Inside Edition to become one of the highest rated "infotainment" programs in the USA.

Bill left Inside Edition in 1995 to pursue a Masters Degree in Public Administration at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Upon graduating from Harvard, Roger Ailes, Chairman & CEO of the then startup FOX News Channel, hired Bill to create and anchor a new television show called The O'Reilly Factor.

The O'Reilly Factor (Mondays through Fridays on Fox News Channel) has since grown to become the most-watched program in cable news. Bill's trademark "No Spin Zone" has consistently promoted accountability among our public officials and discussion of issues important to our society.

Expanding from his television base, Bill recently launched "The Radio Factor" radio show through the Westwood One radio network, as well.

Success has attended Bill's efforts as an author, too. The O'Reilly Factor and The No Spin Zone, Bill's non-fiction books, have both reached number one on The New York Times bestseller list. Mel Gibson's Icon Productions also has optioned Bill's novel Those Who Trespass for the motion picture screen.

A family man, Bill continues to live on Long Island where his best friends are guys with whom he attended first grade. His personal interests include sports, travel, and collecting historical documents. Bill's favorite pro sports teams include the New York Mets and Jets, the Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants and New York Islanders. His professional and personal travels have taken him to 58 countries, as well.

He is funny, he goes a little too far, like saying the idiots who flew the planes into the WTC were brave men! They were stupid and he sounded stupid by saying that about them, and still regrets that mixup in wording!

Just another comedian!

Maher can be funny, and is obviously intelligent, but if he is going to preach to other than the choir he will have to get rid of the air of superiority.

tailgater - Yes Maher is "smart", you may not agree with him but don't you think earning a degree from Cornell University usually leads to someone becoming more intelligent? Or is everyone who holds ideas or opinions different from yours a moron?

You're right, that puts it all in perspective...

cwilhelmi,

Maher had higher than a 2.0gpa and can speak proper english, which, according to conservative logic, makes him dumber than GWB. You see, they've turned the world on its head. When you see that, you'll be able to understand everything.

I think you see that...is that what you mean when you said it is all in perspective now? Yes, an upside down perspective. Took me forever to get that.

Maher has talent.
His show didn't suck.
He was oftentimes funny.
But he didn't exude intelligence.
Not because I often disagreed with his views. Because his "facts" were mostly rehearsed.
I don't know the guy. He may be a Rhode Scholar. But to suggest that he is intelligent simply because you agree with him is as insane as your claim to the contrary.

I like Rush Limbaugh. He's entertaining. He's Informative. But you'll not likely hear me referring to him as "smart". Why? Because his IQ need not come into play in that line of work. Not entirely at least.

These show-biz types have all their facts pre-administered before they take the stage.

Perhaps there is some middle ground here: Let's just say that Bill Maher is every bit as intelligent as Dennis Miller...

I wouldn't say that I always agree with him but I do think he's intelligent. You're right though, all of the facts that the hosts use are well rehearsed, but I think Rush and Maher are both good at going beyond the rehearsal.

I liked PI, so I'll watch his new show tonight and see if my opinion changes...

th rason we don't see much of dennis miller is because he was too full of himself. early on he was funny, but his references were all inside references that he assumed only he knew. what was monday night football thinking.

i think monday night football is perfect now, it's football, it does not need comedy relief.

Don't have to agree with any of them to see that Maher, Limbaugh, and Miller are not dummies.
