I've read the "first cigars" thread but what I want to know is how and why you guys and gals started smoking cigars. For me, it was the experience of watching an older fella enjoy one. There's a neighborhood coffee house(not Starbucks, arghh!) that I like to get my morning pick-me-up at. After getting my cup of joe and the newspaper, I sit outside of the cafe. Whilst enjoying the fine San Diego weather and contemplating life this older gentlemen sits down a few tables away, takes out his stogie, and proceeds with the ritual of lighting we're all familiar with: clipping the head, toasting the foot, and the first few light-up puffs. Anyways, through the long draws and clouds of smoke I'm thinking that this guy has got his act together. There's a certain aura, hard to explain, like all was good for the time being. That moment made quite an impact cause I went to the bookstore next door and got a few reading materials, "Idiots Guide to Cigars," "Smoke," and "CA." To end my story, I never knew the guy, didn't know what cigar he was enjoying, or what his thoughts were, it didn't matter. The outcome of the story is that I now experience my own cigar moments where others wonder. OK, I'm done sharing -K

Well, for me, it was when I was 18 (about 4 years ago)and I was in Hawaii. I have always wanted to smoke a cigar for the look and glamour. It was my high school graduation trip and I thought smoking a cigar would be perfect for the celebration. I tried one of those macadamian nut and chocolate flavored ones and I LOVED it! The look, the feel, and taste of tobacco excited me. So later, I started to buy cohiba's, macs, and padrons to experiment and started to love them and turn away from the flavored ones.

I live in San Diego now in Sorrento Valley and I smoke 1 or 2 a day after work or school to relax. If you guys are in San Diego, I'm the young Korean kid sitting outside at the Mira Mesa Starbucks next to I-15 (between jamba juice and coldstone) in the Albertsons plaza smoking a cigar. I'm there 5-7 days a week at odd times.

It's long been my contention that each of us is influenced in our life's choices by an older person other than our parents ... kaikai1102 mentions being influenced by "an older gentleman" sitting near him, then clipping and lighting a cigar ... it strikes me that had his story been set in San Francisco instead of San Diego, I might well have been the "older gentleman" ... assuming, of course, that anyone is charitable enough to think of me as a gentleman ... it makes me wonder whether I might be influencing someone in my own daily routine ... deep thoughts indeed.

Smoked my first cigar as a teenaged kid just about to start my junior year in HS ... a group of us somehow got hold of some beer and cigars and went to a public park to live large for an afternoon ... taking a bite of forbidden fruit, you might say ... what a costly afternoon THAT turned out to be ... we got caught by the coach of the wrestling team ... those of us who had been on the wrestling team were summarily dismissed, having violated two of his most sacred rules ... plus, I learned that day that I had a taste for both drink and cigars and couldn't BEGIN to count the $$$ spent in the years since on those two pleasures of life ...

When I think about it, that's why I smoke cigars now ... I find a good cigar to be one of the true pleasures of life ... most of you agree with me, but thankfully, not everyone does ... bidding here is stiff enough with the percentage of the population who do ...

Business led me to cigars, as it does for many. I worked for a Canadian company about 10 years ago, and they all enjoyed cigars after dinner. They had the right idea on the wine and pasta, so I followed their lead on cigars and instantly enjoyed it. Cigars are a regular part of my life now, business notwithstanding. But cigars are still a big part of my business life. We use doing business as an excuse to get away and smoke a nice cigar; we use our passion for nice cigars as an excuse to get together and talk business. We have a humidor in a couple of offices, smoke short ones at lunch when the weather's nice, make trips to walk-in humidors at lunch when the weather's bad. A good cigar is always my desert when my wife and I go out to dinner. So in my case, some older business execs who, at least to me, seemed to have this "good life" thing figured out were my influence.

For me it was my father that influenced me. As far back as I can remember he smoked a pipe and I fell in love with the aroma. I "borrowed" one of his pipes when I graduated high school and tried different tobaccos until I settled on a slight vanilla tobacco. There was just a hint of vanilla to it and a nice bite of tobacco. I took up swisher sweets to chase away mosquitos while fishing, though pipe smoking was still my forte. I graduated to nicer smokes one day while shopping for some pipe tobacco. I finally noticed their walk in humidor and once I took that first step in that was all she wrote. I have some favorites, but always like trying new smokes. I really enjoy sitting on my backporch smoking a nice cigar, watching my dogs play, and reading a book, the paper, or just taking in all that nature has to offer.

Like a lot of people I was an on and off cigarette smoker for years. During that peroid the only cigars I knew about were the junky ones like Swishers and El Productos and I didn't like them. One day I saw a cigar store and on went in on a whim. Bought a cigar at random because they all looked alike to me. And the rest is history. At least I got over cigarettes.
