Just found this at socalherf.com

What is a HERF and where did it originate?
The first recorded use of the word "herf" was by Prince of Skeeves on 11/21/1996. The way it was used it seemed to mean "smoke" or "inhale" or possibly even "enjoy".
The word got some clarrification by Prince of Skeeves on 7/11/1997. There he stated that "herf" meant, "the method for getting a good mouthful of tasty smoke from my favorite cigars"

Over time it became "Let's get together and herf." "I went to a herf and met Joe." and of course The Southern California Herfing Society. :-) ASC, where a nebie's third post can create a word/term that long outlasts his posting history on the newsgroup.

It's an acronym: Holes Enjoying Rare Fuentes. This is cleaned up. The original term was AHERF.
