I got a box of 14 of the #7 madies, in a word? One of the best cigars I've smoked. The naturals are (I think) significantly milder... Perhaps like an expensive Maccanudo? Others may feel differently. I've had the naturals b4 and they didn't leave me wanting more. The maduro however... Cambells smoke... Mmmm Mmmm Good.

In 1991 Stanford Newman first discussed his idea about making a Super Premium cigar, the DIAMOND CROWN, with Carlos Fuente Sr.

In celebration of his J.C. Newman Cigar Company's upcoming 100th Anniversary, Stanford wanted to develop a truly exceptional series of cigars - unlike any other on the market.

He didn't care what it would cost, how much time it took, or even whether or not it would sell. Stanford Newman was in his mid 70's and his company was approaching it's 100th Anniversity .Creating the smoothest, most flavorful, full bodied cigar possible was just something Stanford Newman wanted to do as a culmination to his 50 plus years in the cigar business.

One of the factors that makes the taste of DIAMOND CROWN cigars so special is its exclusive CFW (Connecticut Fermented Wrapper ).

Unlike most other quality tobacco wrappers that are normally hung in barns, dried, and bulked for a single fermentation prior to being packed in bales and eventually rolled into a cigar,DIAMOND CROWN'S CFW wrapper goes through a second fermentation.

Specially fermented five year old wrapper leaves are unpacked from the bale and then conditioned and graded. The silkiest, smoothest leaves are then selected and placed in bulks for a second fermentation It is this "second curing " that evens and develops the rosado color of the tobacco wrapper and this "second curing", also accounts for much of DIAMOND CROWN"S Sweet, smooth, rich flavor.

The Blend on this is a VERY Close Cousin or even half brother to the Opus X - in fact - West of the Mississippi, you will find that the Diamond Crown is viewed, marketed and sold in much the same way as the Opus X is done here East of the Mississippi.

This cigar and a fine brandy or port - very few things get a higher rating for truly indulging yoursel as far as smoking cigars goes.

Thank for the info. I did not know that. Kind of neat to know your sticks history. Makes them nicer to own I think.

I may be mistaken, but I don't think there is a 'maduro' Diamond Crown ...

... if I'm wrong, please correct me (i'd like to try and find some)!

Slim,
Yes there is a maduro Diamond Crown. It's not as readily available as the regular line, but it exists. I've not tried one as I've always thought the regular line is just too mild. I'll now look for the maduro myself. Without a doubt, the DC is the best Connecticut Shade wrapped cigar today.

WOO WHO! I got a box of 14 here on CBID for 124. I saw a box go the other day for 145. That's pricy, but it's 14 sticks. And they retail for like 20 bux a piece... They are EXCELLENT! Not worth 20 bux, but then again what is. I think Ropeman got one in a trade. We'll see his post when he smokes it.

I've got some Hugo Cassar Diamond selection perfectos. Five year aging, kind of nutty tasting. Do they count?

The Diamond Crown is an excellent cigar, but is often only available at MSRP and above. The double fermentation is important, but the blend, craftsmanship and marketing play a huge part in the price structure. Some years ago, Fuente produced another cigar, simply called Premium Dominicana, that also had a wrapper that was fermented twice. The only identification that this was a Fuente product was on the outside bottom of the box. The cigar bombed at regular price and was closed out in many locations at less than $50.00 a box. If you can find them, I suggest Flor de Ybor City #85 with an Ecuadorian sun grown natural wrapper. They are Fuente mades and quite reasonable in price.
