Queasy Stomach ??

Have you ever smoked a cigar that makes your stomach a little queasy?? It kinda starts in your chest and moves into your stomach ...

I smoked a "new" cigar last night that did this... The cigar itself was perfectly made, burned great and produced a lot of smoke. The taste was spicy and pretty good. I ate dinner at 6:30 and smoked this at about 9:00pm, so my stomach was not empty..

What causes that?? A very full bodied cigar? Tobacco from a certain area??

Anyone else experience this?? Anyone know why it happens??

Low

Is this a question for the "Lord Slim Says" board?? LOL

I liken that to what happens if you don't spit while chewing tobacco. It used to happen to me, but I got used to it. If I'm smoking something really strong, I still get the queesiness. I guess you and I need to smoke more often to get used to it!

Yes this has happened to me on a number of occasions. I once smoked a candela that actually made me hurl.

I just figured it was because I don't smoke cigars often. But it doesn't happen all the time so maybe its a combination of the cigar and what I ate and drank.

Riiiiight xibbumbero, the cigar did it.... not the tequila ;) LOL Well I for one can say that cigars give me that same feeling sometimes. I thought I was alonse. It is not everytime, but sometimes it does do that. Sometimes it just stays in my chest and then goes away. I am also wondering what causes it.

Had it been a lemon flavored cigar or had it had salty undertones you probably would have been just fine.

Interesting. I typed in the brand of candela that I smoked in my original post but it has disappeared...gone up in smoke you might say.

I was going to post a similar query titled "Olivia O-my god." I had my first one of these babies after a full day of completing a long honey-do yardwork list. With only a bagel and 3 cups of java in my tummy I sat down on the patio about 6pm before dinner, pulled this baby out of the humi and grabbed a frosty malt beverage. I was probably pretty dehydrated and by the time I finished the cigar and beer I was loopy. Felt just like a 14-yr old taking his first dip of Copenhagen. I was sick to my stomach and my head was spinning. I had to lie down. Fortunately, it passed after about 20min and I avoided booting all over the place (I'd like to leave that activity to the pregnant wife). Unfortunately, I'm now hesitant to have any more of this stick that has received rave reviews here (I only had one from a sun-grown sampler so I won't have a bunch to trade). I guess that is what they mean when you hear "smoke this one after a big meal in the evening."

Ahh....i think we can all remember the first cigar that got us there....i think it has to do with jumping to a more fuller-bodied cigar...

For me it was the Partagas Black Label...great cigar, but it takes a while to get used to...first one i smoked i only got down 2 inches before i started feeling light-headed/queasy...now i am glad to say, i dont have that problem...at least not with that cigar...

Hey Low, I just realized you didn't identify the culprit that sent you for a loop. What was the "new" cigar?

Petrus Fortus Anejo 1...

Didn't want to create a stir on boards... might want to buy more at a good price... Oh, well...

Besides making me queasy, this was a good cigar, IMO... as stated above, one of the most perfect burns and ash I had in a while... tons of smoke...

Lowman --- that has happened to me a couple of times, usually when I smoked a full bodied cigar with lot's of Ligero leaves ...

... do you ocassionaly inhale the smoke? Years ago, I smoked Camel 'non-filters' ... so I sometimes find myself inhaling without being aware of it.

Cigars have a considerable amount of nicotine in them, some reports I've read claim that one full bodied cigar can have as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes ... but reports can be pretty one-sided, depending on who is doing the study.

I attributed my experiences to a mild case of nicotine poisoning (or overdose) ... as I actually felt myself losing color (turning green), I got weak in the knees, and the world started spinning, and I came very close to hurling. It lasted for almost an hour, before I felt better ... and that was after drinking a large glass of cold water and lying down until it went away.

hey, Hey, HEY... Let's not get politics mixed in with my queasy stomach... Don't want to make it worse!!!

Thanks for the info...

This has happened before but don't recall what I was smoking then. Maybe it is the fuller smokes. But I usually do smoke med to full bodied?? Maybe this was full to fuller??

Lowman, your queasiness is simply you're body's reaction to self-induced poisoning....Enjoy.

It was the wind direction that day, blowing from Secaucus...the cigar had nothing to do with it.

I get it on an empty stomach with what would be considered a "powerhouse" stick. I've learned to appreciate the odd sensation as part of the "buzz" of a good cigar. Picking up on what Slim said, I think sometimes you "swallow" some smoke, along with inhaling some, even if you're not trying to. It's worse for me if I don't take my Prilosec.

Nicotie poising is part of the problem. If you get the cigar too wet it traps more nicotine and you end up swallowing in. Another problem could be an inmature cigar. During fermentation, the leaves give off a lot of ammmonia smelling vapors, this is why you may see the drying sheds very open air. If the leaves are not completely aged they retain some of that ammonia, and when you burn the leaf it gives it off and you can inhale the tainted smoke. You may not be able to smell it, but there may be enough there to make you sick.

Tried one of the formidable (if not forbidding) Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970s for the first time this past weekend, and got a long-lasting buzz followed by a bit of queasiness for a while. I still get this feeling now and again, even though I smoke cigars every day. Part of the susceptibility to this nicotine overdose has to do with the absorption of nicotine directly through the mucous membrane in the mouth. While cigarette tobacco apparently doesn't absorb readily through the mucous membranes, the tobacco in cigars does, due, I believe, to the catalytic action of ammonia in the tobacco leaves. The upshot is that you don't even need to accidentally swallow cigar smoke to get nicotine overdose--it absorbs directly into your system from your mouth. The moral being that if you're gonna play with fire, expect to get a buzz and upset stomach from time to time.

And I thought I was the only one.
I tend to get that queasy feeling almost every time I smoke. Also, I usually break out in hives. But that's nothing compared to the massive headache I get and the inability to control my bowel movements after a good cigar. Which wouldn't be so bad if my narcolepsy didn't act up each time I smoked, preventing me from even attempting to make it to the toilet.

It's great to know that you guys understand.

My first real cigar did it to me. It was an ISOM Monte #4. It's a little bugger, but I had no experience, and the only thing in my belly was two cups of homebrewed espresso. By the time I realized what was happening, I knew it was way too late. It was darn near a psychedelic experience. My hands were buzzing, and I had too lay in the grass, alternately curled up and splayed out. My stomache was grumbling the rest of the day. Needless to say I fell in love with cigars at the start. Now it happens only mildly and rarely.
...It starts like a rollercoaster ride, so real it takes your breath away, it slides you through your point of view, you look back to where you thought you'd stay...

Sorry boys, never happened to me...

But I directly attribute it to the fact that I usually have a Jack & Coke or a good single malt to wash away any bad feelings in da belly, or the head for that matter. ;-)

Hey Lowman, email sent!

Had this feeling before- many times- grew up barning tobacco and would get very sick when working in the fields when the dew was still on the leaves. The wettness allows the nicotine to absorb through the skin. I would get violently ill every morning. To solve this I began dipping snuff- I quit getting sick. The nicotine was always in my system. Quit snuff 15 years later and began smoking cigars. Get the queasy feelings on an empty stomach. Need something to dilute the traces of tobacco juice that you swallow when smoking cigars.

Well, if it was a less than premium cigar, or one made during the "Boom Years" it could be that the tobacco filler and/or binder was not fermented(sweated) long enough. Underfermented tobacco will cause a burning/irritation in the chest area. You can get more info on that at www. coffinails dot com. It's a site for those of us that grow our own tobacco.

Funny you should ask. For the first time in many many years it happened to me, a little.

Saturday I had a Rastafari, Indian Tabac Teepee,a Diesel Corrosion or Hi-Octane, CI Corojo Church., Don Tomas Fat Toro Corojo and finished the night off with 2 Cuban Parejo Epicures. In that order. (plus 6oz. of Bacardi 151)

I don't think the latter had anything to do with it, but when I stood up to make a head call, I was listing to the port side and the room was taking heavy rolls.

I've smoked gars for over 30 years. I got queasy once in the beginning with a Candela. Remember, the only green things ok to put in your mouth are veggies and if you're a kid, boogers.

I've got so much nicotene in my body, when I sweat, I smell like a wet ashtray.

I'm 6'4", 315. I'm glad I don't get sick and fall down. No one would risk picking me up!

One more thing. The secret to drinking a lot of 151 is to lie down on the floor first. You won't get hurt when you pass out. Also be cautious, it's highly flammable.

Hope this helped in some cosmic way.

Sounds like a slight case of nicotine poisoning.

Check here for he dire description:

http://www.oklahomapoison.org/prevention/nicotine.asp

I get this when smoking while doing something strenuous like panting trees or other yard work.

Try chewing gum while smoking, for me it seems to absorb some of the nicotine and helps with ‘cigar breath’ after a nice smoke. Also make sure you are drinking enough water.

IMHO, albeit chewing gum while enjoying a cigar may some purists to cringe, I enjoy it more than coffee or a refreshing brewed beverage with a cigar.
