Cutting Cigars

I have been laid up with a pinched nerve in my lower back. I had not had a cigar in a few days and I was twitching. I will usually go to my club and smoke but I haven't been able to do that with by back. So yesterday I limped into my garage with a CAO Lancero. I didn't have time to smoke the whole cigar so I cut it in half and only smoked half. The mini lancero tasted great and I smoked it to the nub. No it didn't unwrap. My question is did I break any unwritten rules? Does anyone else cut cigars and smoke half? If I had a smaller cigar I would have smoked it but my humidor is full of large ring gauge cigars. Any thoughts on a quick cigar..... Thanks for your input..

I'm sorry, but that sort of behaviour cannot be tolerated, even under your obviously painful circumstances. You are banned from the C-Bd fori for life. We all have to abide by the rules here.

... occasionally, with a Churchill (or any longer cigar), if I don't have the time to smoke the whole thing.

But, will never cut 'top-shelf' cigar in half, just the lower end yard sticks ... as it can affect the flavor profle it was intended to produce.

You might want to try one of those cigar savor tubes. That might be a better solution for you.

I cut a Partagas 150 A in half one time and made two robustos. They were both very nice.

I just bought one of those cigar savor tubes and I will tell you how it works out, I don't have time to smoke an entire cigar sometimes, which i think is a crime, but I wanted to try one of thesse and got it for a great price. I will report on it as soon as I get it.

I've done this with several of the longer Dos Rios, which have without exception had an impossible draw. I found that this offered me two very pleasant smokes, both with a good draw. However, I'd choose my exceptions for this unorthodox practice carefully, and would never do it on a really great smoke. After all, if Churchhills were meant to be short, they would've made them robustos.

Some folks it seems have a tendency to look for every opportunity they find to try out their comedic skills ... and it can be distracting when sincere advise is wanted. There is always room for levity, but when genuine advise is sought, it should be given ...

A good forum will have a balance of both, without one overpowering the other ...

Many times I find myself trying to weed through the fluff to get the correct info I am seeking. We can all have fun, but we must take into consideration that many folks do come to this site (as well as many other sites on the net) to get solid information. The forums at CB have earned that stellar reputation over the years ...

... just my 2¢

Did I read this correctly? I mean, did you say you cut a CAO in half? I just have to clarify because I can't believe my friggin eyes! What the F were you thinking? I don't care how long your sorry butt is laid up, If you need a smoke that bad, light up a (full size) Bad Frog or something and then you don't have to feel guilty by putting it out after a minute or so. That's to say if you don't extinguish it purely from the nasty taste. But, for the love of Christ, NEVER cut a CAO in half or anything else for that matter again. If I ever hear that you did such a sacreligious act such as that again, I'm coming for you!

Just kidding...lmao

Sorry Slim,

It was only in jest, I would never cut cigar in half for reasons givin in this post and good advice in other post. Also, may be reason they make different size cigars, I would smoke a churchill outside on a 15 minute break.

Again, no harm meant, I realize the post was sincere, but youv'e got to admit, there was a small bit of humor embedded in the post.

Right, balance, for instance, I posted twice, First saying that I have cut large cigars (a Partagas A) YES! That was not a joke! and secondly implying a flatulant event. But PLEASE! Don't consider holding back! It is so enjoyable to read the banter back and fourth and see how funny some of the folks are. One or two serious posts will get in, if they don't, go ahead and put one in.

I've cut many a cigar in half when I had a big cigar and didn't want a long smoke. Especially if it's an expensive cigar, you get two smokes for the price of one. I don't believe it messes up the flavor, sometimes they smoke better.

I usually tie the end that wants to unravel with a bit of dental floss -- before I make the cut. Works great.

It seems to me that some people here, when their humor is injected into the mix is acceptable but at other times, perhaps when they're not in a humorous mood,it is frowned upon. A cigar board is designed to accomodate both. Too much of one or the other can be distracting. However I've yet to see it here,JMO. X

Robby --- In your yearbook, did you have 'Class Clown' next to your picture? ;^)

Do you see what I mean? I took your Partagas 150 statement as a joke, because with you, it's like the 'boy who cried wolf' ... A lot of people here never know if you are serious or not, and it affects your credibility. With you ... no offense, I honestly don't know what to beleive sometimes.

CulleyJC52, and everyone else (even Robby) ... my statement was NOT directed at any one specific. I've been saying this here for the last three years ... and I still stand by my convictions. This site has always had a certain class about it, and has always been a solid source for good cigar information ... and it has always been a fun place to participate in. But, I'd surely hate to see it become a site where folks just drop by to, "see how funny some of the folks are ..."

Humor is always good ... and a little can go a long way. What bugs me, is when the banter ruins a good thread, and there are threads that a little more restraint is appropriate.

Some threads are made for humor, we've seen lot's of them ... and they can be pretty hilarious. The key is when to know the difference, and when too much is just too much ...

I'm spouting nothing new, like I said ... the old timers here have heard this rant many times before, and can now proceed to get on me about my redundancy ... LOL!

As a last note, I wonder what John Wayne Bobbit would say about cuttting his cigar in two parts.

Sorry couldn't resist Slim, please don't beat me.

But, also out of due respect. Some of these post are so far reaching. Here the man that cut a cigar in two parts, cause he didn't have time to smoke the whole thing. In his own words, said everything was fine, the cigar didn't even unravel, and it tasted great. But, then felt the need do a post, to see if he violated some unknown cigar law??????????? Oh please.

I've cut a cigar in two a few times, when it was burning so unevenly, to start smoking it all over again. But, didn't feel the need to rush to my computer to post my unconventional act, to make sure I didn't commit a unknown cigar smokers sin.

I am thankful, newbies, including myself have learned a lot from you veterans. Even when the question may be something like, wrapper on/wrapper off, which has been beaten to hell. But, you vets are patient and go over the opinions again, as though the question was never asked before, which I think is great. But, if you read this post , most will agree this was silly to begin with, which brought on the innocent jest.

WOW.. I didn’t know I would cause such a controversy. First off yes there was some humor in my post.
My question is, "did I break any unwritten rules?” I wasn’t asking for permission to smoke half a cigar. I was curious if anyone else did this on a regular basis. As far as cutting CAOs I ended up smoking two fine Lancero halves. “Any thought on a quick cigar.” I was looking for input on a smaller brand cigar. I am new to these boards and I have learned an awful lot browsing and remaining in the background. I think we have to continue to use humor as well as sharing information. Let’s all try to get along and have fun…

Smoke em if yer gut em. If you don’t only smoke half.

John

Stickbow --- of course we must, "continue to use humor as well as sharing information" ... it's the 'let's make a funny comment' at everything that someone posts that gets to me ...

... but that's just me. Take it with a grian of salt!

I've been to many gatherings where the adults are having conversation, and there is aways the one kid that keeps popping-off in order to get attention ... it's cool, but can get annoying.

Some folks just feel the need to over do it ... I guess.

There is a widely perceived notion that a cigar blend changes as it travels from foot to cap and that if you cut a cigar in half, you disrupt the blender's intent.

If you get the opportunity to discuss this notion with folks who have been on the rolling floor, they just laugh. Each roller is given a pile of tobacco from which to form the "bunch" before it goes into a mold. (Yes, hand rolleds go into molds.) They work fast, if they want to keep their jobs, and don't ponder, cigar to cigar, "let's see, did I position the ligero properly in this one..."

No two cigars, unless they are machine made of homogenized fill, will ever smoke and taste exactly alike.

If you cut a long cigar in half, the two halves may smoke identically or may be slightly different. There can be a problem of the wrapper unraveling where it has been cut at the middle of the cigar.

Robby --- don't get me wrong.

Your 'sideways' humor is very clever. I just find it a bit expected and repetitious at times ... and it loses some of it's spontaneity. It bothers me a little that I find myself skipping over your posts, because I suspect that they are just 'one-liners' designed to get a laugh. It bugs me, because I know you are intelligent and have a lot to offer ...

Heck ... eveyrone who has been here awhile, knows that I had the same issues with E-Chick ... and that went on for years. We had some pretty intense battles over it also ... and after several private emails, we finally resolved our differences.

... notice how she has gotten a lot better? She still throws out the occasional innuendo and one-liners ... but she has refined her style, and they are now poignant ... and are fun to read!

Right now ... your posts are very much the 'male counterpart' of the the early E-Chick. And heck ... I gave her so much crap over the years, I only felt that in fair play, I give you a little ... ;^) I'm just glad that I've mellowed out a bit over the years ... or maybe I should say that E-Chick wore me out!

And after all ... I wouldn't want her to think that I was sexist! That could start a whole new round with her ... LOL!

I'll try, but did you read my post on the scorpion and the frog on the misc board? The scorpion stung the frog while the frog was carrying him across the river, the frog says why did you do that? Now we'll both drown? And the scorpion says, "I can't help it, it's just my nature".

I actually showed up late for sexual harassment training at work and said to the teacher, “I apologize for being late, but I didn’t want to come prematurely”. I really can’t help myself. But, I’ll try... Hey! Did you hear the one about the nun and the Rabi? DOH!!

This post isn't finnished yet. I still think questions are yet to be answered. Like nobody replied to my what would John Wayne Bobbit do question, maybe we'll never know.

Anyway, enjoyed your post and look forward to your next one.
